Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generations of Basques in New York have vibrantly exercised their culture, language, values, and traditions, transmitting to their children a robust sense of ethnic identity. In today's world of globalization it is often assumed that particular communities are disappearing as a consequence of the factors of homogenization. However, the Basques have proved this false. Depicting Basque mutual aid societies, language courses, musical and dance troupes, cuisine classes, community activities, sport, political involvement, and ties to homeland institutions are just a few of the ingredients which mix to compose the chapters of this work. Readers will learn about the history and reasons why Basques left the Pyrenees of northern Spain and southern France from the personal experiences of political and economic exiles' oral histories. Original archival research allows us to discover the features of the early 1900s Centro Vasco-Americano, the Basque Government-in-exile Delegation in New York, and the development of Basque organizations. "Basqueness" is being redefined in this transnational cosmopolitan community, and with the pioneer spirit of their ancestors, latter generation Basques are nurturing and promoting Basque culture and identity to the world.

Book excerpt: Originally published as a revised edition in 1967, this book covers an aspect of Senegalese history of great importance not only for the student of French Colonial policy but also for those interested in the development of nationalism in French-speaking Africa. Senegal was the only French colony in Africa where any sustained attempt was made to implement the much-discussed policy of assimilation. In a concise and authoritative study, the author assesses the effects of this unique experiment in colonial rule and examines the reasons for its failure and repudiation by both France and Senegal, and the marks it left on the latter.

Book excerpt: Managing for Mission lays out the fundamentals of leading a faith-based school to mission excellence. Its central insight is that four models operate within the school: apostolic, pedagogical, community and business. Effective leaders must understand them all and assure that each is functional within itself and supports the other three. Drawing on over 30 years in Jesuit school leadership, Peterson provides a framework for understanding the four dimensions of the school in a new way, gives practical advice about how to harness their power, and points to critical junctures where the separate models must function as a whole. The book is intended to assist administrators, aspiring administrators and board members both within and outside the Jesuit educational realm.

Book Modern Dance in France 1920 1970

Download or read book Modern Dance in France 1920 1970 written by Jacqueline Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was indeed an adventure for those pioneers in France who struggled for the recognition of the new-born dance of the twentieth century - from the free dance of Isadora Duncan, through the absolute dance of Mary Wigman, to the modern dance of Martha Graham. Jacqueline Robinson has lived at the heart of this adventure, sharing the aspirations of a whole generation who often suffered from the lack of understanding of an establishment more inclined towards classical ballet. From the breaking of the soil in the twenties, to the flowering in the sixties, here is a chronicle of the changing landscape of French dance. Here is the story of those men and women, ploughmen and poets, rebels and visionaries - the recollection of those events that made it possible for dance as an art form in Western countries to rise again as a fundamental expression of the human spirit.

Book Minimally Invasive Acute Care Surgery

Download or read book Minimally Invasive Acute Care Surgery written by Kosar A. Khwaja and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is designed to present a comprehensive, up to date and safe approach to managing emergency general surgery patients with a minimally invasive approach. This book bridges the gap between the minimally invasive surgery (MIS) expert who may not routinely be involved in the care of the acute care surgery patient and the ACS expert surgeon who may not have a routine MIS elective practice. The first section reviews the physiology of the acute care surgery patient and the physiologic impact of MIS techniques including pnemoperitoneum in critically ill patients. This review is crucial to assure that the surgeon has a clear understanding of when a MIS approach is safe and when it can be potentially dangerous to the patient. The illustrations are presented in an atlas-style format to describe the surgical procedures. The authors of the various sections are minimally invasive and acute care surgeons from prominent academic centers. The format represents a narrative review with appropriate illustrations and links to online videos.

Book Dreamland Memories

Download or read book Dreamland Memories written by Donna Walters and published by Publishamerica Incorporated. This book was released on 2004-02-23 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreamland Memories is a wonderful collection of poetry written primarily for children, but very readable for adults as well. It contains poetry written about the authoras childhood memories and observations on her way to adulthood. The inspiration for this book was the authoras father. He read to her from infancy from a book called The Golden Book of Poetry, which is no longer in print. She felt the necessity for a similar book that would delight children as she had been delighted. Always fascinated by poetry, she has written an inspiring collection of poems that address many subjects, including nature, death, our fears, and our joys ... things that most people would revel in if they took the time to notice the small things that surround us. The rhyme and rhythmic perfection of the poems in this anthology make it an appealing book for children from eight to eighty.
