Download or read book Reeds Marine Distance Tables 16th edition written by Miranda Delmar-Morgan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reeds Marine Distance Tables are the perfect ready-reckoner for captains, navigators and owners of merchant and cruise ships large and small wanting a quick and accurate distance reference between all the regularly used commercial ports around the world. They are also of increasing value to the superyacht fleet. The book is divided into key 'market areas', and includes a pull-out map for area identification and easy see-at-a-glance port reference. Traffic Separation Schemes are calculated into the tables whilst the distance to any port not included can easily be determined by making an approximation from the next closest port. Useful tables of major 'turning points' around the world (such as Cape Finisterre, Cape Horn and the Dover Straits), Transatlantic distances, world time zones, and time and speed conversion tables are also included. This edition has been improved and expanded. Emerging ports around the world have also been added to reflect modern trends and developments in shipping movements and expansions. Reeds Marine Distance Tables are an invaluable reference for ship owners, operators, brokers, navigators and superyacht skippers. Using this one reference, anyone can calculate the shortest or most economical distances between all the major ports in the world. 'A first class reference' Nautical Magazine 'Clear and simple support for anyone wanting to calculate the shortest or most economical distance between major ports' Telegraph

Download or read book Characteristics Timing and Hazard Potential of Liquefaction induced Landsliding in the Farmington Siding Landslide Complex Davis County Utah written by Michael D. Hylland and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1998 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Farmington Siding landslide complex is in Davis County, Utah, about 25 kilometers north of Salt Lake City. The landslide complex covers approximately 19.5 square kilometers and is one of 13 late Pleistocene/Holocene features along the Wasatch Front mapped by previous investigators as possible liquefaction-induced lateral spreads. The Farmington Siding landslide complex is in a largely rural area, but state and interstate highways, railroads, petroleum and natural-gas pipelines, and other lifelines cross the complex. Continued population growth along the Wasatch Front increases the likelihood of urban development within and adjacent to the landslide complex. Development along the Wasatch Front has proceeded with little consideration of hazards associated with liquefaction-induced landslides. Slope-failure mechanisms, extent of internal deformation, and timing of landslide events are poorly understood, and these factors must be evaluated to enable local governments to effectively plan for development and implement hazard-reduction strategies as needed. The purpose of this study is to assess the hazard associated with future liquefaction-induced landsliding within and adjacent to the Farmington Siding landslide complex by evaluating slope-failure modes and extent of internal deformation within the complex, inferring the geologic and hydrologic conditions under which landsliding occurred, determining the timing of landsliding, and evaluating the relative likelihood of various earthquake source zones to trigger liquefaction-induced landsliding. We chose the Farmington Siding landslide complex for this study because of the distinctiveness of geomorphic features on the northern part of the complex and the presence of landslide deposits that are clearly of different ages. Furthermore, because much of the area is rural, appropriate land-use planning measures can still be implemented to protect future development.

Download or read book Evolutionary Genetics of Invertebrate Behavior written by Milton Davis Huettel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the preface to Sir Vincent B. Wigglesworth's classic 1939 book on insect physiology he asserted that insects provide an ideal medium in which to study all the problems of physiology. A strong case can be made as well for the use of insects as significant systems for the study of behavior and genetics. Contributions to genetics through decades of research on Drosophila species have made this small fly the most important metazoan in genetics research. At the same time, population and behavioral research on insects and other invertebrates have provid ed new perspectives that can be combined with the genetics approach. Through such in tegrated research we are able to identify evolutionary genetics of behavior as a highly signifi cant emerging area of interest. These perspectives are ably described by Dr. Guy Bush in the introductory chapter of this book. During March 21-24, 1983, many of the world's leading scientists in invertebrate behavioral genetics were drawn together in Gainesville, Florida, for a colloquium entitled "Evolutionary Genetics of Invertebrate Behavior." This conference was sponsored jointly by the Department of Entomology and Nematology, University of Florida, chaired by Dr. Daniel Shankland, and the Insect Attractants, Behavior and Basic Biology Research Laboratory, U.S. Department of Agriculture, directed then by Dr. Derrell Chambers.
