Book Domination and the Arts of Resistance

Download or read book Domination and the Arts of Resistance written by James C. Scott and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Play fool, to catch wise."--proverb of Jamaican slaves Confrontations between the powerless and powerful are laden with deception--the powerless feign deference and the powerful subtly assert their mastery. Peasants, serfs, untouchables, slaves, laborers, and prisoners are not free to speak their minds in the presence of power. These subordinate groups instead create a secret discourse that represents a critique of power spoken behind the backs of the dominant. At the same time, the powerful also develop a private dialogue about practices and goals of their rule that cannot be openly avowed. In this book, renowned social scientist James C. Scott offers a penetrating discussion both of the public roles played by the powerful and powerless and the mocking, vengeful tone they display off stage--what he terms their public and hidden transcripts. Using examples from the literature, history, and politics of cultures around the world, Scott examines the many guises this interaction has taken throughout history and the tensions and contradictions it reflects. Scott describes the ideological resistance of subordinate groups--their gossip, folktales, songs, jokes, and theater--their use of anonymity and ambiguity. He also analyzes how ruling elites attempt to convey an impression of hegemony through such devices as parades, state ceremony, and rituals of subordination and apology. Finally, he identifies--with quotations that range from the recollections of American slaves to those of Russian citizens during the beginnings of Gorbachev's glasnost campaign--the political electricity generated among oppressed groups when, for the first time, the hidden transcript is spoken directly and publicly in the face of power. His landmark work will revise our understanding of subordination, resistance, hegemony, folk culture, and the ideas behind revolt.

Download or read book How to Dominate a Woman in Bed written by Lionel Maximilien and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget about everything you've ever read or heard that says you have to be the alpha male. Forget about those movies where the guy always gets the girl his way. And most certainly, get rid of the notion of a woman being a conquest that you are out to discover. There is far more to the secrets of learning how to dominate a woman in bed. Let me tell you right away that if you think you are going to learn how to dominate a woman out of a book you are fooled. Do women want to be dominated in bed? Women today are smart, confident, bold, aggressive just like men. This doesn't mean that they still don't want to be dominated in the bedroom. They DO. And they expect you to know how to dominate them "right". This book will teach you what "right" mean. You will get an insight into some of the mysterious ways that combine seduction, examples and tips on domination, and a reminder of what it means to be a man in the bedroom. It's elusive and tricky, to say the least, and when you get there, you will know it. There is a little bit of psychology (okay a lot) that you will have to understand.

There are those who answer that call in a more literal, thorough way. The couple has a 'pack leader'; or a dominant leader; and a submissive member. Through history to modern day, both roles have been held by both men and/or women...Oh and yes, this is a relationship where both partners are equals. Read about case illustrations, research insights, relationship help, and surprising details that may make you look at this type of long-term, committed relationship in a whole different way, no matter what gender you are! Do you identify with one of these lists of traits? Most people either do identify or know someone who does. If so, this unprecedented book is for you! S-Type Service to your partner is of great priority to you and you take it very seriously. Decisiveness, direction, and guidance from your partner makes you feel secure and loved. You appreciate the freedom that comes from structure, surrender, and personal discipline. L-Type You have natural dominant traits and seem comfortable and confident when using them. You place an importance on follow-through and follow-up from your partner. You step into your natural abilities to lead, guide, protect and direct. Book Stated Choice Methods

Download or read book Stated Choice Methods written by Jordan J. Louviere and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-09-28 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding and predicting the behaviour of decision makers when choosing among discrete goods has been one of the most fruitful areas of applied research over the last thirty years. An understanding of individual consumer behaviour can lead to significant changes in product or service design, pricing strategy, distribution channel and communication strategy selection, as well as public welfare analysis. This graduate and practitioner guide, first published in 2000, deals with the study and prediction of consumer choice behaviour, concentrating on stated preference (SP) methods - placing decision makers in controlled experiments that yield hypothetical choices - rather than revealed preferences (RP) - actual choices in the market. It shows how SP methods can be implemented, from experimental design to econometric modelling, and suggests how to combine RP and SP data to get the best from each type. The book also presents an update of econometric approaches to choice modelling.

Book Lacan s Clinical Technique

Download or read book Lacan s Clinical Technique written by Antonio Quinet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do psychoanalysts act during analysis? When does treatment start? How long does a session or treatment last? How much does it cost? What does analytical interpretation entail? What is the final aim of analysis? These are the main issues Antonio Quinet addresses for clinical psychoanalysts and students in training. This is not a do-it-yourself book or a step-by-step manual, but rather an examination of Freudian and Lacanian techniques based on psychoanalytical theory and ethics. The ideas examined are grounded in the structure of subjectivity, and the basic assumption that analysts have taken their own analysis to the end. It is from thereon that the will have the analyst's desire as a practicla tool for their own clinical practice. Antonio Quinet's contribution regarding the start of treatment comes from his updated examination of Freudian concepts through Lacanian mathemes. This approach has made this book's first version a best seller in Brazil, with over 30,000 copies sold.

Book Racism Sexism Power and Ideology

Download or read book Racism Sexism Power and Ideology written by Colette Guillaumin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. This text argues that there is nothing obvious or natural about our ideas of sex and race and looks at the evolution of these ideas. The author contends that the slow crystallization of ideas on human races over the last few centuries can be grasped through the study of signs and their systems. However, race and sex are in no way purely abstract or symbolic phenomena. They are the hard facts of society. To be a man or woman, black or white are matters of social reality. To be a member of a particular race or sex does not bring with it the same opportunities, the same rights or the same constraints. The author examines how these constraints operate and shape our life experience. From a more theoretical standpoint, the text tackles the particular links between the daily materiality of social relationships and mental conventions. Materiality and ideology (in the sense of the perception of things) are two sides of the same coin. Relationships of sex and race follow an ancient history of physical right of the one over the other. Slavery and patriarchy are defined by direct physical rights which is not without its consequences.
