These are the tales the people tell about themselves, their communities, and the world they inhabit. øOur Voices showcases twenty storytellers and writers who represent a full range of Athabaskan and related languages of Alaska and the Yukon. Both men and women recount popular tales of ancient times that describe the origins of social institutions and cultural values, as well as meaningful, sometimes intimate stories about their own lives and families or the history of their people. Book Some Dance to Remember A Memoir Novel of San Francisco 1970 1982

Download or read book Some Dance to Remember A Memoir Novel of San Francisco 1970 1982 written by Jack Fritscher and published by Palm Drive Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some Dance to Remember has been reviewed as ¿the gay Gone with the Wind.¿ But such popular praise does not do literary justice to this eyewitness classic of that ¿first golden decade after Stonewall.¿ This best-selling epic of San Francisco¿s Castro seethes with sex, drugs, panic, and passionate characters: a gay writer, a drop-dead gorgeous bodybuilder, a cabaret singer, a Vietnam vet, a Hollywood bitch, and a rough-trade porn mogul. Narrator Magnus Bishop channels Ryan O¿Hara, a writer pioneering a tell-all voice in the emerging subculture of gay magazines. When Ryan meets Quentin Crisp¿s ¿perfect man¿ in Kick Sorenson, lust and politics collide. Steroids rule Castro Street. Gender fascism divides queens versus clones into gay civil war over correct queer identity. White assassinates Milk. Gay rioters burn City Hall. Ryan, romancing the morphing trickster Kick, cruises through nightclubs, ecstatic sex, and leather rituals in legendary bathhouses. Sprung from Isherwood¿s Cabaret, 1970s San Francisco mirrored 1930s Berlin: decadent, dazzling, diverse, doomed. It¿s all here. A city. A murder. A plague. A lost civilization. A love story. Some Dance to Remember is dedicated to Jack Fritscher¿s 1970s bicoastal lover, Robert Mapplethorpe.¿My God, what a book! It¿s all there, done with Fritscher¿s usual élan and verve. I wouldn¿t be surprised if he has written what will be looked on as that period¿s Great American Gay Novel. What lovely stuff! ¿Sam Steward (Phil Andros)¿Jack Fritscher didn¿t invent the Castro. He just made it mythical. HEADY, EROTIC, COMIC....A comprehensive fictional chronicle of the best of times....If one can learn American history via the novels of Gore Vidal, one can learn gay American history through Some Dance.¿ ¿ The Advocate, David Perry¿Cinematic intensity....A brilliant record of gay life before AIDS....An astonishing spectrum of queer lives....This sprawling saga...has not lost a whit of its muscular passion, punchy immediacy, or transformative literary impact.¿ ¿ Books to Watch Out For, Richard Labonté¿STAGGERINGLY ORIGINAL and completely absorbing....Here is San Francisco¿s gay male scene in the 1970s and ¿80s as never told, or documented, before.¿ ¿ Michael Bronski, Author of Culture Clash: The Making of Gay Sensibility

Book SQL Success

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stéphane Faroult
  • Publisher : RoughSea Ltd
  • Release : 2013-09-18
  • ISBN : 1909765015
  • Pages : 744 pages

Download or read book SQL Success written by Stéphane Faroult and published by RoughSea Ltd. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "SQL Success" is about problem-solving in SQL. It bridges the gap between dry and dull database theory books, and developer books that focus on giving recipes without explaining sufficiently the reasons behind the recipes or discussing alternative solutions. Many developers struggle with SQL due to the contrast between the top-down logic of most programming languages and SQL's set-based approach. "SQL Success" aims to be different. This book is more than syntax examples. "SQL Success" explains how to use SQL to solve problems, and covers syntax in the process-not as the focus, but as a tool toward accomplishing the objective. "SQL Success" also shows something that most other books do not: the pitfalls and traps of SQL, a deceptively simple language, and how easy it is to get a query wrong. Written in a conversational way, "SQL Success" talks about logic more than theory, avoids jargon, and refers to common-sense more than rules. It ignores features that are rarely used and tries to avoid information overload. The intention of "SQL Success" is not to cover every aspect of all variants of SQL. The goal is to cover everything that is of practical use. That goal is informed by the author's many years of practical experience leading an understanding of what professional developers need to know, the common mistakes that are made, and how those mistakes can be avoided. * Focuses on the practical implications of theory. * Emphasizes accuracy and efficiency. * Teaches how to "think SQL", not merely the syntax. * Applies to Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, DB2, and SQLite. * Suitable for college-level database courses, SQL certification preparation, and professionals who want to take their database skills to the next level. * Bolstered by downloadable files and online database with practice exercises at edu.konagora.com. * Includes resources for instructors.

Book Why

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles Tilly
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2012-08-23
  • ISBN : 1400837782
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Why written by Charles Tilly and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why? is a book about the explanations we give and how we give them--a fascinating look at the way the reasons we offer every day are dictated by, and help constitute, social relationships. Written in an easy-to-read style by distinguished social historian Charles Tilly, the book explores the manner in which people claim, establish, negotiate, repair, rework, or terminate relations with others through the reasons they give. Tilly examines a number of different types of reason giving. For example, he shows how an air traffic controller would explain the near miss of two aircraft in several different ways, depending upon the intended audience: for an acquaintance at a cocktail party, he might shrug it off by saying "This happens all the time," or offer a chatty, colloquial rendition of what transpired; for a colleague at work, he would venture a longer, more technical explanation, and for a formal report for his division head he would provide an exhaustive, detailed account. Tilly demonstrates that reasons fall into four different categories: Convention: "I'm sorry I spilled my coffee; I'm such a klutz." Narratives: "My friend betrayed me because she was jealous of my sister." Technical cause-effect accounts: "A short circuit in the ignition system caused the engine rotors to fail." Codes or workplace jargon: "We can't turn over the records. We're bound by statute 369." Tilly illustrates his topic by showing how a variety of people gave reasons for the 9/11 attacks. He also demonstrates how those who work with one sort of reason frequently convert it into another sort. For example, a doctor might understand an illness using the technical language of biochemistry, but explain it to his patient, who knows nothing of biochemistry, by using conventions and stories. Replete with sparkling anecdotes about everyday social experiences (including the author's own), Why? makes the case for stories as one of the great human inventions.
