Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades after his last game in 1976, Darrell K Royal remains "The Coach," the winningest football coach in University of Texas history. The driving force behind eleven Southwest Conference and three national championships, winner of Coach of the Year and Coach of the Decade awards, and honored namesake of the Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, Royal is still revered as "a coach who would rather lose a game than engage in unsportsmanlike tactics; who would neither make excuses for losing nor brag about winning; and who by his own example contributes to the building of stalwart character in men," in the words of the City of Austin's "Darrell Royal Day" proclamation. DKR offers an intimate, insider's view of the private life of the man behind the legend through an extraordinary collection of never-before-published photographs, letters, newspaper clippings, football ephemera, recollections, and "Royalisms" lovingly preserved by Royal's wife of more than sixty-five years, Edith. This irreplaceable family archive offers revealing snapshots of Royal's entire life, from his impoverished youth in Oklahoma, through his courtship of Edith and his glory days as a player at Oklahoma and a coach at Texas, to his retirement career as a goodwill ambassador for the university. Accompanying the images are moving recollections from fellow coaches and former players, family members, and friends who testify to Royal's honesty and integrity and the transformative effect that his character has had on the legions of people whose lives he has touched.

Book Computer Vision Systems

Download or read book Computer Vision Systems written by Bernt Schiele and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the highly successful International Conference on Computer Vision - stems held in Las Palmas, Spain (ICVS’99), this second International Workshop on Computer Vision Systems, ICVS 2001 was held as an associated workshop of the International Conference on Computer Vision in Vancouver, Canada. The organization of ICVS’99 and ICVS 2001 was motivated by the fact that the - jority of computer vision conferences focus on component technologies. However, Computer Vision has reached a level of maturity that allows us not only to p- form research on individual methods and system components but also to build fully integrated computer vision systems of signi cant complexity. This opens a number of new problems related to system architecture, methods for system synthesis and veri cation, active vision systems, control of perception and - tion, knowledge and system representation, context modeling, cue integration, etc. By focusing on methods and concepts for the construction of fully integrated vision systems, ICVS aims to bring together researchers interested in computer vision systems. Similar to the previous event in Las Palmas, ICVS 2001 was organized as a single-track workshop consisting of high-quality, previously unpublished papers on new and original research on computer vision systems. All contributions were presented orally. A total of 32 papers were submitted and reviewed thoroughly by program committee members. Twenty of them have been selected for p- sentation. We would like to thank all members of the organizing and program committee for their help in putting together a high-quality workshop.

Book Comprehensive Chirality

Download or read book Comprehensive Chirality written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 5635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many books exist on the subject of chiral chemistry, they only briefly cover chiral synthesis and analysis as a minor part of a larger work, to date there are none that pull together the background information and latest advances in one comprehensive reference work. Comprehensive Chirality provides a complete overview of the field, and includes chiral research relevant to synthesis, analytic chemistry, catalysis, and pharmaceuticals. The individual chapters in each of the 9 volumes provide an in depth review and collection of references on definition, technology, applications and a guide/links to the related literature. Whether in an Academic or Corporate setting, these chapters will form an invaluable resource for advanced students/researchers new to an area and those who need further background or answers to a particular problem, particularly in the development of drugs. Chirality research today is a central theme in chemistry and biology and is growing in importance across a number of disciplinary boundaries. These studies do not always share a unique identifying factor or subject themselves to clear and concise definitions. This work unites the different areas of research and allows anyone working or researching in chiral chemistry to navigate through the most essential concepts with ease, saving them time and vastly improving their understanding. The field of chirality counts several journals that are directly and indirectly concerned with the field. There is no reference work that encompasses the entire field and unites the different areas of research through deep foundational reviews. Comprehensive Chirality fills this vacuum, and can be considered the definitive work. It will help users apply context to the diverse journal literature offering and aid them in identifying areas for further research and/or for solving problems. Chief Editors, Hisashi Yamamoto (University of Chicago) and Erick Carreira (ETH Zürich) have assembled an impressive, world-class team of Volume Editors and Contributing Authors. Each chapter has been painstakingly reviewed and checked for consistent high quality. The result is an authoritative overview which ties the literature together and provides the user with a reliable background information and citation resource.

