Book excerpt: Transcripts of documents from 1578-1792 concerning the discovery, history, and politics of the Philippines, copied from documents in the Real Academia de la Historia in Madrid between 1859 and 1865 by Ventura del Arco, official in the accounting office of the army. Topics covered by some of the earlier documents in the collection include the colonization of the islands by the Spaniards; their campaigns against the Sangleys; their rivalries with the Dutch for control of the Pacific; and the establishment of trade routes between Manila and Acapulco. Letters, petitions, and accounts from members of the religious orders, especially the Jesuits, reflect their great influence in ecclesiastical and political matters of the Philippines. Many of the documents in volume 3 concern the church-state conflicts between archbishop Felipe Pardo (1677-1680), the Real Audiencia, and governor Juan de Vargas (1678-1684). Other materials relate to the activities of the early govenors of the Philippines, such as Francisco de Sande, Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera, and Sabiniano Manrique de Lara, and document the imprisonment of governor Diego de Salcedo by the Inquisition on charges of heresy, and his death at sea, en route to Mexico to stand trial. Also included are letters from Simón de Anda y Salazar, concerning his activities as governor of the Philippines during the British invasion of 1762, as well as a brief biography, which appears to be a work by Ventura del Arco. Volume 5 contains a copy of the famous 1621 memorial to the king by Hernando de los Rios Coronel, describing early discoverers of the Philippines, the strategic and political importance of the islands to the Crown, the great wealth of these lands, and the best means of maintaining and developing them.

Narratives of Europe’s westward expansion often tell of how the Americas came to be known as a distinct landmass, separate from Asia and uniquely positioned as new ground ripe for transatlantic colonialism. But this geographic vision of the Americas was not shared by all Europeans. While some imperialists imagined North and Central America as undiscovered land, the Spanish pushed to define the New World as part of a larger and eminently flexible geography that they called las Indias, and that by right, belonged to the Crown of Castile and León. Las Indias included all of the New World as well as East and Southeast Asia, although Spain’s understanding of the relationship between the two areas changed as the realities of the Pacific Rim came into sharper focus. At first, the Spanish insisted that North and Central America were an extension of the continent of Asia. Eventually, they came to understand East and Southeast Asia as a transpacific extension of their empire in America called las Indias del poniente, or the Indies of the Setting Sun. The Indies of the Setting Sun charts the Spanish vision of a transpacific imperial expanse, beginning with Balboa’s discovery of the South Sea and ending almost a hundred years later with Spain’s final push for control of the Pacific. Padrón traces a series of attempts—both cartographic and discursive—to map the space from Mexico to Malacca, revealing the geopolitical imaginations at play in the quest for control of the New World and Asia.

Visitors to the Philippines might find it surprising that images of Catholic saints, the Child Christ, and the Virgin Mary can be seen in all kinds of public and private spaces throughout this Asian country, such as in restaurants, shopping malls, pasted to walls, painted on buses, and of course, in-home altars. Many of these saints bear Spanish names and their legends almost always date to the period of Spanish colonialism. Saints of Resistance: Devotions in the Philippines under Early Spanish Rule explores why, in spite of their fraught history with Spanish colonialism (which ended in 1898), Filipinos have staunchly held on to the faith in their saints. This is the first scholarly study to focus on the dynamic life of saints and their devotees in the Spanish Philippines, from the sixteenth through the early part of the eighteenth century. The book offers an in-depth analysis of the origins and development of the beliefs and rituals surrounding some of the most popular saints in the Philippines, namely, Santo Niño de Cebu, Our Lady of Caysasay, Our Lady of La Naval, and Our Lady of Antipolo. Christina Lee recovers the voices of colonized Philippine subjects as well as those of Spaniards who, through the veneration of miraculous saints, projected and relieved their grievances, anxieties, and histories of communal suffering. Based on critical readings of primary sources, the book traces how individuals and their communities often refashioned iconographic devotions to the Holy Child and to the Virgin Mary by introducing non-Catholic elements derived from pre-Hispanic, animistic, and Chinese traditions. Ultimately, the book reveals how Philippine natives, Chinese migrants, and Spaniards reshaped the imported devotions as expressions of dissidence, resistance, and survival.
