Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his teaching ministry Jesus told several stories, often witty, which drew upon the circumstances and situations of his day. He used this method of teaching as a means of making a point, whether favourable or harsh, that his hearers would understand and recognise in their application to them. This book adapts, updates, and converts into whimsical verse a number of these stories, while also raising some new issues for today’s generation. It is not intended to be a substitute for reading the Gospels and other New Testament books, but is intended to direct and encourage readers to look and think more deeply into Jesus’ original words as recorded in Scripture and how they might apply to them.

Book excerpt: The suggestion is here that soul-making is the true vocation of the poet. Poetry is personal speech on universal experience, and in this selection of poems the individual approach to the sacred is emphasized over any adherence to orthodoxy or doctrine. In this anthology, spiritual traditions of East and West are filtered through the personal vision of sixteen contemporary Canadian poets. These poets are joined together not by faith and similar belief, but in each following their own path to truth. Their poems and stories and editor Sussan McCaslin's insightful introduction illuminated fundamental themes of spiritual life that resonated in each of us.

Book Syntax and Style in Chaucer s Poetry

Download or read book Syntax and Style in Chaucer s Poetry written by Gregory H. Roscow and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1981 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give an outline of structural features of Chaucer's poetic syntax that are relevant to the study of style, and to define some general tendencies in his construction of sentences. What emerges is a fondness on Chaucer's part for discontinuity in the order of words and phrases and for certain forms of expression which have a wider application t: han their modern counterparts. In order that Chaucer's usage may be seen in its historical context, comparative material is drawn from the writings of his contemporaries - Langland, Gower, and the Gawain-poet - and from the body of early English rhyming romances now taken to represent an influent: ial native poetic tradition. I In an introductory chapter Dr Roscow questions the familiar description of Chaucer's syntax as colloquial, and argues for attention to a wider range of literary functions in studying the relationship between syntax and style in nedieval poetry

Book Classical and Nonclassical Logics

Download or read book Classical and Nonclassical Logics written by Eric Schechter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So-called classical logic--the logic developed in the early twentieth century by Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, and others--is computationally the simplest of the major logics, and it is adequate for the needs of most mathematicians. But it is just one of the many kinds of reasoning in everyday thought. Consequently, when presented by itself--as in most introductory texts on logic--it seems arbitrary and unnatural to students new to the subject. In Classical and Nonclassical Logics, Eric Schechter introduces classical logic alongside constructive, relevant, comparative, and other nonclassical logics. Such logics have been investigated for decades in research journals and advanced books, but this is the first textbook to make this subject accessible to beginners. While presenting an assortment of logics separately, it also conveys the deeper ideas (such as derivations and soundness) that apply to all logics. The book leads up to proofs of the Disjunction Property of constructive logic and completeness for several logics. The book begins with brief introductions to informal set theory and general topology, and avoids advanced algebra; thus it is self-contained and suitable for readers with little background in mathematics. It is intended primarily for undergraduate students with no previous experience of formal logic, but advanced students as well as researchers will also profit from this book.
