Book Distribution of Pollock Pollachius Virens Eggs and Larvae on the Scotial Shelf Eastern Gulf of Maine Bay of Fundy and Eastern Georges Bank

Download or read book Distribution of Pollock Pollachius Virens Eggs and Larvae on the Scotial Shelf Eastern Gulf of Maine Bay of Fundy and Eastern Georges Bank written by Alexander Reimund Hanke and published by St. Andrews, N.B. : Department of Fisheries and Oceans. This book was released on 2001 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The temporal and spatial distribution of sampling and the sampling protocols used for pollock during the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans Larval Herring (UlP), Scotian Shelf Ichthyoplankton (SSIP) and Fisheries Ecology Programs {FEP) are summarized. In addition, the spatial distributions of Stage I, II, III and IV pollock eggs and I to 7 mm and > 7 mm pollock larvae are presented for each survey and are aggregated over all programs and time to form general and bimonthly composites. To avoid standardizing the sampling effort for differences among sampling protocols and gear types used in the survey programs, the distributions of pollock early life history stages were determined using a presence/absence criterion rather than the actual abundance. The samples selected from the LHP database were those collected using a 61cm Bongo outfitted with either 505- or 333-μm mesh and towed in a saw tooth fashion. The FEP is represented by Bongo samples taken with a 333-μm mesh and a double oblique tow only and the SSIP is also represented by Bongo samples collected with a 471-μm mesh and an old stepped oblique tow

Book EAISSNA an Electronic Atlas of Ichthyoplankton on the Scotian Shelf of North America

Download or read book EAISSNA an Electronic Atlas of Ichthyoplankton on the Scotian Shelf of North America written by Patrick L. Stewart and published by Dartmouth, N.S. : Fisheries and Oceans. This book was released on 2003 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EAISSNA database contains information on location and time of spawning, and abundance and distribution of eggs and larvae of marine fish on the Scotian Shelf of North America. 197 scientific publications from 1919 to 2001 were reviewed and original analysis conducted on datasets from Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Scotian Shelf Ichthyoplankton Program (SSIP) and Fisheries Ecology Program (FEP) for 1976-82 from data archives, providing infonnation on 107 taxa of fish and invertebrates. The database is intended for use in environmental assessment and management activities associated with offshore hydrocarbon development and production and ocean management. Supporting maps and database tables, and possible enhancements and developments including standards based on World Wide Web (WWW) access are also described. The database was developed for and with funding from the Canadian Environmental Studies Research Funds (ESRF), an industry-government body that promotes research in support of hydrocarbon development of Canada's frontier lands. Compact Disks (CD) (report, lists, maps and data) can be obtained from the authors

Book Fish Reproductive Biology

Download or read book Fish Reproductive Biology written by Tore Jakobsen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The economic importance of fishes and their societal and culturalrelevance provide powerful incentives for large-scale, sustainedstudies of their dynamics" —the Editors The overall goal of this book is to give a picture of thepresent use of information on fish reproductive biology inassessment and management and its potential for improvingmanagement of these resources. Compiled by an international team of authors, each an expert intheir field, this exceptional volume is divided into three majorsections: Biology, population dynamics, and recruitment Information critical to successful assessment andmanagement Incorporation of reproductive biology and recruitmentconsiderations into management advice and strategies Including over 100 diagrams, this book is essential reading forall fisheries scientists. Libraries in universities and researchestablishments where this subject is studied and taught should havecopies on their shelves. "As one author put it: the goal is to facilitate a 'dialoguebetween assessment scientists and biologists.' Readers of anyspecialty should accept this challenge, and this book is anexcellent resource to aid them." —Fisheries, March 2010

Book Atlantic Cod

Download or read book Atlantic Cod written by George A. Rose and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive handbook, covering all aspects of the Atlantic cod including the biology, ecology, life histories, behaviour, commercial exploitation and conservation Not only is Atlantic cod one of the most valuable food fish in the world’s oceans, it is an important component of North Atlantic ecosystems and has been subject to much research into its biology, ecology and exploitation. After hundreds of years of exploitation, overfishing in the last half of the 20th Century caused many stocks to collapse, most famously the Northern cod stock off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Since then, most cod stocks have been better researched and managed, but remain in a variety of states, from fully recovered to continued decline. This book, written by world experts, describes that research and management, and the importance of cod and its fisheries on North Atlantic cultures and economies, with impacts well beyond the range of the species. Atlantic Cod: Bio-Ecology of the Fish offers insightful chapter coverage of cod nomenclature, taxonomy, phylogeny and morphology; physiology and ecophysiology; reproduction and spawning behavior; early life history and pre-recruitment processes; migrations, movements and stock identity; feeding, growth and energetics; the place of cod in the ecosystem; the exploitation of cod through history and present day commercial fisheries and precautionary management for sustainable fisheries; impacts of climate change on cod biology and ecology; and the future of the species and its fisheries. Discusses the major commercial importance of Atlantic cod through history Provides a comprehensive treatment of the bio-ecology of the most researched and highly exploited fully marine species Examines how the decline (and recovery) of cod stocks is of great political and scientific interest An essential purchase for marine fisheries scientists Atlantic Cod: Bio-Ecology of the Fish is a vital book for all fisheries scientists, managers and fish biologists.
