Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. —Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV) This verse represents the ultimate guarantee of hope and help. When we are on the verge of something new—a job, relationship, family, or neighborhood—we may easily go from excitement to anxiety. In these times, having firm assurance that all will be well can change everything. It can give us peace of mind and alleviate all our worries. In Divine Guarantee, author Dr Chinyere Almona shares her own experiences of venturing into the unknown at different stages in life and desiring certainty that even if something goes wrong, things will still turn out well. The words of encouragement in the verse above assured her that God would be with her and helped her know that there are no guarantees except those given by the God who made the heavens and the earth. If you are in the middle of major transitions or significant uncertainties, you too can find hope and assurance as you contemplate something new, difficult, or problematic. This personal testimony and study seeks to guide you toward a better understanding of the assurance and peace of mind that comes only from God.

  • Author : Timothy Gloege
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2015-04-27
  • ISBN : 1469621029
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Guaranteed Pure written by Timothy Gloege and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-04-27 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American evangelicalism has long walked hand in hand with modern consumer capitalism. Timothy Gloege shows us why, through an engaging story about God and big business at the Moody Bible Institute. Founded in Chicago by shoe-salesman-turned-revivalist Dwight Lyman Moody in 1889, the institute became a center of fundamentalism under the guidance of the innovative promoter and president of Quaker Oats, Henry Crowell. Gloege explores the framework for understanding humanity shared by these business and evangelical leaders, whose perspectives clearly differed from those underlying modern scientific theories. At the core of their "corporate evangelical" framework was a modern individualism understood primarily in terms of economic relations. Conservative evangelicalism and modern business grew symbiotically, transforming the ways that Americans worshipped, worked, and consumed. Gilded Age evangelicals initially understood themselves primarily as new "Christian workers--employees of God guided by their divine contract, the Bible. But when these ideas were put to revolutionary ends by Populists, corporate evangelicals reimagined themselves as savvy religious consumers and reformulated their beliefs. Their consumer-oriented "orthodoxy" displaced traditional creeds and undermined denominational authority, forever altering the American religious landscape. Guaranteed pure of both liberal theology and Populist excesses, this was a new form of old-time religion not simply compatible with modern consumer capitalism but uniquely dependent on it.

Download or read book Divine Self Human Self written by Chakravarthi Ram-Prasad and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Best Book in Hindu-Christian Studies Prize (2013/2014) from the Society for Hindu-Christian Studies. The Gita is a central text in Hindu traditions, and commentaries on it express a range of philosophical-theological positions. Two of the most significant commentaries are by Sankara, the founder of the Advaita or Non-Dualist system of Vedic thought and by Ramanuja, the founder of the Visistadvaita or Qualified Non-Dualist system. Their commentaries offer rich resources for the conceptualization and understanding of divine reality, the human self, being, the relationship between God and human, and the moral psychology of action and devotion. This book approaches their commentaries through a study of the interaction between the abstract atman (self) and the richer conception of the human person. While closely reading the Sanskrit commentaries, Ram-Prasad develops reconstructions of each philosophical-theological system, drawing relevant and illuminating comparisons with contemporary Christian theology and Western philosophy.

Book The Human and the Divine in History

Download or read book The Human and the Divine in History written by Paul V. Niskanen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Human and the Divine in History investigates the possibility that the author of Daniel knew and drew upon the Histories of Herodotus. Daniel uses and develops Herodotean concepts such as the succession of world empires, dynastic dreams, and the focus on both human and divine cauration in explaining historical events. A comparative reading of these two texts illuminates Daniel's theology of history, showing it to be neither as exclusively eschatological nor as sectarian as is often supposed. Rather, it is specifically the end of exile-understood as foreign domination-that Daniel envisions for the entire Jewish people.

Book The Sovereignty of God Debate

Download or read book The Sovereignty of God Debate written by D. Stephen Long and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is God sovereign with respect to creation? Does creation affect God? Does God suffer or change because of creation? If so, how is this related to Christology? Why have these questions been so controversial in evangelical theology, even costing some people their jobs? This book is a collection of lectures given to the Forum for Evangelical Theology at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Six theologians answer the questions above from a variety of perspectives. They draw on resources including the church fathers, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, Jurgen Moltmann, process theology, and open theism. In the process of answering the question, does God suffer? each theologian also illustrates how responding to this subject requires an examination of other crucial evangelical issues, such as how we read Scripture and what it means to proclaim that God is love. Although the writers answer these questions in a variety of ways, the hope is that engaging in this conversation together can help evangelicals and all Christians to speak more faithfully of our sovereign God.
