Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature of all time. Millions of people have tried to read and understand it, but very few have succeeded. Actually, Cervantes' Spanish is... weird, and not that Spanish! He uses a lot of pronouns; the syntax is absurd; there are far to many conjunctions (y/and, que/that); the sentences are too long; he keeps repeating the adjectives; he is extraordinarily verbose, which prevents the readers to understand the book. Hence, this have deceived all the translators. Besides, one needs to understand the author's purpose to produce a meaningful translation. Here, the main character is an immature middle-aged man who has decided to live in a twilight zone where his self-respect entices him to ignore reality. Sancho, who resembles Piggy in Lord of the flies, is a kind of impotent reason, an illiterate and penniless man who would like to bring his master to sanity. Unfortunately, society, which is quite immoral and insane, his lack of knowledge and his expectations do not enable him to achieve this goal. Hence, reason ends up raving. I have chosen to explain this novel, not to reproduce its style, which is awful. As for the puns, there are also closely related to the meaning of the original, although they are more idiomatic and sophisticated. Oyez, Oyez, Oyez! For the first time in four centuries, this opus is comprehensible and funny! This book is the first half (from chapter I to chapter XXXIV) of the first volume of Don Quixote.

Millions of people have tried to read and understand it, but very few have succeeded. Actually, Cervantes' Spanish is a bit Andalusian: the way he uses the pronouns and the tenses, his poor syntax, the countless conjunctions (y/and, que/that), endless sentences and a peculiar patois have deceived all the translators. Book excerpt: James Montgomery's new translation of Don Quixote is the fourth already in the twenty-first century, and it stands with the best of them. It pays particular attention to what may be the hardest aspect of Cervantes's novel to render into English: the humorous passages, particularly those that feature a comic and original use of language. Cervantes would be proud. --Howard Mancing, Professor of Spanish, Purdue University and Vice President, Cervantes Society of America

Book excerpt: Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read Don Quixote has become so entranced reading tales of chivalry that he decides to turn knight errant himself. In the company of his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, these exploits blossom in all sorts of wonderful ways. While Quixote's fancy often leads him astray—he tilts at windmills, imagining them to be giants—Sancho acquires cunning and a certain sagacity. Sane madman and wise fool, they roam the world together-and together they have haunted readers' imaginations for nearly four hundred years. With its experimental form and literary playfulness, Don Quixote has been generally recognized as the first modern novel. This Penguin Classics edition, with its beautiful new cover design, includes John Rutherford's masterly translation, which does full justice to the energy and wit of Cervantes's prose, as well as a brilliant critical introduction by Roberto Gonzalez Echevarriá.

Book excerpt: "The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. A founding work of Western literature, it is often labeled ""the first modern novel and is sometimes considered the best literary work ever written. The plot revolves around the adventures of a noble from La Mancha named Alonso Quixano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight errant (caballero andante) to revive chivalry and serve his nation, under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical monologues on knighthood, already considered old-fashioned at the time. Don Quixote, in the first part of the book, does not see the world for what it is and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story."

Book excerpt: "Diana de Armas Wilson's introductory study captures the true essence of why Cervantes's novel has become a valuable piece of our shared cultural heritage. Humour, satire, and the religious and political conflicts that plagued the era all form part of Cervantes's great vision, and Wilson's study provides thorough analysis of why we still want to read the adventures of his would-be knight errant and his loyal squire over four centuries later." --AARON KAHN, University of Sussex

Their picaresque adventures in the world of seventeenth-century Spain form the basis of one of the great treasures of Western literature. In a new translation that “comes closest, among the modern translations, to the simple, intimate, direct style that characterizes Cervantes’ narrative,”* Don Quixote is a novel that is both immortal satire of an outdated chivalric code and a biting portrayal of an age in which nobility was a form of madness. *John J. Allen, Professor Emeritus of Spanish, University of Kentucky and Past President of the Cervantes Society of America
