Book The Impact of Self Efficacy on the Academic Success of Online RN BSN Students

Download or read book The Impact of Self Efficacy on the Academic Success of Online RN BSN Students written by Tamera Nutter and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to examine the impact of self-efficacy on the academic success of online RN-BSN students. This quantitative, retrospective, quasi-experimental designed study utilized a convenience sample of online RN-BSN students. A pre- and post-course test to measure changes in self-efficacy was used, and these results were then compared to student outcomes measured by on-time progress at the end of the first six-month term. Demographic variables included gender, age, ethnicity, and current employment. Coursework specific to self efficacy will be addressed as part of the larger course, and four components of self-efficacy will be measured in the pre- and post-CSASS survey: enactive mastery; vicarious experiences; social persuasion; and, emotional experience (Farr, Rotermund, Ho, Radwin, & Robles, 2011). Data were analyzed for both 73 pairs and 263 pairs (not taking and taking the C820 course) of students, utilizing frequencies to analyze demographic data and a chi square test to determine any impact of self-efficacy. A paired samples t-test was used to determine if there was any statistical difference in academic success as measured by first-term OTP between students who did not take and students who did take the C820 course.

Book Self efficacy in Freshman and Sophomore Nursing Students

Download or read book Self efficacy in Freshman and Sophomore Nursing Students written by Mary B. Chatman and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthcare disparities and inequities have been at the forefront of the health agenda, thus supporting that minority healthcare is of poorer quality than that experienced by the majority population. Compounding this issue is the fact that our nation is growing more diverse. Only modest strides have been made to increase the diversity in the nursing workforce so patient care needs can be better met. Using a 99-item survey, this study evaluates the relationship between personal factors, community factors, and the level of self-efficacy related to nursing as a career in pre-nursing minority students in higher education. The sample consisted of 88 African American and Caucasian freshman and sophomore students. No statistically significant differences were found between the two ethic groups in nursing academic, clinical self-efficacy, or general self-efficacy. Differences were found between the ethnic groups in the kinds of social support needed by the students. These findings suggest that when minorities have relatively the same personal and community influencing factors as Caucasian students, they achieve comparable levels of self-efficacy. These findings may suggest that other variables and perhaps other theories need to be examined.

Book Relationships Between Experiential Learning and Effects on Senior Nursing Students Self Efficacy and Knowledge

Download or read book Relationships Between Experiential Learning and Effects on Senior Nursing Students Self Efficacy and Knowledge written by Shanna Akers and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing nursing students to transition into the professional registered nurse role is the task of nurse educators. These educators must train students to function in multiple nursing specialties post-graduation, to include critical care. As more nursing graduates enter into areas such as intensive care units and emergency rooms, nurse educators must prepare them to work with critically ill patients. Increased exposure to critical care clinical experiences and simulations may be one method to prepare them for these complex, high-acuity patient situations. In order to determine whether or not a relationship exists between increased hours of experience and effects on self-efficacy and knowledge, the Nursing Student Self-Efficacy Scale (NSSES) and the Basic Knowledge Assessment Test-8 (BKAT-8) was administered to senior nursing students in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) pre-licensure program during their final semester. Hierarchical regression analysis evaluated each variable in the regression model. Control variables included age, gender, ethnicity, prior experience, and preferred initial job placement. Predictor variables (independent variables) were clinical hours and simulation hours. Data indicates a positive relationship for each predictive variable to both the NSSES and BKAT-8. Additionally, clinical hours and simulation hours do contribute to the overall predictive model for NSSES and BKAT-8 outcomes. Practical implications and suggestions for future research are addressed.

Book Effect of a Student Success Program on the Academic Success of First Semester Junior BSN Students

Download or read book Effect of a Student Success Program on the Academic Success of First Semester Junior BSN Students written by Ann H. Black and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem: The expectation of the current nurse workforce is to deliver safe quality care while meeting the demands of an ever-changing healthcare system. More nurses are needed to combat the ongoing nursing shortage, as Baby Boomers reach retirement and the need for health care continues to rise. The healthcare industry has a vested interest in schools of nursing graduation rates as they impact the needed supply of nurses to fill vacant positions. Multiple variables collectively influence student success in a nursing program. Many students do not realize the rigor of a nursing curriculum until they are in the midst of it. Attrition rates, at all degree levels, are high across the United States. It is imperative that nursing programs take a proactive approach and utilize best practices to assist qualified students to succeed academically. -- Purpose: The purpose of the project was to determine if first semester nursing students who participate in a student success program would have a higher percentage of academic success than those students who did not participate. -- Background: Schools of Nursing are under pressure to increase their number of graduates to meet the nursing workforce demand. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) states that an increase in Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) prepared nurses is imperative to provide the care needed in a complex healthcare system and has set a goal of increasing the percentage of currently employed nurses with a BSN to 80% by 2020 (IOM, 2011). Schools of nursing need to provide essential measures to assist in student success, decrease attrition, and enable students to graduate from nursing programs so they can pursue becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) in order to join the nursing workforce. -- Project Implementation: The goal for this DNP project was to decrease the attrition rate of first semester students in a BSN program by utilizing a collaborative student success program and identifying students at risk for failure early in their nursing education journey. -- Outcome: This project resulted in the development of a student success program that provided each student entering a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program with strategies to promote academic success through the first semester of their nursing education. Following assessment and analysis of multiple variables that could affect academic success, all students had the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and Academic Advising staff and develop an individualized plan with supportive interventions. The goal of a required, proactive approach was to identify students at risk for failure early in their nursing education and provide assistance in order to decrease attrition. The attrition rate at the end of the first semester following the student success program implementation was 22.2%, less than the 38.8% attrition rate from the previous fall without a student success program in place. The SNAP program will be sustained, with continued monitoring and evaluation of each student's plan throughout the BSN curriculum.

