It is a vision of transformation that results from the encounter with the 'other' and leads to lasting culture change and the flourishing of all"--Page 4 of cover.

Book Humanizing LIS Education and Practice

Download or read book Humanizing LIS Education and Practice written by Keren Dali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanizing LIS Education and Practice: Diversity by Design demonstrates that diversity concerns are relevant to all and need to be approached in a systematic way. Developing the Diversity by Design concept articulated by Dali and Caidi in 2017, the book promotes the notion of the diversity mindset. Grouped into three parts, the chapters within this volume have been written by an international team of seasoned academics and practitioners who make diversity integral to their professional and scholarly activities. Building on the Diversity by Design approach, the book presents case studies with practice models for two primary audiences: LIS educators and LIS practitioners. Chapters cover a range of issues, including, but not limited to, academic promotion and tenure; the decolonization of LIS education; engaging Indigenous and multicultural communities; librarians’ professional development in diversity and social justice; and the decolonization of library access practices and policies. As a collection, the book illustrates a systems-thinking approach to fostering diversity and inclusion in LIS, integrating it by design into the LIS curriculum and professional practice. Calling on individuals, organizations, policymakers, and LIS educators to make diversity integral to their daily activities and curriculum, Humanizing LIS Education and Practice: Diversity by Design will be of interest to anyone engaged in research and professional practice in Library and Information Science.

Book Beyond Discrimination

Download or read book Beyond Discrimination written by Fredrick C. Harris and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2013-06-30 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly a half century after the civil rights movement, racial inequality remains a defining feature of American life. Along a wide range of social and economic dimensions, African Americans consistently lag behind whites. This troubling divide has persisted even as many of the obvious barriers to equality, such as state-sanctioned segregation and overt racial hostility, have markedly declined. How then can we explain the stubborn persistence of racial inequality? In Beyond Discrimination: Racial Inequality in a Post-Racist Era, a diverse group of scholars provides a more precise understanding of when and how racial inequality can occur without its most common antecedents, prejudice and discrimination. Beyond Discrimination focuses on the often hidden political, economic and historical mechanisms that now sustain the black-white divide in America. The first set of chapters examines the historical legacies that have shaped contemporary race relations. Desmond King reviews the civil rights movement to pinpoint why racial inequality became an especially salient issue in American politics. He argues that while the civil rights protests led the federal government to enforce certain political rights, such as the right to vote, addressing racial inequities in housing, education, and income never became a national priority. The volume then considers the impact of racial attitudes in American society and institutions. Phillip Goff outlines promising new collaborations between police departments and social scientists that will improve the measurement of racial bias in policing. The book finally focuses on the structural processes that perpetuate racial inequality. Devin Fergus discusses an obscure set of tax and insurance policies that, without being overtly racially drawn, penalizes residents of minority neighborhoods and imposes an economic handicap on poor blacks and Latinos. Naa Oyo Kwate shows how apparently neutral and apolitical market forces concentrate fast food and alcohol advertising in minority urban neighborhoods to the detriment of the health of the community. As it addresses the most pressing arenas of racial inequality, from education and employment to criminal justice and health, Beyond Discrimination exposes the unequal consequences of the ordinary workings of American society. It offers promising pathways for future research on the growing complexity of race relations in the United States.

Book excerpt: Meet the new Black friend you never had As a Black organizer, community, business, and organization leaders often ask: "How do I get diversity in my group?" The thing is, the work is real, but it's a minefield out there. And even progressive leaders can still, perhaps unknowingly, be racist and uphold oppressive systems. Book Diversity of Perspectives

  • Author : Eileen Taylor
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-08-13
  • ISBN : 9781792456473
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Diversity of Perspectives written by Eileen Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-13 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regardless of your current level in any organization (traditional student, adult learner, intern, entry-level, employee, manager, or leader), you will soon experience a changing workforce that will become majority minority as early as the year 2030 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Dr. Eileen Taylor offers a unique model of mindfulness and inclusion as a pathway toward workforce unity. Diversity of Perspectives is a purpose driven student engagement tool. The model helps students reflect upon personal diversity brought to class on day one; learn about the differences and similarities of others; and make informed decisions about how personal behavioral choices in an increasingly diverse world contribute to intended results. At the very beginning of the model, students are introduced to a reflection lens for learning. The lens will provide students with the necessary foundation needed to guide them through the model. As students continue to progress through the text, they are encouraged to keep it in mind during discussions, assignments, and presentations. Diversity of Perspectives also becomes common language used by students when connecting theory to practical application. Students learn that the ability to communicate with others who have individual values, assumptions, beliefs, and expectations that may or may not be different from their own is crucial in the ever-growing global market. The vision and mission of an organization is not different for some employees. It is the intended purpose for which all are employed. Diversity exists in the workplace beyond federal protected classifications of race, gender, ethnicity, color of skin, religion, sexual orientation, disability, etc. Individual values, assumptions, beliefs, and expectations also exist and contribute to organizational results. The ability to effectively communicate that diversity is personal, global, and a behavioral choice that directly connects to delivering products and services to customers is added value to any organization.
