Book British Fighter Aircraft in World War I

Download or read book British Fighter Aircraft in World War I written by Mark C. Wilkins and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2021-05-26 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid pictorial history: “Buy this book right now. It is rare that ISD gives an instant five-star rating to any new volume, but [this] is a rare book.” —Indy Squadron Dispatch World War I witnessed unprecedented growth and innovation in aircraft design, construction, and—as the war progressed—mass production. Each country generated its own innovations, sometimes in surprising ways—Albatros Fokker, Pfalz, and Junkers in Germany and Nieuport, Spad, Sopwith, and Bristol in France and Britain. This book focuses on the British approach to fighter design, construction, and mass production. Initially the French led the way in Allied fighter development with their Bleriot trainers, then nimble Nieuport Scouts—culminating with the powerful, fast gun platforms as exemplified by the Spads. The Spads had a major drawback however, in that they were difficult and counterintuitive to fix in the field. The British developed fighters in a very different way; Tommy Sopwith had a distinctive approach to fighter design that relied on lightly loaded wings and simple functional box-girder fuselages. His Camel was revolutionary as it combined all the weight well forward, enabling the Camel to turn very quickly—but also making it an unforgiving fighter for the inexperienced. The Royal Aircraft Factory’s SE5a represented another leap forward with its comfortable cockpit, modern instrumentation, and inline engine—clearly influenced by both Spads and German aircraft. Each manufacturer and design team vied for the upper hand and deftly and quickly appropriated good ideas from other companies—be they friend or foe. Developments in tactics and deployment also influenced design—from the early reconnaissance planes, to turn fighters, and finally planes that relied upon formation tactics, speed, and firepower. This book tells their story through extensive photos and accompanying text. “Handy not only as an aircraft model reference, but also as great reading for all history fans.” —DetailScaleView “Sidebars add important information at the proper place.” —Air Power History

Book Quest for Performance

Download or read book Quest for Performance written by Laurence K. Loftin and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provides access to a NASA History Office publication, NASA SP-468, by Laurence K. Loftin, Jr, NASA Scientific and Technical Information Branch, Washington, D.C. 1985. It traces the technical development of the airplane since World War I. It describes significant aircraft that incorporated important technical innovations and served to shape the future course of aeronautical development, as well as aircraft that represented the state of the art of aeronautical technology in a particular time frame or that were very popular and produced in great numbers. Primary emphasis has been placed on aircraft originating in the United States. The discussion is related primarily to aircraft configuration evolution and associated aerodynamic characteristics and, to a lesser extent, to developments in aircraft construction and propulsion. The material is presented in a manner designed to appeal to the nontechnical reader who is interested in the evolution of the airplane, as well as to students of aeronautical engineering or others with an aeronautical background.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outlook on this insane, sickly, degrading, insecure, ugly world - where the worst and meanest (criminals, predators and parasites) win and rule, not merely the fittest... Is this "the glory of Creation" .. It seems, we live in the world of animals, in a society of inadequate morons not responsible for their actions and deeds, from top to the bottom, worldwide, without any Cosmic guidance and grace... The real issue is not East vs. West, or South vs. North, nor conflict of civilizations, but incompatible antagonism between the upper strata and masses, power/authorities and the people, exploiters and the destitute, Labor and Capital, the Good and the Evil... Conflict between Homo Sapiens and Homo Defectus... Real people's enemies are banks, financial speculators, bureaucracy, mass-media, entertainment and insane politicians... Criminality of the most authorities is in disrespect, contempt for their own people. In majority of the countries the state does not fulfill its due functions, turning into the Monster degrading and terrorizing the people in all spheres. That's the common social decease which can be solved only through transformation of inadequate state into Volksstaat based on equality, collective, just economy...

He has also drawn on interviews with Former Luftwaffe members and on his unparalleled access to von Richthofen family papers and photos."
