Book excerpt: Bamboo occupies an unparalleled position in the plant kingdom in terms of its distribution, diversity and uses in the tropics and subtropics. In addition to featuring prominently in the lives of rural communities, particularly in Asia, it continues to find new applications in such wide ranging areas as paper and rayon manufacture; construction; architecture; engineering; handicrafts; food and medicine. Within Asia, India is second only to China in terms of the quantities and varieties of bamboo species found in the country. However, as in many other countries, information on this subject is generally inadequate and inaccessible. Contradictory reports on various aspects of bamboos, especially relating to taxonomic and phytogeographic observations, further add to the confusion regarding classification. There is thus an urgent need for a review of the current literature and a compilation of information on the various species of bamboo, including their synonyms. This compilation by K.K. Seethalakshmi and M.S. Muktesh Kumar, scientists specializing in plant physiology and taxonomy respectively at the Kerala Forest Research Institute, seeks to fulfil this need. Based primarily on a literature survey, it provides a comprehensive and holistic account of 128 bamboo species belonging to 18 genera occurring in India. By synthesizing and consolidating the work done so far on each of the covered species, it is expected to illuminate current information gaps and to provide a solid foundation for further work in this area.

Book Framework for assessing ecosystem services from bamboo forests

Download or read book Framework for assessing ecosystem services from bamboo forests written by Paudyal, K. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bamboo is well known for supporting people’s livelihoods, and is widely used in landscape restoration programs while providing a wide range of ecosystem goods and services. However, while marketable goods from bamboo such as shoots for food and timber for construction, flooring and furniture are well known, the ecosystem services (ES) supply from bamboo is not, due to limited research. To date, very few studies highlight the role of bamboo forests in providing multiple ES that have local and global value. Lack of an appropriate framework and tools is considered a barrier to assessing the ES from bamboo forests. Therefore, this study attempts to develop an easy-to-apply framework to assess ES from bamboo and test them in three countries in Asia and Africa – Nepal, Indonesia and Ethiopia – in order to understand the relative supply capacity of the key ES from bamboo forests. The literature related to ES and assessment frameworks was reviewed so as to design an appropriate assessment framework for bamboo forests. This study offers an easy-to-apply framework that can be used widely. The research shows that the ES supply capacity of bamboo forests is higher than for industrial planted forest while it is lower than for the natural forests in all case study sites. The ES assessment from bamboo forests poses several challenges: defining and classifying ES, limited data, and complex relationships in trade-offs and synergies of ES that should be kept in mind while designing the framework.

Book The Bamboos of the World

Download or read book The Bamboos of the World written by D. Ohrnberger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-01-29 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bamboos constitute one of a few select categories of plants which are taxonomically related, very rich in species and of vital economic and ecological importance. Since the early 20th century the accepted number of species of bamboos, world wide, has tripled. However, until now information was scattered through numerous, often not easily available publications. The Bamboos of the World, is the first comprehensive (taxonomic as well as horticultural) reference work that provides basic information on bamboos world wide, whether they are wild or cultivated, well-known or rather unknown. The work, based on bamboo literature, facilitates access to further data by citation and a comprehensive bibliography. Among the main data included are botanical names with synonyms, and geographical distribution of genera and species, varieties with their distinctive characters, common bamboo names, plant introductions to the West, plant size and uses. The distribution of genera is mapped. The Bamboos of the World presents a wealth of essential information in an accessible and structured manner. It gives the opportunity to check under what names, and where, relevant information on any bamboo can be found. For the researcher with management and development interests it provides a convenient means of basing bamboo resource on a sound understanding of generic and species relationships, with names that appear in earlier literature put into context. The work should prove to be invaluable for those interested in the morphology, taxonomy, distribution and cultivation of bamboos. It should support botanical, forestry, horticultural and ecological research, training and resource management.

