A special focal point is set on oral language and its functions. The analysis should help to answer the questions: - Can weblogs help to minimize the distance between journalists and readers? - Can weblogs assist in attracting a new kind of readership? - Can weblogs assist in raising readership loyalty? All results can also be transferred from journalism to public relations and marketing: - Can weblogs help to provide you closer insight into your customer needs? - Can weblogs assist in attracting new target groups? - Can weblogs assist in raising customer loyalty? The study is set up according to the following sequence: Firstly, a general approach to weblogs is presented, describing their structure, development and implementation. Secondly, differences between the spoken and written mode are outlined and several models depicting the continuum relationship between both are introduced. After the explanation of the significance and function of orality in written electronic and news discourse, the concept of oral models in the press is introduce. In a last step, a sample analysis of several articles from one journalistic weblog is conducted, one online and one traditional newspaper, applying a linguistic framework based on the theoretical works presented before. With this examination, it is shown that the language used in journalistic weblogs contains more characteristics from the variety of spoken language than the languages of online and traditional print newspapers. From the results, potential effects are derived, e.g. on the practical fields of application or on the composition of the readership. Until now, only 38% of all adult US internet users and 37% of the Germans know what a weblog or short blog is. But nevertheless, weblogs have already attracted great attention from around the globe during the past nine years since their first appearance. First, a definition of anaphors that applies to linguistics as well as information technology is given. On this foundation, all types of anaphors and their characteristics for English are outlined. To examine how frequent each type of anaphor is, a corpus of different hypertexts has been established and analysed with regard to anaphors. The most frequent type are non-finite clause anaphors - a type which has never been investigated so far. Therefore, the potential of non-finite clause anaphors are further explored with respect to anaphora resolution. After presenting the fundamentals of computational anaphora resolution and its application in text retrieval, rules for resolving non-finite clause anaphors are established. Therefore, this book shows that a truly interdisciplinary approach can achieve results which would not have been possible otherwise. This collection of 14 articles on text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC), is the first to bring empirical evidence from a variety of disciplinary perspectives to bear on questions raised by the new medium. The first section, linguistic perspectives, addresses the question of how CMC compares with speaking and writing, and describes its unique structural characteristics. Section two, on social and ethical perspectives, explores conflicts between the interests of groups and those of individual users, including issues of online sex and sexism. In the third section, cross-cultural perspectives, the advantages and risks of using CMC to communicate across cultures are examined in three studies involving users in East Asia, Mexico, and students of ethnically diverse backgrounds in remedial writing classes in the United States. The final section deals with the effects of CMC on group interaction: in a women's studies mailing list, a hierarchically-organized workplace, and a public protest on the Internet against corporate interests.

Issues of national security are of the utmost sensitivity, linked to a country's foreign, security and defence policy posture, and any decisions are closely related to matters of sovereignty and democratic accountability. For this reason, a security union is closely connected to the existence of a political union. The creation of an independent Scottish state would see an end to the current arrangements for ensuring Scotland's security, as Scotland, including Police Scotland, would no longer be part of the UK's national security infrastructure and capabilities. In practical terms this means that the present level of strategic and operational communication and co-ordination that occurs everyday across the UK, with Scotland playing a key role within it - whether concerned with counter-terrorism, fighting serious and organised crime or protecting against cyber threats - would end
