Book excerpt: The year was 1997 and Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game had just been released by Interplay. This book looks back at the entire Fallout saga, tells the story of the series' birth, retraces its history and deciphers its mechanics. The perfect book to discover and understand the origins of Fallout, with the saga's genesis and the decryption of each of his episodes ! EXTRACT "The intro music and the end credits were the final main components of this hybrid post-apocalyptic/50s ambiance. Initially, Brian Fargo wanted to signal Fallout’s inspiration with Warriors of the Wasteland, by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, but when he heard The Ink Spots, he changed his mind and loved the result. The first choice was I Don’t Want To Set The World On Fire by this group of crooners from the 1930s/40s, but unfortunately the high cost made it impossible to acquire the rights. But while browsing an extensive list of tracks from the era, the team found that Maybe, by the same group, had almost the same sound-with the added bonus of being cheap! The lyrics are about a break-up, from the point of view of the person being left behind: "Maybe you’ll think of me when you are all alone/ Then maybe you’ll ask me to come back again". Leonard Boyarsky notes that, "It worked with the intro [and the ending]", referring to the ending with the betrayal and lonely exile of Fallout’s hero. "It felt like it was this genius plan we had [...] but it was only later that we decided to kick [the player] out of the Vault. I feel like this is a metaphor for the whole game: it looks like we had a better picture in mind than we did, it just came out of the things we were doing"."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Peter J. Li’s pathbreaking new book, Animal Welfare in China, is timely and valuable.” ANTHROZOÖS The plight of animals in China has attracted intense interest in recent times. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, speculation about the origins of the virus have sparked global curiosity Speculation about the origins of COVID-19 has sparked curiosity about how animals are treated, traded and consumed in China today. In Animal Welfare in China, Peter Li explores the key animal welfare challenges facing China now, including animal agriculture, bear farming, and the trade and consumption of exotic wildlife, dog meat, and other controversial products. He considers how Chinese policymakers have approached these issues and speaks with activists from China’s growing animal rights movement. Li also offers an overview of the history of animal welfare in China, from ancient times through the enormous changes of the 20th and 21st centuries. Some practices that are today described as “traditional,” he argues, are in fact quite recent developments, reflecting the contemporary pursuit of economic growth rather than long-standing cultural traditions. Based on years of fieldwork and analysis, Animal Welfare in China makes a compelling case for a more nuanced and evidence-based approach to these complex issues.

Book The Preview and Other Stories

Download or read book The Preview and Other Stories written by Sŏn-jak Cho and published by Jain Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cho Sun Jak is a prolific South Korean writer of many novels and short stories. Many of his works have been adapted successfully as TV dramas and films, but very few of his works have been available in English till now. He presents an honest and frank view of the reality behind the successful development of modern Korea, with humor and sensitivity. The well-known novella, "The Preview," depicts the Korean War through the eyes of a young boy, and the other stories in this collection reflect the aftermath of the war, the desperate lives of the poor, the corruption of moral values, and the pathos of the lives of good-hearted prostitutes. The translations capture well the atmosphere and values of the period in which the stories were written. Detailed notes clarify linguistic points and the social and cultural context.

Book Laws Policies Attitudes and Processes That Shape the Lives of Puppies in America

Download or read book Laws Policies Attitudes and Processes That Shape the Lives of Puppies in America written by Carmen M. Cusack and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puppies -- nubile, tender, and pure -- have become endeared to U.S. society, and to some extent, the world. Puppies are the holy grail of animal companions to Americans. They are glorified above other animals and protected by numerous laws, yet they are systematically, lawfully, and illegally abused, tortured, and killed. A vast array of opinions, policies, protocols, rules, regulations, and laws govern treatment or mistreatment of puppies demonstrating that appreciation for puppies is neither ubiquitous, nor superseding. Puppies may be subjected to painful product testing in the U.S., but not in Europe, despite their glorified status above other animals. This book details the myriad of laws, policies, attitudes, misfortunes, and processes shaping puppies' lives in America. Specialized topics such as Bestiality, Child Grooming, Pornography, Film, Mythology, and Art are addressed to build an argument that overall, treatment of puppies in the U.S. reflects priorities, needs, values, and morals which are contextually based on human desires, capabilities, survival mechanisms, altruism, American family life, and the economy. The randomized yet selective treatment of puppies typifies American culture, and to some extent other cultures, at least in the American purview. The author analyzes physiological comparisons between humans and dogs to discover why Americans may be so interested in puppies. The foundations of this research are law, social and behavioral science, policies, history, politics, animal studies, animal welfare, criminal justice, sociology, anthropology, and current events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By documenting, analyzing, and interpreting the transformations in the local diets of Asian peoples within the last hundred years, this volume tries to pinpoint the consequences of the tension between homogenization and cultural heterogenization, which is so characteristic for today’s global interaction. By focusing on Asian foodways, the contributors demonstrate how the local and global forces negotiate new hybrid lifestyles, how new commodities become embedded in new cultures and how new identities are embraced through the acceptance and rejection of new forms of consumption. Contributors: Helen Bush, Cheng Sea-ling, Pat Caplan, Katarzyna Cwiertka, Adel P. Den Hartog, Robert W. Pemberton, Anneke Van Otterloo, Boudewijn C. A. Walraven, Merry I. White, Rory Williams.

Book Food National Identity and Nationalism

Download or read book Food National Identity and Nationalism written by Ronald Ranta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-12 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building and expanding on the first edition, the second edition of Food, National Identity and Nationalism continues to explore a much-neglected area study: the relationship between food and nationalism. With a preface written by Michaela DeSoucey and using a wide range of case studies, it demonstrates that food and nationalism is an important area to study, and that the food-nationalism axis provides a useful prism through which to explore and analyse the world around us, from the everyday to the global, and the ways in which it affects us. The second edition includes a number of new case studies, including the demise and resurrection of pie as a ‘national dish’ in post-Brexit Britain; the use of netnography; the role of diasporas in maintaining and reinventing national food; the gastrodiplomatic potential of the New Nordic Cuisine; the potential of veganism to transcend nationalism; and the relationship between gastronationalism and populism.

Book They Eat That

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Deutsch
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2012-01-16
  • ISBN : 0313380597
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book They Eat That written by Jonathan Deutsch and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoroughly engaging encyclopedia considers the rich diversity of unfamiliar foods eaten around the world. The title They Eat That?: A Cultural Encyclopedia of Weird and Exotic Food from around the World says it all. This fun encyclopedia, organized A–Z, describes and offers cultural context for foodstuffs people eat today that might be described as "weird"—at least to the American palate. Entries also include American regional standards, such as scrapple and chitterlings, that other regions might find distasteful, as well as a few mainstream American foods, like honey, that are equally odd when one considers their derivation. A long narrative entry on insects, for example, discusses the fact that insects are enjoyed as a regular part of the diet in some Asian, South and Central American, and African countries. It then looks at the kinds of insects eaten, where and how they are eaten, cultural uses, nutrition, and preparation. Each of the encyclopedia's 100 entries includes a representative recipe or, for a food already prepared like maggoty cheese, describes how it is eaten. Each entry ends with suggested readings.
