Book Proceedings of the National Association for Multicultural Education

Download or read book Proceedings of the National Association for Multicultural Education written by Carl A. Grant and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) held its 7th Annual Conference in 1997 with a theme of Daring to Educate for Equity and Excellence: A Multicultural and Bilingual Mandate for the 21st Century. The conference generated scholarship in the form of keynote speeches and conference papers and stimulating discussions among the membership. The conference's southwest location of Albuquerque, New Mexico provided an excellent back drop to discuss the interconnections between multicultural education and bilingual education, as well as provide an opportunity for proponents of both of these important ideas to engage in useful and important discussions. The essays comprised in this book capture much of the written record of the conference. They convey ideas, beliefs, and research findings that were presented at the formal sessions at the conference. Just as with NAME's previous proceedings, it is expected that these proceedings will become not only a written record of the conference but a "live curriculum" to help pre/K through college educators to prepare themselves and those they teach for the 21st century.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Interdisciplinary Research Seminar, developed by Professor Nicolas A. Nyiri of the Political Science Department, was initiated three years ago. The purpose has been to encourage and foster interdisciplinary research papers and colloquia which are now being published under the editorship of Professor N.A. Nyiri and Dr. Rod Preece. Contributors have been drawn from several centres and it is planned to expand the sources of papers in the future. The work that has been accomplished has served to bring scholars from diverse fields together and to encourage others to share in the exploration and expansion of critical thinking in a number of areas. It is expected that the publication of the first volume will open the way to an ever-widening interest in this core area of a university's life: critical thinking and dissemination of the knowledge gained. - From the foreword by Dr. Neale Tayler, Vice-President Academic, Wilfrid Laurier University

Book Unity in Diversity

Download or read book Unity in Diversity written by Toivo Miljan and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which should have priority: the whole or the individual? The two major aspects of organized entities are represented in this volume under the headings Unity and Diversity: wholes, such as nations, states, and international systems, which integrate human beings; and parts, such as individual persons and groups acting independently. Under Unity, Wolfgang Koerner analyzes the usefulness of general systems theory in thinking about society; Toivo Miljan proposes a new way to conceptualize the world political system; Erik Wang considers the United Nations' definition of aggression and use of force; Hubert Campfens evaluates the contemporary welfare state; and Karl Aun attempts to clarify the concept of nation-state. Under the heading of Diversity, Robert Alexander asks what kinds of rights children should have; Loren Calder gives an account of the impact of Hegelianism on Yuri Samarin, a nineteenth-century Russian Slavophil; Rod Preece reviews John A. Macdonald's contribution to political philosophy; Charles C. Brodeur argues for an approach to knowledge which would integrate the rational and the intuitive; and Josephine Naidoo examines the position of South Asian women in Canadian society.

Book Embracing Diversity in the Learning Sciences

Download or read book Embracing Diversity in the Learning Sciences written by Yasmin B. Kafai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 1414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a decade has passed since the First International Conference of the Learning Sciences (ICLS) was held at Northwestern University in 1991. The conference has now become an established place for researchers to gather. The 2004 meeting is the first under the official sponsorship of the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS). The theme of this conference is "Embracing Diversity in the Learning Sciences." As a field, the learning sciences have always drawn from a diverse set of disciplines to study learning in an array of settings. Psychology, cognitive science, anthropology, and artificial intelligence have all contributed to the development of methodologies to study learning in schools, museums, and organizations. As the field grows, however, it increasingly recognizes the challenges to studying and changing learning environments across levels in complex social systems. This demands attention to new kinds of diversity in who, what, and how we study; and to the issues raised to develop coherent accounts of how learning occurs. Ranging from schools to families, and across all levels of formal schooling from pre-school through higher education, this ideology can be supported in a multitude of social contexts. The papers in these conference proceedings respond to the call.

Book The Development of a Diversity Education Seminar Series for Graduate Students

Download or read book The Development of a Diversity Education Seminar Series for Graduate Students written by April K. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As our nation grows and changes, so does our patient population. Minorities accounted for over 30% of our nation's population in 2015 and are projected to account for over 50% of our national population in 2060 (Vespa et al., 2018). Cultural competency training and diversity education is imperative for healthcare professionals because the cultural intelligence and attitudes of healthcare providers have been identified as factors that contribute to healthcare disparities (Hall et al., 2015). Hence, graduate programs must strive to matriculate culturally competent students who will provide equally excellent healthcare services to patients of all cultural backgrounds. This study aims to develop a diversity education seminar series that could be implemented in a range of graduate school programs for rising health care professionals and evaluate its benefit in Towson University's Doctor of Audiology program. Information regarding cultural perceptions was gathered from a range of graduate programs at Towson University via a Culture Perspectives Questionnaire. Doctor of Audiology graduate students and faculty were required to attend three separate seminars focusing on general and topic specific diversity education. A program evaluation was completed following each seminar, to gather participant feedback. Findings from our survey revealed that the respondents of the Cultural Perspectives Questionnaire were majority white women who most frequently made contact with white heterosexual women and men both on and off Towson University's campus. This study confirmed that the racial and gender make-up of our sample was consistent with the overall demographics of Towson University's College of Health Professions and the demographics of professional healthcare fields across America. The cumulative results of the Cultural Perspectives Questionnaire and subsequent diversity seminar program evaluations suggest a strong desire for diversity in graduate programs and focused diversity education, thus indicating support for continued implementation of diversity seminars. The overall findings of this study illustrate the need for diversity education to illuminate graduate students' awareness of their lack of cultural intelligence and support their professional growth. Continued research on this topic is required to evaluate this model and other forms of diversity training to assess their effectiveness in educating graduate students and ultimately healthcare professionals.
