Book Does Turkey belong to Europe

Download or read book Does Turkey belong to Europe written by Naomi Creutzfeldt-Banda and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2009-07-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My thesis, entitled ‘Does Turkey belong to Europe? A comparative analysis of the public debate in the media in Germany, France and the UK concerning Turkey’s accession to the EU, from 1999 to 2005’ focused on the issue of whether a European public sphere as manifested in the media of three countries – the UK, Germany, and France exists or is emerging. The formation or lack of formation of a European public sphere was analyzed as a function of identity and values at national and European levels that emerged in a public debate about the accession of Turkey to the EU. The main question of the thesis was whether the accession of Turkey could teach us anything about how national identity and European identity interact on a theme common to all member states. I discussed how for the first time in EU history, it was not the official representatives who decide on the accession but rather the EU decided to leave the decision to the individual states. In other words, the accession of Turkey would depend on referenda in member states. Hence, the national identity was allowed to dominate over a European identity. I examined public attitudes in the three member states towards the EU with the aid of Eurobarometer findings and opinion pieces in national media. Each of the three states differed. Nevertheless, despite the differences, a public debate emerged in terms which overrode these differences. Issues that concerned all of the member states were reported throughout the Union at the same time and at the same level of importance. For example, while there was a correlation between differences and attitudes towards the accession of Turkey, the questions which were raised were the same in the three states. These questions focused on what values underlie identity. If the values attached to a national identity converge then identities too can converge. My research showed that the values more often articulated in the public press related to common religious and historical roots, a common political evolution into democracy, a common abhorrence to war, and a common economic transformation into a welfare state. My thesis compared the convergence of national identities into a European identity on certain specific issues, thereby creating a European public sphere. National identities tend to converge when then citizens in the European regional block compare themselves to American block. This was made clear in the widespread demonstrations in Europe against the American aggression in Iraq. The conclusions were that a European public sphere does not exist, thus, the examined public itself constitutes a sphere where it talks as a European public, finding a common denominator only in matters concerning the EU as a whole (e.g. the community of values debate), whereas for most matters this public seems to keep a foot in more than one sphere – national and European (e.g. the European identity debate). As a result, this public is artificially created as a mixture of spheres and information that is easily manipulated by the media.

Book Turkey and the European Union

Download or read book Turkey and the European Union written by Senem Aydin-Düzgit and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book by two leading experts provides a comprehensive analysis of Turkey's relationship with the European Union, set in its regional and international context. It provides three analytical lenses through which the relationship might be understood – Turkey as an enlargement country, as an EU neighbour and as a global partner – and unpacks the implications of each. Turkey and the European Union focuses on the five pillars that help define the relationship: economics, migration, security, democracy and human rights, and culture and identity. It shows how the differing perspectives on Turkey's role can influence events and developments in these areas, and it traces the profound fluctuations in relations, from the Association Agreement of 1963, to the candidacy for full membership of 1999, to the limbo of today. Turkey continues to be a critically important country for the European Union. The relationship has consequences that are both ideational, embedded in history, politics, identity and culture, and material, relating to economics, energy and security. In examining this complex relationship, this book addresses a key issue for Europe's future, and does so in a fashion that is both sophisticated and accessible.

Book Turkey in Europe

Download or read book Turkey in Europe written by Charles Eliot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. The papers presented in this book were written at various periods, but have a certain unity as being the result of an attempt to understand what is the real condition of Turkey and how that condition has arisen. The author recognises that an adequate knowledge of any one of the many themes here touched upon can only be obtained by lifelong research; but feels that for the purposes of practical politics it is well to see only one side of a question and act accordingly. This book sets itself apart from non-political writers who often impair the value of their work because they devote themselves to a special subject and unconsciously become partisans.

Book EU Turkey Relations

Download or read book EU Turkey Relations written by Wulf Reiners and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book explores the new complexities and ambiguities that epitomize EU-Turkey relations. With a strong focus on the developments in the last decade, the book provides full access to a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted relationship through three entry points: (1) Theories and Concepts, (2) Institutions, and (3) Policies. Part I brings together complementary and competing analytical approaches to study the evolution of EU-Turkey relations, ranging from traditional integration theories to novel concepts. Part II investigates the institutional machinery of EU-Turkey relations by analyzing the roles and perspectives of the European Council, the European Commission, and the European Parliament. Part III offers analyses of the policies most relevant for the relationship: enlargement policy, trade and macroeconomic policies, foreign and security policy, migration and asylum policies, and energy policy. In Part IV, the volume closes with a systematic survey of the conditions under which cooperative trends in EU-Turkey relations could be (re)invigorated. The systematic setup and the balanced combination of distinguished experts from EU- and Turkey-based institutions make this book a fundamental reading for students, researchers, lecturers, and practitioners of EU-Turkey relations, European integration and Turkish foreign policy. Wulf Reiners is Senior Researcher and Head of the Managing Global Governance (MGG) Program of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut fur Entwicklungspolitik (DIE). Ebru Turhan is Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Turkish-German University in Istanbul, Turkey.