Book The Use of an Unfolding Case Study to Enhance Self efficacy in Nursing Students

Download or read book The Use of an Unfolding Case Study to Enhance Self efficacy in Nursing Students written by Hettie V. Peele and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurse educators are challenged with preparing new nurse graduates that can function in the current healthcare practice environment of high patient acuity, morbidities, and information technology while maintaining patient safety and quality care management (Cronenwett et al., 2007). Therefore, nurse educators are amenable to exploring alternative teaching pedagogies that provide students with engaging learning opportunities that simulate real-life clinical scenarios they may encounter in professional nursing practice. This study explored the use of an unfolding case study as an innovative teaching strategy to enhance the perception of student self-efficacy. A one-group pretest-posttest descriptive design with a convenience sample of 17 second year associate degree nursing students enrolled in a complex health concepts course was utilized. The General Self-Efficacy Scale was used to measure perceived self-efficacy pre- and post- participation in an unfolding case study. The pretest mean was 3.20 (sd = 0.356) and the posttest mean was 3.38 (sd =0.396). The paired t-test result was 0.182 (sd = 0.300) with a statistical significance of 0.024.The results of this study supported the use of an unfolding case study as a teaching pedagogy to enhance nursing students’ self-efficacy as they transition to enter professional nursing. Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977, 1986) and situation learning theory (Lave & Wenger, 1991) guided the conceptual framework of this study.

Book Student Nurses Perception of Self efficacy and Perceived Clinical Judgment Through the Use of Multi patient Simulation

Download or read book Student Nurses Perception of Self efficacy and Perceived Clinical Judgment Through the Use of Multi patient Simulation written by Laura J Corson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New nurse graduates may be ill-prepared to care for multiple patients in the acute care setting due to limited clinical experience. Nurse educators must find ways of bridging the theory-to-practice gap. High-fidelity simulation is one mechanism for bridging this gap. This pilot study explored the effect of multi-patient simulation (MPS) on students' self-efficacy and perceived clinical judgment. This quasi-experimental study sought to explore the readiness of BSN students to care for multiple patients through the use of MPS and a self-efficacy survey measuring perceived level of confidence (LOC) in clinical care. Findings were inconclusive regarding whether MPS as a teaching method helped nursing students increase their perceived LOC and improve clinical judgment skills. Students agreed that the design should be part of nursing education and it identified gaps in their knowledge. This study raised an awareness of what students lack in terms of prioritization management when caring for multiple patients.

Book The Influence of Study Strategies on Academic Success for First Semester Upper division Nursing Students

Download or read book The Influence of Study Strategies on Academic Success for First Semester Upper division Nursing Students written by Susan R. Beulke and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to determine if specific study strategies make a statistical difference in grade outcomes for first semester upper-division nursing students in a baccalaureate program. The dilemma for nursing professors is to assist students in selecting the most effective study strategies to promote their success in nursing education. The results of this study may assist nursing programs in developing strategies to help nursing students improve their nursing grade point average (GPA) and thereby promote student success. The intent of this research is to answer the question: Is there a correlation between specific study strategies and grade outcomes in the first semester for upper-division baccalaureate nursing students?"--leaf 11.

Book Self efficacy as a Predictor of NCLEX Success

Download or read book Self efficacy as a Predictor of NCLEX Success written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A literature review was completed on self-efficacy related to academic success. Due to limited recent literature on this topic, the review ranged from 1986-2014 to include some of the landmark work of Albert Bandura, who developed the Theory of Self-Efficacy. This collaborative research project answered three questions. First, does student self-efficacy, either general or college self-efficacy, predict NCLEX-RN readiness as compared with an academic point system used by a small Midwestern university? Secondly, is there a relationship between general self-efficacy and college self-efficacy? Lastly, will either general or college self-efficacy increase over time?"--leaf 3.
