Download or read book The Devil s Church and Other Stories written by Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modem Brazilian short story begins with the mature work of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839-1908), acclaimed almost unanimously as Brazil's greatest writer. Collectively, these nineteen stories are representative of Machado's unique style and world view, and this translation doubles the number of his stories previously available in English. The stories in this volume reflect Machado's post-1880 emphasis on social satire and experimentation in psychological realism. If he had continued to produce the moralistic love stories and parlor intrigues of his earlier fiction, Machado's legacy would have been an entertaining but inconsequent body of work. However, by 1880 he had begun a devastating satirical assault on society through his fiction. In spite of his ruthlessness, Machado does at times reveal an ironic sympathy for his characters. He is not indifferent to human conflict but uses humor and irony to stress the absurdity of these conflicts, acted out against the backdrop of an indifferent universe. Such a spectacle creates a sense of helplessness that can only inspire wistful amusement. In his technical mastery of the short story. Machado was decades ahead of his contemporaries and can still be considered more modern than most of the modernists themselves. That his stories elicit such strong and diverse reactions today is a tribute to their richness, complexity, and significance.

Book excerpt: The House of Cobwebs and Other Stories is a series of political tales focusing on such topics as white-collar poverty, class differences, and social ambitions. Excerpt: "In England, during the sixties and seventies of the last century the world of books was dominated by one Gargantuan type of fiction. The terms book and novel became almost synonymous in houses that were not Puritan, yet where books and reading, in the era of few and unfree libraries, were strictly circumscribed. George Gissing was no exception to this rule. The English novel was at the summit of its reputation during his boyish days."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dasu Krishanmoorty, in his ninety fourth year, has immense faith in the power of memories to bring back days already lived for a re-evaluation, a leveling of highs and lows. Eventually, every man searches his past for clues, seeking to solve the enigma of being and the negotiation of a life not of his making. Dasu's personal tales are spun from four significant migrations that defined his life, tracing his lineage to an ancestor who was also a migrant. He takes the reader to places with different histories, geographies, and cultures. Three of these locations, once ruled by Muslim dynasties, are open-air museums of royal tombs and homes to awe-inspiring Islamic marvels of architecture: Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and New Delhi. In contrast, the setting of the first story in Dasu's collection, ?Cracking Infinity, ? epitomizes modern minimalism in the United States, the location of his last migration.
Download or read book Mademoiselle Fifi and Other Stories written by Guy de Maupassant and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It was raining as it only rains in Normandy, as though great gouts of water were being sprayed by some angry, giant hand.' Maupassant believed that we delude ourselves into believing that we are not animals acting upon instinct but rational creatures capable of idealistic beliefs and actions and survive only on the drug of self-deception. Maupassant's disgust with creation was only equalled by his contempt for human hypocrisy, and in these tales he takes a scalpel to our illusions and cuts to the bone. But his clinical pessimism is redeemed by a sense of the absurd and a warmer compassion for 'humanity bleeding'. Unsentimental but always honest, he persuades us that life is an incomprehensible, cosmic farce. This translation of twenty tales shows Maupassant at his bitter, bawdy, chilling best. It features some of his grimmest and most famous stories such as A Vendetta and The Grove of Olives, and it also reflects both his moods and his mastery of the short story. The Little Keg is rich in comic invention, while the disturbing Who Can Tell? draws its power from the strange forces which drove its author into madness. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
