Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2021 National Book Award for Poetry From the winner of the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize come masterfully crafted narratives of protest, grief and love. Martín Espada is a poet who "stirs in us an undeniable social consciousness," says Richard Blanco. Floaters offers exuberant odes and defiant elegies, songs of protest and songs of love from one of the essential voices in American poetry. Floaters takes its title from a term used by certain Border Patrol agents to describe migrants who drown trying to cross over. The title poem responds to the viral photograph of Óscar and Valeria, a Salvadoran father and daughter who drowned in the Río Grande, and allegations posted in the "I’m 10-15" Border Patrol Facebook group that the photo was faked. Espada bears eloquent witness to confrontations with anti-immigrant bigotry as a tenant lawyer years ago, and now sings the praises of Central American adolescents kicking soccer balls over a barbed wire fence in an internment camp founded on that same bigotry. He also knows that times of hate call for poems of love—even in the voice of a cantankerous Galápagos tortoise. The collection ranges from historical epic to achingly personal lyrics about growing up, the baseball that drops from the sky and smacks Espada in the eye as he contemplates a girl’s gently racist question. Whether celebrating the visionaries—the fallen dreamers, rebels and poets—or condemning the outrageous governmental neglect of his father’s Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane María, Espada invokes ferocious, incandescent spirits.

After the Big Flood, his old city of Houston lies under the new Sea of Mexico, but at least Andrew knows that his siblings, Liz and Mark, have been safely settled in Colorado. But Ensign Andrew Green is still far from Texas or Colorado as he patrols the Sea of Mexico over what used to be most of Florida. During this time, he works long hours to do his duty and retreats inside his head to relieve his loneliness and imagine a world that should have been. Then his group gets called to deliver supplies to the floating city of New Miami. Andrew meets a lovely young “floater” woman named Clara, but she's got secrets that can threaten Andrew's career and even his life. Andrew, recruited and promoted too young, feels like a kid in a sailor suit as the crew tries to beat the storm and rescue anybody they can. Still, he can't help thinking of Clara. But is this a good time to fall in love with a woman who may have almost ruined his career and even risked his life?

Book Floaters

Book excerpt: Their friends warned them. Colleagues offered alternatives. Her mother tried to talk her out of it. For twenty years, the couple had thrived floating between campuses, ships, and ports, rarely together. Geography was about to become their destiny. The happily married, middle-aged couple had only lived together for eight years yet married for twenty. Joe and Paula Martin's marriage had succeeded even though Joe was away at sea for months while she taught at her small college in Pennsylvania. After decades as captain of sea-going ships, Joe was about to take a shore-side job, 5,000 miles away from Paula. She had a sabbatical and would join him for a year. It would be the first time they'd live together for more than three months at a stretch. And they'd do so in Alaska, on a 33½ foot boat. Floaters travels from central Pennsylvania, along the Alaska Highway, to Juneau, Southeast Alaska, the Inside Passage, and beyond. Joe worked as a Port Captain while searching for a ship's pilot position. Paula worked on her book in between field classes. Alaska travels, wildlife, boat maintenance, conflict avoidance, and dreams of a dog arose during their year together. Would their romance survive the experience? Would their marriage? And would the boat?

Book Vision for Life Revised Edition

Download or read book Vision for Life Revised Edition written by Meir Schneider, Ph.D. and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All parts of the body need exercise for optimal health, and the eyes are no different. Vision for Life presents an approach to eye health for people with 20/20 vision who wish to maintain their perfect vision as well as people who see poorly and would like to improve their eyesight. Clients of the Meir Schneider Self-Healing Method experience their own capacity to bring about recovery, reversing the progress of a wide range of degenerative conditions including eye disease. Based in part on the established Bates Method of eyesight improvement and in part on his own professional and personal discoveries, Meir Schneider's pioneering approach has helped thousands of people successfully treat a host of eye problems, including near- and farsightedness, astigmatism, lazy eye, double vision, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, retinitis pigmentosa, and nystagmus. This revised edition includes a new chapter on children's eye health and new research and exercises for specific conditions, i.e., glaucoma and nystagmus, near- and farsightedness. Born blind to deaf parents, Schneider underwent a series of painful operations as a young child and was left with 99 percent scar tissue on the lenses of his eyes, resulting in his being declared incurably blind. At the age of seventeen, he discovered how to improve his vision from less than 1 percent to 55 percent of normal vision with the eye exercises presented in this book. Today Schneider drives a car, reads, and enjoys the benefits of full natural vision. He and his clients prove time and time again how much vision can improve with exercise. His contributions to the field of self-healing are recognized by alternative health practitioners and medical doctors alike. In Vision for Life, Schneider shares forty years of discoveries made on his personal and professional journey. The book details simple but effective techniques to gain great vision such as sunning and palming. Such exercises are not only strengthening but also restorative and deeply relaxing. The reader learns how to reverse developing issues before they cause damage or to remedy existing problems, including pathologies such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and optic nerve neuropathy.
