Book Structural Features of Distributive Trades and Their Impact on Prices in the Euro Area

Download or read book Structural Features of Distributive Trades and Their Impact on Prices in the Euro Area written by European System of Central Banks. Monetary Policy Committee and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distributive trades sector, which is primarily accounted for by wholesale and retail trade, is not only economically important in its own right, but also relevant to monetary policy. Ultimately, it is retailers who set the actual prices of most consumer goods. They are the main interface between producers of consumer goods and consumers, with around half of private consumption accounted for by retail trade. The "value added" of this intermediation service can be substantial, as this accounts for, on average, about 25% of consumer prices. The purpose of this report is to analyse the structural features of the distributive trades sector and the developments within it, as well as how these may infl uence prices and price dynamics. Several aspects are relevant.^From a monetary policy point of view, increasing the degree of competition in the distributive trades sector may have effects not only on price levels, but also on price dynamics, via a reduction in mark-ups, an increase in price fl exibility and a greater and more rapid pass-through of changes in costs to prices. Structural developments, such as the increasing market penetration of hard discounters, online trade and private label brands, the role of buying groups and the relative bargaining power between producers and retailers are of great importance to consumers and price determination. In addition, these may have implications for the measurement of consumer prices and inflation.^More generally, the distributive trades sector plays an important role in determining cross-country differentials in productivity growth, both within and outside Europe: the sector has accounted for over one-third of the widening gap in aggregate productivity between the euro area and the United States since the mid-1990s. A specifi c contribution of this report is the use of a wide range of data sources, including a unique dataset on the location of over 100,000 individual grocery stores across most of the euro area, to investigate how to better measure the degree of competition and concentration in this sector, and to compare sector developments from a national, regional and local perspective.

Book The Rules of Competition in the European Economic Community

Download or read book The Rules of Competition in the European Economic Community written by R. Graupner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the European Economic Community and the gradual achievement of a Common Market in connection with this Community raises not only economic but numerous legal problems as weIl. In fact, the Treaty of Rome and the various regulations, directives and de cisions enacted for its implementation are bringing into being a new legal system which has a great influence not only within the frontiers of the Community but also on all European States which are in eco nomic contact with the Community and indeed on the entire world. This applies particularly to the provisions on the laws of competition laid down by the Treaty and its implementing regulations. These provisions must be known and taken into consideration not only by Common Market enterprises but also by large firms outside the Community. The very comprehensive literature on the European Economic Community has therefore laid special stress on this subject. The large number of commentaries published in the various languages of the Community on the Rules of Competition indicates the great interest taken not only by the commercial world but also by the world of jurisprudence.

Download or read book Interpreting Convergence in the European Union written by C. Paraskevopoulos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-06-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Convergence in the European Union introduces the idea of collective action as a prerequisite for achieving convergence and cohesion in the European Union. Institutional networks and social capital play a crucial role in influencing actors' preferences and shaping institutional interactions through the process of political exchange and socialization. Although the main focus of the book is on policymaking processes and governance structures in EU regional policy, its core theoretical hypotheses and conclusion are drawn from empirical research into the response of Greek regions to the challenges of Europeanization. This framework is applicable to almost all areas of EU public policymaking.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1996. The authors define retail structure in a retail distribution context as a snapshot of the state of play in the competitive struggle between retail companies and businesses, each of which is seeking to not only survive but to grow. The studies in this volume were first published in The Service Industries Journal. Taken as a whole they serve two purposes: first, they introduce the concept and process of retail structure taken from the viewpoint of a continuing competitive struggle for market supremacy; and second, they serve as an introduction to the wider study of retail development.

Book Competition and Markets

Download or read book Competition and Markets written by John Dawsond and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990-06-14 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses some of the major issues associated with competition in theory and practice. Among other essays, Paul Samuelson considers the theoretical underpinning of privatising state assets. Mary Gregory ponders on the possibility of cooperation rather than competition between employer and worker and whether incomes policies are likely to feature on a medium-term political agenda. Christopher Moir claims that food retail markets are not as competitive as is often claimed and that large food retailers may enjoy monopoly profits. Aubrey Silbertson very cogently sets out the orthodox case for removing trade protection on the industrialised world's clothing industries.
