Download or read book Chasing My Cure written by David Fajgenbaum and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LOS ANGELES TIMES AND PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BESTSELLER • The powerful memoir of a young doctor and former college athlete diagnosed with a rare disease who spearheaded the search for a cure—and became a champion for a new approach to medical research. “A wonderful and moving chronicle of a doctor’s relentless pursuit, this book serves both patients and physicians in demystifying the science that lies behind medicine.”—Siddhartha Mukherjee, New York Times bestselling author of The Emperor of All Maladies and The Gene David Fajgenbaum, a former Georgetown quarterback, was nicknamed the Beast in medical school, where he was also known for his unmatched mental stamina. But things changed dramatically when he began suffering from inexplicable fatigue. In a matter of weeks, his organs were failing and he was read his last rites. Doctors were baffled by his condition, which they had yet to even diagnose. Floating in and out of consciousness, Fajgenbaum prayed for a second chance, the equivalent of a dramatic play to second the game into overtime. Miraculously, Fajgenbaum survived—only to endure repeated near-death relapses from what would eventually be identified as a form of Castleman disease, an extremely deadly and rare condition that acts like a cross between cancer and an autoimmune disorder. When he relapsed while on the only drug in development and realized that the medical community was unlikely to make progress in time to save his life, Fajgenbaum turned his desperate hope for a cure into concrete action: Between hospitalizations he studied his own charts and tested his own blood samples, looking for clues that could unlock a new treatment. With the help of family, friends, and mentors, he also reached out to other Castleman disease patients and physicians, and eventually came up with an ambitious plan to crowdsource the most promising research questions and recruit world-class researchers to tackle them. Instead of waiting for the scientific stars to align, he would attempt to align them himself. More than five years later and now married to his college sweetheart, Fajgenbaum has seen his hard work pay off: A treatment he identified has induced a tentative remission and his novel approach to collaborative scientific inquiry has become a blueprint for advancing rare disease research. His incredible story demonstrates the potency of hope, and what can happen when the forces of determination, love, family, faith, and serendipity collide. Praise for Chasing My Cure “A page-turning chronicle of living, nearly dying, and discovering what it really means to be invincible in hope.”—Angela Duckworth, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Grit “[A] remarkable memoir . . . Fajgenbaum writes lucidly and movingly . . . Fajgenbaum’s stirring account of his illness will inspire readers.”—Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: “A joyful celebration of fan love. Unofficial episode guides don’t come much more engaging than this” (Benjamin Cook, co-author of Doctor Who: The Writer’s Tale). Doctor Who was already the world’s longest-running science fiction series when it returned in 2005 to huge success. Enormously popular, the BBC show encompasses multiple other genres, from horror to comedy to action and historical adventure, and is loved for its uniquely British wit and clever scripting. Its hero, its monsters, and even its theme song have become pop culture icons. In this volume covering six seasons of the new series, two Doctor Who experts provide insights into everything from the history of the show, including Daleks, Cybermen, and the eight Classic Series Doctors, to a detailed episode guide. As Neil Gaiman complained to the authors, “I have just lost four hours to your blasted book. And I only meant to glance at it.” Allons-y!

Download or read book Near On written by Ocean Strata and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Near On is about the duality of all people. We're all good and bad- even the best of us. Interwoven in the book are three main elements: 1) Loss - The author’s best friend lost his daughter at a very young age to brain cancer and he explores how we all experience grief differently throughout different points in our life. 2) Racism - As an African American man, the author wanted to look at the subtleties of racism he has experienced and give a different point of view of how we ALL wrong each other in small - not "in your face"- ways. 3) The Multiverse - He explores a fascinating topic that we know little to nothing about. There are many times in the story where there aren't clear cut answers - much like the reality of things. This is the first of three books the author has planned in this realm. The story is unique and compelling because the characters are relatable. The writing is designed to be grounded. The dialog is in a fashion where people talk to each other in the real world and people behave in a "normal" way. About the Author Ocean Strata grew up in Santa Monica, California, in a not-so-great neighborhood where he was raised by a single mom. Most kids left to their own devices may have gotten into trouble, but Strata chose to go to the library and read most days. He went to USC on an academic scholarship and graduated from Marshall School of Business. Strata found joy and peace in writing and in the technology industry. As a black man in sales and corporate America, he has experienced both beautiful behavior and sub-par behavior. He feels that all of his experiences drove his passion to tell a story about the middle ground - about the grey. He met his wife in banking, and they now have twin toddlers - a boy and a girl - his hardest job to date.
Download or read book The Doctor and the Apostle written by Jeffrey A. Nelson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What could a first-century church planter and tentmaker who helped forge the earliest years of a new religious movement possibly have in common with a British time traveling alien who first appeared in the 1960s to teach children about history? Doctor Who has been a beloved science fiction franchise for over fifty years. Paul’s letters have been around for quite a while longer, with the earliest ones that he wrote dated less than a generation after the life of Jesus. Both have inspired and instructed people on how to live and have stoked the imagination for what individual and communal life can be in their own way. And both were or are deeply flawed, sometimes struggling against their own tendencies or those of others in order to help bring about something greater for their respective worlds. The Doctor and the Apostle explores the similarities and differences between Doctor Who’s title character and Paul of Tarsus, comparing and contrasting the stories of each. Whether a fan of one or the other or both, the reader will gain a greater understanding of the possibilities of a life of faith, as well as a deeper appreciation of how pop culture and Scripture may help inform one another.

Download or read book Hair Research written by C.E. Orfanos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 903 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago a friendly looking young man walked into my office at the University Department of Dermatology in Cologne, introduced himself as a diplomate chemist, executive member of a family-owned, rather small German company manufacturing hair care products, and proposed to me straight forward to organize an international meeting on hair research. In view of the large number of new developments in the field something like this should be done after all, he said; he also promised to provide financial support. Such a meeting should be on the highest possible level, I said; and he agreed. I took the challenge and my visitor kept his promise. Three years later the First International Hair Congress was organized at the sophisticated new Congress Center in Hamburg, in which 630 participants from 36 countries were registered. After three and a half days of formal sessions, informal discussions, workshops and poster presentations our unanimous feeling was that this has been a most successful meeting. The young chemist was right. The idea was excellent. The growth and presence of hair and its distribution over the human body as a cosmetic attribute has become during the last two decades a matter of tremendous emotional significance. Hair can be rather easily formed according to one's sence of style, representing his personal image and his social feeling. If it becomes unacceptable or out of fashion, the hair style can be easily changed; the hair regrows as a biological requisite, without any additional cost.
