Book excerpt: Nellie White (née Askey) was born in 1906 and brought up in a working-class Darlaston family. Her daughter, Marion Rowley, has compiled this book from memories passed on by Nellie, and the result paints a vivid picture of the Darlaston that has disappeared. The folk who walked the streets of this bustling little town and lived in its back-to-back houses would not recognize it today. The changing face of Darlaston is discovered here, set against the backdrop of Nellie's own life, and we see her through childhood and schooldays, times of privation, teenage years, and marriage. Nellie's memories were recorded during her old age, and she recalls in astonishing detail the minutiae of everyday life in this part of the Black Country during the first half of the 20th century. This book will be a valuable record of days gone by and is sure to appeal to those interested in the social history of the Black Country.

Book Half in Shadow

Download or read book Half in Shadow written by Shanna Greene Benjamin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nellie Y. McKay (1930–2006) was a pivotal figure in contemporary American letters. The author of several books, McKay is best known for coediting the canon-making with Henry Louis Gates Jr., which helped secure a place for the scholarly study of Black writing that had been ignored by white academia. However, there is more to McKay's life and legacy than her literary scholarship. After her passing, new details about McKay's life emerged, surprising everyone who knew her. Why did McKay choose to hide so many details of her past? Shanna Greene Benjamin examines McKay's path through the professoriate to learn about the strategies, sacrifices, and successes of contemporary Black women in the American academy. Benjamin shows that McKay's secrecy was a necessary tactic that a Black, working-class woman had to employ to succeed in the white-dominated space of the American English department. Using extensive archives and personal correspondence, Benjamin brings together McKay’s private life and public work to expand how we think about Black literary history and the place of Black women in American culture.

Sydney Avey calls into vivid existence someone she has never met." – Caitlin Hicks, author of A Theory of Expanded Love There is power in justice and forgiveness. When her parents marry off Kansas-born Nellie Belle to the ranch foreman, she never questions that motherhood will follow. But at the dawn of the progressive era, dissatisfied Nellie seizes an opportunity to move west and start a new life. Yearning to find a sense of self-worth, Nellie leaves behind her husband and son and takes her two daughters to the Northwest. She charges forward to become the first woman court reporter to travel the circuit in the region. In small-town makeshift courtrooms and growing cities boasting new halls of justice, Nellie's strength touches many lives: independent-minded lawmen, enterprising women, hard-working immigrants, and a number of cads. But when her prodigal youngest returns home with a babe in arms, Nellie must do what she can to pull together the remains of her scattered family.
