Book excerpt: A novel of Havana. With passion and eloquence, master craftsman Abilio Estevez brings to life the mysterious, broken down city of Havana on the eve of the new millennium. Victorio, a lonely, middle-aged gay man, awakes to the news that the ancient palace where he rents a tiny apartment is scheduled to be demolished, leaving him homeless. Wandering the streets in search of a new place to call his own, he meets two unusual people who are destined to change his life: Salma, a young prostitute, and Don Fuco, an eccentric old clown who brings both of them to live in his own refuge, an abandoned theater. In a city riddled with conflict and no longer tolerant of outcasts, the pair find solace in one another and in the dilapidated theater that shelters them, and a renewed joy in their collective abilities to entertain people with their clowning. But when the harsh realities of life intrude on their self-contained utopia, Victorio and Salma are forced back out into the streets, where they struggle to keep beauty and laughter alive. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. Book Palaces and Power in the Americas

Download or read book Palaces and Power in the Americas written by Jessica Joyce Christie and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient American palaces still captivate those who stand before them. Even in their fallen and ruined condition, the palaces project such power that, according to the editors of this new collection, it must have been deliberately drawn into their formal designs, spatial layouts, and choice of locations. Such messages separated palaces from other elite architecture and reinforced the power and privilege of those residing in them. Indeed, as Christie and Sarro write, "the relation between political power and architecture is a pervasive and intriguing theme in the Americas." Given the variety of cultures, time periods, and geographical locations examined within, the editors of this book have grouped the articles into four sections. The first looks at palaces in cultures where they have not previously been identified, including the Huaca of Moche Site, the Wari of Peru, and Chaco Canyon in the U.S. Southwest. The second section discusses palaces as "stage sets" that express power, such as those found among the Maya, among the Coast Salish of the Pacific Northwest, and at El Tajín on the Mexican Gulf Coast. The third part of the volume presents cases in which differences in elite residences imply differences in social status, with examples from Pasado de la Amada, the Valley of Oaxaca, Teotihuacan, and the Aztecs. The final section compares architectural strategies between cultures; the models here are Farfán, Peru, under both the Chimú and the Inka, and the separate states of the Maya and the Inka. Such scope, and the quality of the scholarship, make Palaces and Power in the Americas a must-have work on the subject.

Book Roads of Excess Palaces of Wisdom

Download or read book Roads of Excess Palaces of Wisdom written by Jeffrey J. Kripal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-12 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Blake once wrote that "The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom." Inspired by these poetic terms, Jeffrey J. Kripal reveals how the works of scholars of mysticism are often rooted in their own mystical experiences, "roads of excess," which can both lead to important insights into these scholars' works and point us to our own "palaces of wisdom." In his new book, Kripal addresses the twentieth-century study of mysticism as a kind of mystical tradition in its own right, with its own unique histories, discourses, sociological dynamics, and rhetorics of secrecy. Fluidly combining autobiography and biography with scholarly exploration, Kripal takes us on a tour of comparative mystical thought by examining the lives and works of five major historians of mysticism—Evelyn Underhill, Louis Massignon, R. C. Zaehner, Agehananda Bharati, and Elliot Wolfson—as well as relating his own mystical experiences. The result, Kripal finds, is seven "palaces of wisdom": the religious power of excess, the necessity of distance in the study of mysticism, the relationship between the mystical and art, the dilemmas of male subjectivity and modern heterosexuality, a call for ethical criticism, the paradox of the insider-outsider problem in the study of religion, and the magical power of texts and their interpretation. An original and penetrating analysis of modern scholarship and scholars of mysticism, Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom is also a persuasive demonstration of the way this scholarly activity is itself a mystical phenomenon.

Book excerpt: The Sleeping King is the start of a new fantasy series by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Cindy Dees. Dees has won a Golden Heart Award, two RITAs for Category Suspense and Adventure and has also twice snared RT's Series Romantic Suspense of the Year. She is a great storyteller, and the adventures in her more than fifty novels are often inspired by her own life as the youngest female pilot in Air Force history. But as much as she love romances, Cindy's other passion has been fantasy gaming. For almost twenty years she's been the story content creator for Dragon Crest, one of the original live action role-playing games. Now, with the blessing and input of Dragon Crest founder Bill Flippin, she has created a trilogoy based on the game. The Sleeping King is the first in an epic fantasy series featuring the best of the genre: near immortal imperial overlords, a prophecy of a sleeping elven king who's said to be the savior of the races . . . and two young people who are set on a path to save the day. The Sleeping King Trilogy #1 The Sleeping King #2 The Dreaming Hunt #3 The Wandering War At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book People s Palaces

Download or read book People s Palaces written by Christoph Grafe and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Author Christoph Grafe investigates an architectonic typology, the cultural edifice, which must often take on the role of national identity and culture in the realisation of a democratic society. This book takes two specific projects as its subject: London's South Bank and the Kulturhus in Stockholm. The buildings were chosen as a result of their architectural meaning, and by the fact that they appeared in two countries that fulfilled a leading role in the development of the post-war 'welfare state'; in Europe. Besides an in-depth analysis of the two cities within the context of their wider national and cultural development, the book includes a photo essay by German photographer Heidi Specker" --