Book Biomimicry for Optimization Control and Automation

This book was released on 2005-09-08 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomimicry uses our scienti?c understanding of biological systems to exploit ideas from nature in order to construct some technology. In this book, we focus onhowtousebiomimicryof the functionaloperationofthe “hardwareandso- ware” of biological systems for the development of optimization algorithms and feedbackcontrolsystemsthatextendourcapabilitiestoimplementsophisticated levels of automation. The primary focus is not on the modeling, emulation, or analysis of some biological system. The focus is on using “bio-inspiration” to inject new ideas, techniques, and perspective into the engineering of complex automation systems. There are many biological processes that, at some level of abstraction, can berepresentedasoptimizationprocesses, manyofwhichhaveasa basicpurpose automatic control, decision making, or automation. For instance, at the level of everyday experience, we can view the actions of a human operator of some process (e. g. , the driver of a car) as being a series of the best choices he or she makes in trying to achieve some goal (staying on the road); emulation of this decision-making process amounts to modeling a type of biological optimization and decision-making process, and implementation of the resulting algorithm results in “human mimicry” for automation. There are clearer examples of - ological optimization processes that are used for control and automation when you consider nonhuman biological or behavioral processes, or the (internal) - ology of the human and not the resulting external behavioral characteristics (like driving a car). For instance, there are homeostasis processes where, for instance, temperature is regulated in the human body.

Book Three Armies in Britain

Download or read book Three Armies in Britain written by Douglas Biggs and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reexamines the political and military aspects of the Revolution of 1399 that removed Richard II and placed Henry of Lancaster on the English throne. It argues that Henry of Lancaster was not the "all conquering" hero of 1399 but was rather the leader of a coalition of disaffected noblemen who had old scores to settle with Richard II. It also proposes that Richard II was not an incompetent king whose personality disorder(s) and/or tyrannical behavior brought about his fall. Rather, it argues that the king was in no worse a political position in 1399 than in 1387 or even 1381. As on the previous two great crises of the reign, the king forwent a military option of dealing with his opponents and decided to let the issues of 1399 play themselves out on the field of politics. Both in 1381 and 1387 this tactic had proven effective and there was nothing to suggest in 1399 that it would not be so again.

Book Towards a Philosophy of Critical Mathematics Education

Download or read book Towards a Philosophy of Critical Mathematics Education written by Ole Skovsmose and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nineteen Eighty-Four George Orwell gives a description of different forms of suppression. We learn about the telescreens placed everywhere, through which it is possible for Big-Brother to watch the inhabitants of Oceania. However, it is not only important to control the activities of the inhabitants, it is important as well to control their thoughts, and the Thought Police are on guard. This is a very direct form of monitoring and control, but Orwell also outlines a more imperceptible and calculated line of thought control. In the Appendix to Nineteen Eighty-Four Orwell explains some struc tures of 'Newspeak', which is going to become the official language of Oceania. Newspeak is being developed by the Ministry of Truth, and this language has to substitute 'Oldspeak' (similar to standard English). Newspeak should fit with the official politics of Oceania ruled by the Ingsoc party: "The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the world-view and mental habits proper to the devotees of Ingsoc, but to make all other modes of thought impos sible. It was intended that when Newspeak had been adopted once and for all and Oldspeak forgotten, a heretical thought - that is, a thought diverging from the principles of Ingsoc - should be literally unthink able, at least as far as thought is dependent on words.

Book Treasury of Precious Qualities Book Two

Book Chirality from Dynamic Kinetic Resolution

Download or read book Chirality from Dynamic Kinetic Resolution written by Helene Pellissier and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2011-04-04 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last 15 years have witnessed significant developments in the efficiency and scope of the application of DKR. These now offer a serious alternative to conventional methods for asymmetric synthesis. Indeed, impressive examples using new enzymes and major progress in the DKR of racemates have taken place over the past few years. The powerful combination of enzymes and metals has also been the subject of spectacular development. In addition, a new type of DKR, involving organocatalysts, has recently appeared. Although asymmetric catalysis has undergone development during the last two decades, the most common industrial process used to obtain enantiomerically pure compounds is still via resolution of racemic mixtures. This is despite the major disadvantage that only a maximum of 50% product yield can be obtained. It is not surprising that DKR, which solves the problem of the limitation in yield, has attracted an increasing amount of interest from both the industrial and the academic perspective. This book provides an up-date on the principle methods employed to obtain dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) by either enzymatic or non-enzymatic methods. It also illustrates the diversity of useful chiral products that can be obtained through this powerful concept. Divided into three sections, the book deals successively with non-enzymatic methods, enzymatic methods, and the use of transition metals and enzymes in tandem.
