This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach With Special Reference to Treatment The attention of the reader is drawn to pathologic conditions due to ptosis of the abdominal viscera, as the author has obtained good results in the treatment of gastroptosis by employing the principle of mechanical support. Achylia Gastrica is considered under the head of Chronic Gastritis because the latter involves the diminution and eventual cessation of gastric secretion. The author wishes to make acknowledgment of his indebtedness to the many American practitioners who have contributed so greatly to the advancement of gastroenterology, and to the foreign writers whose scientific achievements have received approval nowhere more cordially than in this country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgery of the Stomach: A Handbook of Diagnosis and Treatment IN the following pages I have attempted to give a practical account of The Diagnosis and Treatment of those Affections of the Stomach which are amenable to Direct Surgical Inter ference. 1 The significance of the information to be gained from test-meals is considered in some detail, because I believe that such investigations are of great value in the diagnosis of gastric disease. It appears to me strange, that whereas at the present time, bacteriological and pathological examinations are used so extensively in the diagnosis of disease, chemical methods are so rarely made use of in practice, and dealt with so briefly in text-books. The stomach-tube should be part of the armamentarium of every practitioner. It is not essential that he should perform all the quantitative analyses to which I refer, but I venture to think that he would be repaid amply, if he carried out the ordinary qualitative tests, and the estimation of the total acidity of the gastric contents. The practitioner, be he consultant or otherwise, who, without the aid which such investigations afford, continues to treat a patient suffer ing from persistent indigestion, or gastric pain, is acting unfairly to his patient and unjustly to himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Diseases of the Abdomen: With Special Reference to Diagnosis As a teacher and practical worker in the special field of abdominal surgery for eighteen years, I have found it necessary to rely largely upon Journal literature for guidance. Reliable sources of informa tion have not always been available and on this account much of my work has been done in a manner to me unsatisfactory. I therefore undertook a systematic study of those conditions within the abdo men which require surgical relief, relying upon my clinical experience to aid me in the choice and method of consideration of subjects, and the selection from general literature of the material which has proved to me of greatest value. The facts here presented are only such as have seemed to me of practical usefulness and as have borne the test of application. Book The Surgical Treatment of Ulcer of the Stomach Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Surgical Treatment of Ulcer of the Stomach Classic Reprint written by C. Mansell Moullin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surgical Treatment of Ulcer of the Stomach The reason of this discrepancy is simply that the condition of the mucous membrane of the stomach during life, especially when it is inflamed, is absolutely different from what it is after death. During life, and especially while digestion is going on, the mucous mem brane is exceedingly well supplied with blood. It is soft, bright red, thick, and full of fluid. After death it is thin, bloodless, flaccid, and in colour a pale slaty gray - it hardly looks like the same structure, the difference is so great; and in cases of acute ulceration, owing to the inflammatory changes in the surrounding tissues, the difference is greater still. Immediately around the ulcer the mucous membrane is swollen, con gested and raised above the level of the rest. Its colour is bright red, though the interior of the stomach may be paler than natural from loss of blood. Here and there I have seen the surface dotted with little blood-stained points from vessels that have given way. The sides of the ulcer are thickened and oedematous, and so soft and swollen that if the ulcerated surface is small, and does not extend deeper than the mucous membrane, they meet together over it and convert it into a narrow fissure. After death, when the blood pressure has fallen, especially in cases in which the vessels have been emptied by previous haemorrhage, all this thickening disappears, and then the ulcer assumes the crater-like form which is usually described; but I have never seen this during life. Download or read book Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Abdominal Tumors Classic Reprint written by Spencer Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Abdominal Tumors But there is one fact which stands out with ominous significance in all these records. Whatever may be our diagnostic, accuracy and our Operative skill, our success in the treatment of these diseases is fatally restricted by the influence of septicaemia. We have already reached as great an amount of success in the results of ovariotomy as can reasonably be hoped for, and shall in like manner approach such success in the results of the extirpation of other organs. But until we find some more certain protection for our patients against the ravages of septiczemia than any antiseptic precautions hitherto taken secure, abdominal surgery, though not without just claim to the credit of having done good service to humanity, must still be looked upon as a branch of our science and art which, still imperfect, calls for continued search for truth, and for constant efi'orts to improve methods of practice, from every surgical student. Book Diseases of the Stomach Classic Reprint

Download or read book Diseases of the Stomach Classic Reprint written by Franz Riegel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach The appearance in English of Professor Riegel's book will prove a satisfaction to the many who have awaited its publication, because the words are those of a master who spares neither time nor pains in per fecting his work. With characteristic absence of posing, in simple, strong, and dignified language, the author has presented his subject with such sincerity and clearness that his views will meet almost invariably with ready acceptance. It has been a pleasure to give the work the careful examination necessary, and to compare his statements with those in current literature. The text has required but few modifications and additions to make it thoroughly represent the thought of the year. This is so for the reason that, although many contributions have been pub lished since the appearance of the German edit-ion, some of these have been the thrashing out of old straw, and others have been anticipated by the far-sightedness of the author. To the subjects of periodic vomit ing in children, syphilis of the stomach, the etiology of gastric ulcer, the blood in ulcer and cancer, diet in hyperacidity, acute dilatation of the stomach, digestion leukocytosis, benign tumors of the stomach, achylia gastrica, hematemesis of hepatic cirrhosis, congenital stenosis of the pylorus, operative procedure in stomach diseases, and to a few others, some words have been added, but pains have been taken not to change the author's own statements. All new matter presented in the volume is included in brackets, so that the reader will have, as nearly as the translation will admit, the work of Riegel, with the additions of some views for which the editor is alone responsible. In conclusion, I desire to express my thanks to Professor Alfred Stengel, the editor-in-chief, for thoughtful suggestions, to the publishers for numerous courtesies, and to Dr. Allen A. Jones for assistance in proof-reading and other particulars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Stomach and Their Relation to Other Diseases In writing this book no attempt has been made to avoid the personal note; informality of style may be excused because this is largely a record of personal experience. However, conclusions are based not only on experience in my clinic, but on my acquaintance with the clinics of colleagues whose work is deservedly valued. When it has served a special purpose, I have referred to the publications of others, sometimes liberally, but usually without intent to summarize prevailing professional opinion.