Book Bamboo Flowering and Rodent Outbreaks

Download or read book Bamboo Flowering and Rodent Outbreaks written by Shakunthala Sridhara and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apart from economic reasons related to non-availability of bamboo for several years after gregarious flowering and famine resulting from exhausted food crops and stored food by an increased population of rodents, the phenomenon of gregarious flowering in bamboo is a highly debated ecological event starting from the possible theories of evolution of semelpary to response of seed predators to sudden availability of huge quantities of seed. The gregarious flowering of bamboo has fascinated the plant evolutionary ecologists as to causo-mechanisms of the phenomenon, the reasons for variable inter mast periods, reasons for parental death, advantages and disadvantages of masting, and animal ecologists regarding vertebrate response to masting, community dynamics of seed predators during and after masting, eruption of rodent populations and rodent borne diseases consequent to bamboo masting. The literature available is either enormous as in mast seeding or scanty about the inter-mast periods. No clear picture has emerged on any of the above aspects due to factors like variety of flowering in several species, inadequate historical documentation and insufficient time in the life of a scientist to verify the findings. Study of flowering mechanisms and ecological interactions require many decades of planned observation at permanent location by interdisciplinary working groups of plant evolutionary ecologists, animal population ecologists, community ecologists and modelers. In the absence of such an effort at present, this book is an attempt to explain the different theories put forward by specialists on some of the aspects of gregarious flowering of bamboos and community response to it especially those of vertebrates (birds and rodents). It is the first ever attempt of consolidating plant ecology and animal response, both of which affect drastically the livelihood of people depending on bambooContentsCHAPTER - 1 BAMBOO, THE WONDER GRASS" Introduction" Classification, Species Diversity and Distribution in India" Types of Bamboo and Bamboo Growth" Uses of Bamboo" Medicinal Properties" ConclusionsCHAPTER - 2 GREGARIOUS FLOWERING OF BAMBOO" Introduction" Evolution of Mast seeding Semelpary" Distribution of Masting Bamboos" Mechanism of Floral Induction" Reproductive Biology of Bamboos" Pollination in Bamboos" Inter-mast Periods" Reasons for Parental Death" ConclusionsCHAPTER 3 MECHANISMS OF SEED MASTING" Introduction" Evolutionary Ecology of Masting" Advantages and Disadvantages of Masting" Mechanisms of Seed Masting" ConclusionsCHAPTER 4 VERTEBRATE PREDATORS OF MAST SEEDS" Introduction" Vertebrate Predators of Masting (a) Birds (b) Mammals (c) Other Vertebrates" Vertebrate Response to Masting" ConclusionsCHAPTER 5 SEED MASTING AND COMMUNITY DYNAMICS OF TERRESTRIAL VERTEBRATES" Introduction" Community Response to Masting" ConclusionsCHAPTER 6 RODENT RESPONSE TO BAMBOO FLOWERING AND SEED MASTING" Introduction" Bamboo Flowering and Rodent Outbreaks" Masting of Trees other than Bamboo and Rodent Outbreaks" Seed Dispersal and Scatter Hoarding" Effects of Rodents on Tree Regeneration" ConclusionsCHAPTER 7 ECOLOGICAL DISTURBANCES AND RODENT BORNE DISEASES" Introduction" Rodents in Natural Disasters and Diseases" Factors Influencing Rodent Outbreaks" Management of Field Rodents during Rodent Outbreaks" Rodent Control during Population Outbreaks" ConclusionsCHAPTER 8 SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACT OF GREGARIOUS FLOWERING OF BAMBOO IN NORTH-EAST INDIA" Introduction" Gregarious Flowering of Bamboo in North East India" Rodents of North East India" Rodent Outbreaks and Famine-A Historical Perspective" Action initiated to Mitigate problems of Bamboo Flowering of 2005-2007" Current Status of Rodent problem in North East Hill states" Action for Rodent Control-Present and Future" ConclusionsREFERENCESAUTHOR INDEXSUBJECT INDEX

Book Bamboo Plantation and Utilization Handbook

Download or read book Bamboo Plantation and Utilization Handbook written by H. Panda and published by ASIA PACIFIC BUSINESS PRESS Inc.. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bamboo is an important non wood forest product. In India, bamboo, which is traditionally considered the Poor man wood, and labelled as Green Gold is being considered a major export item by the centre for the global market. Bamboo is perfectly suited to agro forestry as a woody grass. Bamboo has been exploited from natural stands from time immemorial. Bamboo is increasingly being cultivated like other agricultural crops, that is, in professionally managed plantations. The growth of industries utilizing bamboo requires the sustainable cultivation and management of bamboo resources. India is blessed with very rich bamboo resources. Bamboo can play an important role in raising forest cover and a major role in stabilization of the environmental problems. The annual yield in tonnes/ha depends on the environment as well as the species. It is estimated that almost 25% of the biomass in the tropics and 20% in the subtropics, come from bamboo. The cultivation of bamboo as a wood substitute helps to offset depletion of the rain forest. Its rapid growth ensures an effective reconstruction of damaged eco systems. Bamboo is one of many sustainable non wood resources that can generate income for a large forest dependent rural population and it needs to take further steps to realize its full potential. In India, the North East has the largest stock and diversity of bamboos. Though India has the largest area under bamboo, the yield per hectare is very low compared to other countries. Bamboo plantation rising should be encouraged & promoted due to their high value, productivity, uniformity of crop, choice of species linked to peoples’ need and industrial need. Bamboo forest constitutes about 13% of the total forest area of the country. About 50% of bamboo produced in India grows in North Eastern region and West Bengal. India has the second largest bamboo reserves in the world after China. This book basically deals with bamboos in India, the bamboo plant harvesting, cultivating, silviculture and management, collection of material and preparation of cuttings treatment for root induction in cuttings, preparation of nursery and planting nursery management transplanting, pattern of biomass allocation in growing bambusa bamboos, biochemical characteristics of plantation bamboo leaf (bambusa bambos) with reference to organic productivity, economic analysis, bamboo plantation, problems and prospects, need for bamboo plantation, consumption pattern of bamboos in India, working and finishing qualities of bamboo, bamboos for structural use, pipe water supply system and drainage, bamboo furniture weaving industry etc. This book provides a complete detail on Bamboo plantation and its utilization. This book contains chapters like types of bamboo in India, taxonomy, cultivation, harvesting, growth management, bamboo utilization, Bamboo products and many more. This book will be very helpful to all its readers, environmentalists, agronomists, entrepreneurs, industrialists, or anyone with a special interest in bamboo cultivation.
