Book Plastic Deformation of Minerals and Rocks

Download or read book Plastic Deformation of Minerals and Rocks written by Shun-ichiro Karato and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 51 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry highlights some of the frontiers in the study of plastic deformation of minerals and rocks. This book reviews large-strain shear deformation and deformation experiments under ultrahigh pressures; the issues of deformation of crustal rocks and the upper mantle; the interplay of partial melting and deformation; the new results of ultrahigh pressure deformation of deep mantle minerals; the stability of deformation under deep mantle conditions with special reference to phase transformations and their relationship to the origin of intermediate depth and deep-focus earthquakes; a detailed description of fracture mechanisms of ice; of experimental and theoretical studies on seismic wave attenuation; the relationship between crystal preferred orientation and macroscopic anisotropy; recent progress in poly-crystal plasticity to model the development of anisotropic fabrics both at the microscopic and macroscopic scale; a thorough review of seismic anisotropy of the upper mantle covering the vast regions of geodynamic interests and the theoretical aspects of shear localization. All chapters contain extensive reference lists to guide readers to the more specialized literature. This volume was written for a workshop, in December 2002 in Emeryville, California.

Book Deformation of Ceramic Materials II

Download or read book Deformation of Ceramic Materials II written by Richard E. Tressler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume "Deformation of Ceramic Materials II" constitutes the proceedings of an international symposium held at The Pennsyl vania State University, University Park, PA on July 20, 21, and 22, 1983. It includes studies of semiconductors and minerals which are closely related to ceramic materials. The initial conference on this topic was held in 1974 at Penn State and the proceedings were published in the volume entitled "Deformation of Ceramic Materials." This conference emphasized the deformation behavior of crystals and po1ycrysta11ine and polyphase ceramics with internationally recognized authorities as keynote lecturers on the major subtopics. Several papers dealing with cavity nucleation and creep crack growth represent a major new research thrust in ceramics since the first conference. This collection of papers represents the state-of-the art of our understanding of the plastic deformation behavior of ceramics and the crystals of which they are composed. We are grateful for the suggestions of our International Advisory Committee .in recommending experts in their respective countries to participate. We are particularly grateful that the organizers of the previous Dislocation-Point Defect Interaction Workshops agreed to participate in the Penn State Symposium as an alternative at the suggestion of Prof. A. H. Heuer. We acknowledge the financial support of the National Science Foundation for this conference.

Book Diffusion in Solids

Download or read book Diffusion in Solids written by Paul G. Shewmon and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition is an updated and revised version of the original text. It offers detailed descriptions of the methods available to predict the occurrence of diffusion in alloys subjected to various processes. Major topic areas covered include diffusion equations, atomic theory of diffusion, diffusion in dilute alloys, diffusion in a concentration gradient, diffusion in non-metals, high diffusivity paths, and thermo- and electro-transport. This is an excellent textbook for use in metallurgical and materials science and engineering education.

Book Flow and Fracture of Rocks

Download or read book Flow and Fracture of Rocks written by Hugh Corey Heard and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1972 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 16 (The Griggs Volume). David Tressel Griggs was born October 6, 1911, in Columbus, Ohio. His parents were Robert Fiske and Laura Amelia Tressel Griggs. His father was a widely known professor of botany and a leading ecologist and environmental conservationist at a time when these viewpoints were less familiar than they are today. David was an undergraduate at Ohio State University in 1930 when he participated in a National Geographic Society expedition, led by his father, to the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. This Alaskan experience and the encouragement he received from a gifted and enthusiastic teacher, Professor Edmund M. Spieker, led him to choose for his life work the application of physics to the problems of the earth. After a year of graduate studies in geology at Ohio State, David moved on in 1933 to Harvard, where a new progTam of high-pressure studies devoted to geophysical problems had just been initiated under the inspired guidance of Percy W. Bridgman, pre-eminent leader in the experimental exploration of the physics of very high pressures and in the philosophical analysis of the logical processes of scientific thinking.
