Book The Third Wave Other Stories

Download or read book The Third Wave Other Stories written by Milton Queah and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of Short Stories (some prize winning) written over a period of some thirty years presenting a wide ranging perspective of life. They portray experiences of individuals who in the course of their daily humdrum existence come upon momentous circumstances which jar their smug self complacency and change their entire outlook on life. A common strain which runs through all the stories is the utter vulnerability of the individual when pitted against the overpowering clatter of the machinery called life. There is a massive gush of apathetic mechanical activity out there which can anytime douse the tenuous flicker of ones own emotions. The Characters are drawn from various strata of society be they a daily wage earner, a smug sophomore, a confused young couple, a sexual pervert, a beleagured single woman, a nave teenage lover or a fling-seeking damsel well past her prime. Thrown into the cauldron of life each frantically struggle to keep their ends up. Some just succumb, while most finally resign themselves to the nebulous drift of existence, as undecipherable as the inexorable cycle of birth and death of stars.

This, of course, might apply to one or two of the others, but none of these was with Miss Hudson...FROM THE BOOKS.

Book A Widow s Tale and Other Stories

Download or read book A Widow s Tale and Other Stories written by Mrs. Margaret Oliphant and published by WILLIAM BLACKWOOD AND SONS. This book was released on with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Widow's Tale and Other Stories These things were being turned over in her mind by Miss Bampton, while she sat looking out upon the lawn where everything looked so fresh and cool under the trees. She was busy with her usual knitting, but this did not in any way interfere with the acuteness of her senses, or the course of her thoughts. Though May and she were spoken of as if on the same level, as the Miss Bamptons, this lady was twenty years older than her sister, and had discharged for half of that time the functions of mother to that heedless little girl. May had made Julia old, indeed, when she had no right to be considered old. When the mother died she had been a handsome quiet young woman, thirty indeed, which is considered, though quite falsely, an unromantic age yet quite capable of being taken for twenty-eight, or even twenty-five, and with admirers and prospects of her own. After her mourning was over she had become Miss Bampton, the feminine head of the house, managing everything, receiving the few guests her father cared to see, who were almost all contemporaries of his own, as if she were as old as any of them—and had moved up to a totally different level of life. Such a transformation is not unusual in a widower's house. Miss Bampton took the position of her father's wife rather than of his daughter, and no one thought it strange. If she sacrificed any feelings of her own in doing so, no one found it out. She was a mother to May; she had found her position, it seemed, taken possession of her place in the world, at the head of a house which was her own house, though it was not her husband's but her father's. It was generally supposed that the position suited her admirably, and that she had never wished for any other: which indeed I agree was very probably the case, though in such matters no one can ever be confident. It was thus that she happened to be so absorbed in May, so watchful of this (she thought) undesirable interposition of Mr Fitzroy, of the partial withdrawal of Bertie Harcourt, and of many things of equal, or rather equally little, moment to the general world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where more women are joining the work force, where ever more are stepping out from their secluded and cloistered world and can be physically seen in larger numbers, this collection seeks to explore how male writers in Urdu view and consequently present or represent the women of their world. In her Introduction, Rakhshanda Jalil traces the history of ‘writings on women’ by both male and female writers — from the doyens of Urdu literature to contemporary writers dealing with contemporary issues, setting the mood for the stories in this collection and giving the reader a sampler of what to expect in the ensuing pages. The collection includes themes which are timeless as well as topics that are an outcome of the times we live in. Starting with two of the four pillars of the Urdu short story – Rajinder Singh Bedi and Krishan Chandar – who can be credited with introducing a realistic portrayal of women in Urdu fiction, the stories in this volume offer multiple ways of ‘seeing’ women.

Book Chioniso and Other Stories

Download or read book Chioniso and Other Stories written by Shimmer Chinodya and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new collection, Chioniso and other stories, we are once again reminded how Shimmer Chinodya mines his experience for nuggets. Playing with his doppelganger, Godfrey, he looks back on life in Harare, and in Zimbabwe, over the last decade, exploring it from a familial perspective. How does a father cope with a rebellious daughter or a wife he perceives as wayward? How does one mediate traditional gender roles? What to do when status in the form of a car undermines the stability of a marriage? How does one manage a friendship with a new farmer? What moral compromises are demanded by new wealth and political cronyism? And what is the effect of religion on our lives? Have we become more caring and compassionate, or does piety provide a mask, to disguise greed and ambition, and justify a contempt for the poor? This collection of stories will make you laugh, but it will also challenge you to reconsider what it means to be Zimbabwean in the 21st century.

It's about the strong, adventurous women I've had the luxury to know. They kick ass and take names. Bake cupcakes and build packs. I asked my personal scribe to jot down their stories, and the result is enough drama to keep even the orneriest yahoos busy reading instead of lighting their tails on fire. Why not grab yourself a copy and become part of our pack? Book The Shadow on the Blind and Other Stories

Download or read book The Shadow on the Blind and Other Stories written by Louisa Baldwin and published by Wordsworth Editions. This book was released on 2007 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Victorians had an insatiable appetite for the macabre and sensational: stories of murder and suspense, ghosts, the supernatural and the inexplicable were the stuff of life to them. The two writers in this volume well represent the last decade of the nineteenth century, and are of interest in themselves as well as for their contribution to the chilling of the Victorian spine. Mrs. Alfred Baldwin attempted as a child to contact her dead sister through a seance, and took to writing when stricken by a mysterious illness six weeks after marriage. She was also the mother of the Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin. Lettice Galbraith is herself no less mysterious than the stories she wrote. She appeared on the literary scene in 1893, published a novel and two collections of stories in that year, a further story ("The Blue Room") in 1897, and then nothing more. Readers of 'The Empty Picture Frame', 'The Case of Sir Nigel Otterburne', 'The Trainer's Ghost' and 'The Seance Room' will recognise the Victorian spirit at its finest.
