During the five-year NATO Special Programme on AET, many advanced study institutes and research workshops focused on building bridges between researchers in and users of educational technology. The organizing committee of the final capstone workshop which took place in September 1993 also chose to focus on this theme. Three position papers, written by members of the AET advisory committee, provided the background and platform for the two-day workshop that was designed to provide guidelines for future AET research and implementation projects. Nicolas Balacheff kicked off the workshop with a philosophical review of the research issues and future research agendas. Herman Bouma and his colleagues at the Institute for Perception Research discussed implementation issues and problems of technology transfer from research laboratories to educational product development.

The book consisted of 49 chapters, which correspond to the four major areas that are covered during the conference, namely Big Data & Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, E-Learning, Internet of Things, Information System and Natural Language Processing. Every year BDIoT attracted researchers from all over the world, and this year was not an exception – the authors received 98 submissions from 7 countries. More importantly, there were participants from many countries, which indicates that the conference is truly gaining more and more international recognition as it brought together a vast number of specialists who represented the aforementioned fields and share information about their newest projects. Since the authors strived to make the conference presentations and proceedings of the highest quality possible, the authors only accepted papers that presented the results of various investigations directed to the discovery of new scientific knowledge in the area of Big Data, IoT and their applications. All the papers were reviewed and selected by the Program Committee, which comprised 96 reviewers from over 58 academic institutions. As usual, each submission was reviewed following a double process by at least two reviewers. When necessary, some of the papers were reviewed by three or four reviewers. Authors’ deepest thanks and appreciation go to all the reviewers for devoting their precious time to produce truly through reviews and feedback to the authors.

Book excerpt: Design is a conceptive activity which is usually presented as a sensible, sequential process and action. This book claims that design cannot be reduced to the rational, effective planning and organization that most models (such as design thinking) present. The author suggests another type of rationality which is based on what the humanities call aesthetics, writing, composition, and style: a rationality based in imaginary elaboration and coherence. The chapters, therefore, demonstrate that design practice is about creating not only functional tools, but planes of reflections that challenge norms. To support this claim, this book analyzes research programs, art works, and design projects that produced new information and communication technologies (ICT). This is detailed using examples in each chapter. From these examples, two types of conclusions are derived: a first level considers the lessons that we can draw from these examples in terms of design practice while the second level starts a theoretical discussion based on these analyses of use cases. The goal is to develop an understanding of conception in its different forms. This book brings the use of these neglected methods to the foreground as a way to explicate the design process. Taking into consideration the humanities within design contributes to the discussion on pluridisciplinarity. The book posits that design as a historical and situated activity is a truly multidisciplinary endeavor that bridges the gap between engineering sciences and the humanities.

The media have dramatically increased their capacity to exercise their symbolic force over other fields of cultural production, by partly structuring those intrinsic rules, values, and practices that organize, for example, the political system or the academic world from the inside. On the other hand, the media are intertwined environments subjected to the influence of other cultural, economic, and political forces, which, in turn, reveal themselves to be capable of framing reality through the media themselves. Particularly focusing on the topic of the economic crisis, the various chapters of this edited volume highlight how the relationship between the media and other forces capable of pervasively exercising their power appears to be, paradoxically, as strict as it is opaque. Social media and smart mobile technologies have increasingly affected the modalities whereby other institutions and organizations reflect on themselves and develop their worldviews. At the same time, however, politics and economics experts and strategists have all learned how to ‘exploit’ this potential for their own purposes. Detecting the opacity that characterizes this form of ‘exploitation’ is the first step in the acknowledgment of this phenomenon.
