Download or read book Divine Consolations written by Samuel Richardson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-10-04 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ crucified, the sum and substance of the Gospel; the Priesthood of Christ, and the sufficiency of his Sacrifice to save, is the main thing I contend for against the Papists, who say, Christ's sacrifice is not sufficient without their sacrifice. Charity saves, says one. Without good works, no salvation, says another. A third says that Christ's sacrifice is not sufficient for our Salvation without believing, that believing saves, and that without believing, we cannot be saved. Ye see, they all urge a necessity of something for salvation besides Christ's Sacrifice, without which something, they say, we cannot be saved; so that they deny the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice to save, and so deny that Christ does save. For those he saves, he saves by his sacrifice. Also if Christ and something else saves us, Christ saves us not. For he is no Saviour if he be but a part of a Saviour; therefore, in adding something to Christ's sacrifice, they deny the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice.

Download or read book The Consolations of God written by Phillips Brooks and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compelling sermons by one of the nineteenth century's finest preachers Best known today as the author of the Christmas carol "O Little Town of Bethlehem, " Phillips Brooks (1835-1893) has been called the greatest American preacher of the nineteenth century. Yet his magnificent sermons, which brought standing-room-only crowds to Trinity Church in Boston, have long been out of print and hard to find. But, thanks to Ellen Wilbur, the illuminating messages delivered by Brooks are once again available in this collection of twelve of his best sermons, allowing modern readers to be touched by the man whom Wilbur describes as "a poet of a speaker, " Upon first immersing herself in his long lost sermons, she felt deeply that his "loftiness of mind and heart shone through his words in such a way that made it easy to imagine rooms of hushed, uplifted people pinned on him, as much astonished by the man as by his teachings." The Consolations of God will appeal to a wide range of readers wanting to deepen their spiritual lives.

Meister Eckhart (1260–1327), a German Dominican whose preaching was immensely popular in his own time, was one of the greatest medieval European mystics, and his writings helped build the foundation of the Western mystical tradition. This important introduction to his writing and preaching contains rich selections from his sermons, treatises, and sayings, as well as Table Talk, the records of his informal advice to his spiritual children. This book was previously published under the title Meister Eckhart, from Whom God Hid Nothing: Sermons, Writings, and Sayings. The Shambhala Pocket Library is a collection of short, portable teachings from notable figures across religious traditions and classic texts. The covers in this series are rendered by Colorado artist Robert Spellman. The books in this collection distill the wisdom and heart of the work Shambhala Publications has published over 50 years into a compact format that is collectible, reader-friendly, and applicable to everyday life.
Download or read book Paul and Seneca within the Ancient Consolation Tradition written by Alex Muir and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, Alex W. Muir shows how Paul and Seneca were significant contributors to an ancient philosophical and rhetorical tradition of consolation. Each writer's consolatory career is surveyed in turn through close readings of key primary texts: chiefly Seneca's three literary consolations and 'Epistles'; and Paul's letters, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Corinthians, and Philippians. A final comparative dialogue highlights the pair's adaptations and innovations within this tradition.
