Book Nuclear Waste in Your Backyard

Download or read book Nuclear Waste in Your Backyard written by Robert L. Ferguson and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you care about the environment and the rule of law, then its essential to consider how politics is driving the way were approaching nuclear energy. Robert L. Ferguson, a nuclear energy insider whos spent more than fifty years working in the field, details how he partnered with others to wage a legal battle against two of the most powerful men in the world President Barack Obama and Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and won. The stakes were high: President Obama and his administration suddenly and illegally shut down the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, which violated the law and was a smack in the face to residents of 38 states that expected spent nuclear fuel to be buried at a central location. Arm yourself with the knowledge you need to hold elected officials accountable and ensure that theyre not allowed to flagrantly violate the law. If you dont take time to analyze the issues and do your part to improve U.S. energy policy, you may just end up with Nuclear Waste in Your Backyard indefinitely. Bob Ferguson has written an important bookhis analysis is right on target. I highly recommend his book to be read and acted upon by every American concerned about how partisan politics can trump good science. Such action is especially important for those in positions of policy development. Dr. Alan Waltar, past president of the American Nuclear Society and author of America the Powerless

Book excerpt: Passed in 1982, the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) was an effort to establish an explicit statutory basis for the Dept. of Energy (DoE) to dispose of the nation's most highly radioactive nuclear waste. The NWPA requires DoE to remove spent nuclear fuel from commercial nuclear power plants and transport it to a permanent geologic repository. In 1987, Congress designated Yucca Mountain, NV (YM), as the repository. Contents of this report: Intro.; Establishing a Permanent Geologic Repository for High-Level Nuclear Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel; YM and the Obama Admin.; Blue Ribbon Comm. on America's Nuclear Future; Withdrawal of the YM Construction License; NRC Halts YM License Review; The Future of YM. Book Disposition of High Level Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel

Download or read book Disposition of High Level Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-05 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focused attention by world leaders is needed to address the substantial challenges posed by disposal of spent nuclear fuel from reactors and high-level radioactive waste from processing such fuel. The biggest challenges in achieving safe and secure storage and permanent waste disposal are societal, although technical challenges remain. Disposition of radioactive wastes in a deep geological repository is a sound approach as long as it progresses through a stepwise decision-making process that takes advantage of technical advances, public participation, and international cooperation. Written for concerned citizens as well as policymakers, this book was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and waste management organizations in eight other countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new report from the National Research Council's Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board (NRSB) and the Transportation Research Board reviews the risks and technical and societal concerns for the transport of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in the United States. Shipments are expected to increase as the U.S. Department of Energy opens a repository for spent fuel and high-level waste at Yucca Mountain, and the commercial nuclear industry considers constructing a facility in Utah for temporary storage of spent fuel from some of its nuclear waste plants. The report concludes that there are no fundamental technical barriers to the safe transport of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive and the radiological risks of transport are well understood and generally low. However, there are a number of challenges that must be addressed before large-quantity shipping programs can be implemented successfully. Among these are managing "social" risks. The report does not provide an examination of the security of shipments against malevolent acts but recommends that such an examination be carried out.

Book Nuclear Waste

Download or read book Nuclear Waste written by Mark Gaffigan and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statement of Mark Gaffigan, Mng. Dir., Natural Resources and Environment, GAO. The U.S. has generated over 75,000 metric tons of spent nuclear fuel and high-level nuclear waste -- extremely hazardous substances -- at 80 sites in 35 states and is expected to more than double that amount by 2055. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA) required the Dept. of Energy (DOE) to investigate a geologic repository for nuclear waste. In 1987, Congress amended NWPA to direct DOE to focus on a repository at Yucca Mountain, NV. In 2008, DOE submitted a license application for the repository but in March 2010 moved to withdraw it. However, the Nuclear Regulatory Comm. (NRC) or the courts -- as a result of federal lawsuits -- might compel DOE to resume the licensing process. GAO has reported on options for interim storage of this waste and the effects a Yucca Mountain termination could have on both commercial waste and DOE-managed waste. This testimony is based on that prior work and discusses (1) the status of the Yucca Mountain repository and national policy for nuclear waste disposal, (2) options for storing nuclear waste and their benefits and challenges, and (3) principal lessons that can be learned from past nuclear waste management efforts. Figures. This is a print on demand report.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this environmental impact statement (EIS) is to provide information on potential environmental impacts that could result from a Proposed Action to construct, operate and monitor, and eventually close a geologic repository for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste at the Yucca Mountain site in Nye County, Nevada. The EIS also provides information on potential environmental impacts from an alternative referred to as the No-Action Alternative, under which there would be no development of a geologic repository at Yucca Mountain.

Book Review of the Department of Energy s Plans for Disposal of Surplus Plutonium in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

Download or read book Review of the Department of Energy s Plans for Disposal of Surplus Plutonium in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2018, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine issued an Interim Report evaluating the general viability of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration's (DOE-NNSA's) conceptual plans for disposing of 34 metric tons (MT) of surplus plutonium in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), a deep geologic repository near Carlsbad, New Mexico. It provided a preliminary assessment of the general viability of DOE-NNSA's conceptual plans, focused on some of the barriers to their implementation. This final report addresses the remaining issues and echoes the recommendations from the interim study.
