Book Design and Fabrication of Dispersion engineered Thin film LiNbO3 Waveguide for Broadband Optical Parametric Oscillator

Download or read book Design and Fabrication of Dispersion engineered Thin film LiNbO3 Waveguide for Broadband Optical Parametric Oscillator written by Yumeng Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical frequency comb (OFC) generation has captured strong interest for various applications. Researchers are currently working on applications of combs in optical atomic clocks to telecommunications, studies of ultrafast dynamics and quantum computing, spectroscopy and secure optical communications systems. An on-chip optical frequency comb generator would be attractive because of its light weight and low power consumption, and further applications in cutting-edge equipment such as satellites. In the meanwhile, in pursuit of accurate measurement in a wide frequency range, for example in broadband dual-comb Fourier transform spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography, the large overall bandwidth of the OFC is desired. Lithium niobate offers many attractive properties for the broadband OFC including wide transparency window, high refractive index, and high second order susceptibilities. Thin-film lithium niobate waveguides have been used in a platform of compact photonic integrated circuits recently for a second harmonic generation because of its high nonlinear property. However, due to the large waveguide dispersion and group velocity mismatch, previous optical parametric oscillators using lithium niobate achieve limited performance. This problem can be tackled by dispersion engineering which can flatten the waveguide dispersion by carefully choosing the material and designing the waveguide structure. In this thesis, we design a synchronously pumped degenerate optical parametric oscillation (SPDOPO) with dispersion-engineered thin-LiNbO3-on-insulator waveguides to generate 2/3 octave OFC from 1291nm to 1937nm wavelength. A silicon nitride strip-loaded on thin-film lithium niobate waveguide is designed and simulated and achieved lower than 60 ps/nm/km dispersion in 2/3 octave wavelength range. The OPO simulation with this waveguide design shows 61% conversion efficiency. The design of 90-degree turn and couplers in OPO resonator is simulated and discussed. Periodically poled lithium niobate, as the nonlinear medium with quasi-phase-matching in OPO, is fabricated and characterized, and shows some indications of periodic lithium niobate domain inversion.

Book Engineering and Utilizing Nonlinear and Electro optic Properties of Silicon and Silicon nitride Waveguides

Download or read book Engineering and Utilizing Nonlinear and Electro optic Properties of Silicon and Silicon nitride Waveguides written by Rajat Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon is the primary candidate for the advancement of integrated photonics due to its prevalence within the electronics industry. One of the material's most notable shortcomings, however, is its centrosymmetry, which causes it to lack a second-order nonlinear susceptibility, disallowing electro-optic modulation based on the Pockels effect [1]. To circumvent this complication, research efforts involving electro-optic modulation in silicon waveguides have instead exploited the free-carrier plasma dispersion effect, in which a change in the concentration of holes and electrons, generated by an electrical current, leads to deviations in both the real and imaginary parts of a semiconductor's index of refraction [2-4]. Additionally, some work over the past decade has been devoted to exploring the strain-induced second-order nonlinear susceptibility in silicon [5-10]. By deforming silicon's diamond lattice in an asymmetric way, it is possible to remove the material's centrosymmetry, thereby generating a second-order nonlinearity within the material [5]. In recent works, values as high as 330 pm/V have been reported for the [chi](2) coefficient in strained silicon waveguides [6]. Recently, however, it has been found that strained silicon's electro-optic effect is roughly quadratic in nature, rather than linear, as would be expected for the Pockels effect [7]. Furthermore, many demonstrations of strained silicon's nonlinear properties have incorrectly assumed that the electric field, used to control silicon's index of refraction, penetrates strongly into the semiconductor waveguide itself [6-10], and this is known to have led to inaccurately reported nonlinear coefficients. Instead, the observed behavior in strained silicon waveguides is now thought to be due to the capacitively-induced free-carrier effect, which has already been used to demonstrate high-bandwidth modulation [11-16]. Similarly, the wavemixing observed in the literature for strained silicon waveguides has been attributed largely to electric field-induced second-harmonic generation [17].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear photonics is the name given to the use of nonlinear optical devices for the generation, communication, processing, or analysis of information. This book is a progress report on research into practical applications of such devices. At present, modulation, switching, routing, decision-making, and detection in photonic systems are all done with electronics and linear optoelectronic devices. However, this may soon change, as nonlinear optical devices, e.g. picosecond samplers and switches, begin to complement optoelectonic devices. The authors succinctly summarize past accomplishments in this field and point to hopes for the future, making this an ideal book for newcomers or seasoned researchers wanting to design and perfect nonlinear optical devices and to identify applications in photonic systems.

Book Programmable Integrated Photonics

Download or read book Programmable Integrated Photonics written by José Capmany and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-21 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive, up-to-date and self-contained introduction to the emergent field of Programmable Integrated Photonics (PIP). It covers both theoretical and practical aspects, ranging from basic technologies and the building of photonic component blocks, to designalternatives and principles of complex programmable photonic circuits, their limiting factors, techniques for characterization and performance monitoring/control, and their salient applications both in the classical as well as in the quantum information fields. The book concentrates and focusesmainly on the distinctive features of programmable photonics, as compared to more traditional ASPIC approaches. After some years during which the Application Specific Photonic Integrated Circuit (ASPIC) paradigm completely dominated the field of integrated optics, there has been an increasing interest in PIP. The rising interest in PIP is justified by the surge in a number of emerging applications that callfor true flexibility and reconfigurability, as well as low-cost, compact, and low-power consuming devices.Programmable Integrated Photonics is a new paradigm that aims at designing common integrated optical hardware configurations, which by suitable programming, can implement a variety of functionalities. These in turn can be exploited as basic operations in many application fields. Programmabilityenables, by means of external control signals, both chip reconfiguration for multifunction operation, as well as chip stabilization against non-ideal operations due to fluctuations in environmental conditions and fabrication errors. Programming also allows for the activation of parts of the chip, which are not essential for the implementation of a given functionality, but can be of help in reducing noise levels through the diversion of undesired reflections.