Book The Concept of a European Identity Does Turkey culturally fit to Europe

Download or read book The Concept of a European Identity Does Turkey culturally fit to Europe written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Region: Near East, Near Orient, grade: 1,7, University of Frankfurt (Main), language: English, abstract: For more than 50 years, Turkey is waiting at the gates of the European Union (EU). Already in 1963 the European Economic Community (EEC) and Turkey joined an association agreement, the so-called Ankara Agreement, establishing a common customs union. Since then the country strives for a full membership in the EU, in October 2005 the accession negotiations officially began. Ever since an open debate prevailed within the EU on whether Turkey really belongs in the community or not. Reports of honor killings, forced marriages, restricted freedom of expression and freedom of the press or even the recent Gezipark protests heated up the debate among politicians, EU citizens as well as the media. In addition to economic, political, geographic and geostrategic arguments for and against the accession of Turkey, especially one issue is highly debated: Does the Turkey culturally fit in the EU?

Book Travel as a Political Act

Book excerpt: Change the world one trip at a time. In this illuminating collection of stories and lessons from the road, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves shares a powerful message that resonates now more than ever. With the world facing divisive and often frightening events, from Trump, Brexit, and Erdogan, to climate change, nativism, and populism, there's never been a more important time to travel. Rick believes the risks of travel are widely exaggerated, and that fear is for people who don't get out much. After years of living out of a suitcase, he still marvels at how different cultures find different truths to be self-evident. By sharing his experiences from Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East, Rick shows how we can learn more about own country by viewing it from afar. With gripping stories from Rick's decades of exploration, this fully revised edition of Travel as a Political Act is an antidote to the current climate of xenophobia. When we travel thoughtfully, we bring back the most beautiful souvenir of all: a broader perspective on the world that we all call home. All royalties from the sale of Travel as a Political Act are donated to support the work of Bread for the World, a non-partisan organization working to end hunger at home and abroad.

Book Middle Eastern Societies in the 20th Century

Download or read book Middle Eastern Societies in the 20th Century written by Jerzy Zdanowski and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the last 100 years in the Middle East from the perspective of social history. It is apt to date the beginning of the modern Middle East to the industrialization era, while it extends its reach into the present. Taking its lead from modernization theory, this book illustrates past expectations of the present and helps to understand everyday occurrences rather than sensational events. It adopts a multi-disciplinary perspective and concentrates on the relationship between history and social theory. From a historical perspective, the categories of social anthropology and social theory are referred to as social mobility, urbanization, migration, cultural change, gender identities and the young generation. The book addresses the primary issues of importance for the region, namely: natural and human resources; demography and its dynamics; family life; patriarchy and the emancipation of women; class structure and social mobility; ethnic and religious minorities; migration and its impact on culture and politics; refugees’ problems in historical and contemporary contexts; urbanization in the Middle Eastern context; the challenges of development; and, finally, the social and political consequences of the Arab Spring.

In light of that study, Turkey and EU relations might be told in another words and be understood that some historical and cultural effects can determine what society thinks.

Book Turkey and the West

Download or read book Turkey and the West written by Kemal Kirisci and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey: A necessary ally in a troubled region With the new administration in office, it is not clear whether the U.S. will continue to lead and sustain a global liberal order that was already confronted by daunting challenges. These range from a fragile European Union rocked by the United Kingdom’s exit and rising populism to a cold war-like rivalry with Russia and instability in the Middle East. A long-standing member of NATO, Turkey stands as a front-line state in the midst of many of these challenges. Yet, Turkey is failing to play a more constructive role in supporting this order--beyond caring for nearly 3 million refugees, mostly coming from the fighting in Syria--and its current leadership is in frequent disagreement with its Western allies. This tension has been compounded by a failed Turkish foreign policy that aspired to establish its own alternative regional order in the Middle East. As a result, many in the West now question whether Turkey functions as a dependable ally for the United States and other NATO members. Kemal Kirisci’s new book argues that, despite these problems, the domestic and regional realities are now edging Turkey toward improving its relations with the West. A better understanding of these developments will be critical in devising a new and realistic U.S. strategy toward a transformed Turkey and its neighborhood. Western policymakers must keep in mind three on-the-ground realities that might help improve the relationship with Turkey. First, Turkey remains deeply integrated within the transatlantic community, a fact that once imbued it with prestige in its neighborhood. It is this prestige that the recent trajectory of Turkish domestic politics and foreign policy has squandered; for it to be regained, Turkey needs to rebuild cooperation with the West. The second reality is that chaos in the neighborhood has resulted in the loss of lucrative markets for Turkish exports—which, in return, increases the value to Turkey of Western markets. Third, Turkish national security is threatened by developments in Syria and an increasingly assertive Russia, enhancing the strategic value of Turkey’s “troubled alliance” with the West. The big question, however, is whether rising authoritarianism in Turkey and the government’s anti-Western rhetoric will cease and Turkey’s democracy restored before the current fault lines can be overcome and constructive re-engagement between the two sides can occur. In light of these realities, this book discusses the challenges and opportunities for the new U.S. administration as well as the EU of re-engaging with a sometimes-troublesome, yet long-time ally.
