Book Dismantling Russia s Nonpayments System

Download or read book Dismantling Russia s Nonpayments System written by Brian Pinto and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One question preoccupies many scholars and practitioners: How can economic growth in the Russian Federation be reinvigorated? This report contributes to the current debate.Nonpayments in Russia evolved into a complex, inter-linked system over the latter half of the 1990s, becoming one of the most critical issues facing policymakers. This paper analyzes this system, including its origins, its evolution, the factors that now perpetuate it, and its costs, and identifies a minimum set of economic reforms needed to dismantle it. The paper also proposes answers to key questions about nonpayments, including: • How has its course been influenced by government policy at the federal and subnational levels? • What are the links with macroeconomic policy? • What is the role of the energy sector, and how has the system affected the way businesses operate? • What are the implications for economic growth? • How indeed, as part of Russia's transition to a monetized, market economy, did the nonpayments system come to exert a stranglehold on virtually every aspect of the economy? This report will be of interest to policymakers and economists interested in transition economies.

Book Dismantling Racism One Relationship at a Time

Download or read book Dismantling Racism One Relationship at a Time written by Tina M. Harris and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dismantling Racism: One Relationship at a Time inspires and challenges readers to think critically about racism and its impact on themselves and others in complex and nuanced ways. With a commitment to an inverted approach to racism, Tina M. Harris’ trickle-down theory illustrates the interconnection between racist ideologies and interracial relationships. The example of interracial romantic relationships as an illustration of how societal attitudes dictate interracial relationships shows how trickle-down theory brings to the surface a person’s and society’s true attitudes about race. The theory further demonstrates how all of our interpersonal connections are a testament of racial socialization processes and how we manage our interracial interactions and relationships. Celebrating the power of interracial communication to dismantle forms of systemic oppression, the book provides essential vocabulary for both societal misconceptions and transformative practices of interpersonal conversation. The book culminates in the racial intentionality roadmap (RaIR), a self-reflexive guide to immediately and repeatedly identifying ways to help eradicate racism in all the spaces we occupy. Ultimately, Dismantling Racism challenges readers to develop authentic, organic interracial relationships that translate into changes in systems that perpetuate racial division.

Book Dismantling Educational Sexism through Teacher Education

Download or read book Dismantling Educational Sexism through Teacher Education written by Kimberly J. Pfeifer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the development and impacts of anti-sexism professional development (PD) workshops for preservice teachers. Designed to help teacher candidates recognize gender inequity and think more deeply about their role as anti-sexist educators, Dismantling Educational Sexism through Teacher Education explores how workshops can respond directly to issues manifesting in US schooling such as misrepresentation, androcentric pedagogy, and sex(ual/ist) harassment using an intersectional approach. By documenting participants’ learning, the text offers valuable insight into how teacher candidates view their role in combatting sexism and illustrates how an anti-sexism curriculum can positively impact on educators’ beliefs, discourses, and teaching practices. This volume will be a valuable resource for researchers and scholars involved in teacher education and issues of gender equity more broadly, as well as teacher educators seeking a theoretical framework for anti-sexism trainings.

The decision makers involved thus need help in comparing and assessing alternative options for the decommissioning of their nuclear submarine fleets. The present volume offers such assistance, with its discussions of the risks associated with long-term water storage of the boats, radioactive and chemical contamination, spent fuel and waste management, and handling and recycling reactor compartments.

Book Dismantling Tyranny

Download or read book Dismantling Tyranny written by Ilan Berman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a totalitarian group seizes power, one of the first institutions it creates is a secret political police. Since the birth of modern totalitarianism, in country after country, secret political police have been the predominant instruments of power, used to consolidate power, neutralize the opposition, and erect a one-party state. Yet, when these same totalitarian regimes have liberalized or collapsed, the secret political police have often managed to survive and even remain relevant. Dismantling Tyranny: Transitioning Beyond Totalitarian Regimes provides a groundbreaking exploration of this survival tendency in seven formerly communist regimes in the former Soviet Union and Latin America - and the lessons these transformations hold for future democratic revolutions. But Dismantling Tyranny is also much more: it is a guidebook designed to empower, inform, and guide future transitions toward democracy for those political leaders with the initiative, and courage, to embark upon such a visionary path. Published in cooperation with the American Foreign Policy Council.

Book Dismantling Defunct Ships in the Uk Eighteenth Report of Session 2003 2004 Report Together with Formal Minutes Oral and Written Evidence

Download or read book Dismantling Defunct Ships in the Uk Eighteenth Report of Session 2003 2004 Report Together with Formal Minutes Oral and Written Evidence written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2004 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that, worldwide, about 700 large commercial vessels have to be scrapped each year, as they reach the end of their working life. Much of the material they are made from can be recycled, but many ships also contain hazardous materials, such as asbestos, PCBs and waste oils, which need to be disposed of safely. The Committee's report considers how defunct ships are dismantled and why most are currently dismantled in developing countries, mostly in Asia; health and safety protection for workers, and environmental protection standards; the international regulatory framework, including legislation such as the Basel Convention and EC regulations, IMO guidelines and enforcement problems; the principles of responsible ship recycling; the Government's approach to ship recycling and a UK ship recycling industry. Findings include that the Government has an important role to play in ensuring this issue receives sufficient international priority, particularly during the UK's forthcoming EU Presidency and chairmanship of the G8; as well at home in helping persuade UK-based shipowners to arrange for their vessels to be disposed of responsibly. As a first step, it should ensure that all naval and other publicly-owned vessels are dismantled to the highest health, safety and environmental standards.

Book Dismantling Solidarity

Download or read book Dismantling Solidarity written by Michael A. McCarthy and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why has old-age security become less solidaristic and increasingly tied to risky capitalist markets? Drawing on rich archival data that covers more than fifty years of American history, Michael A. McCarthy argues that the critical driver was policymakers' reactions to capitalist crises and their political imperative to promote capitalist growth.Pension development has followed three paths of marketization in America since the New Deal, each distinct but converging: occupational pension plans were adopted as an alternative to real increases in Social Security benefits after World War II, private pension assets were then financialized and invested into the stock market, and, since the 1970s, traditional pension plans have come to be replaced with riskier 401(k) retirement plans. Comparing each episode of change, Dismantling Solidarity mounts a forceful challenge to common understandings of America’s private pension system and offers an alternative political economy of the welfare state. McCarthy weaves together a theoretical framework that helps to explain pension marketization with structural mechanisms that push policymakers to intervene to promote capitalist growth and avoid capitalist crises and contingent historical factors that both drive them to intervene in the particular ways they do and shape how their interventions bear on welfare change. By emphasizing the capitalist context in which policymaking occurs, McCarthy turns our attention to the structural factors that drive policy change. Dismantling Solidarity is both theoretically and historically detailed and superbly argued, urging the reader to reconsider how capitalism itself constrains policymaking. It will be of interest to sociologists, political scientists, historians, and those curious about the relationship between capitalism and democracy.
