El envase o embalaje tiene como función primordial la de garantizar una llegada segura a manos de su destinatario. En segundo lugar, ha de actuar como 'vendedor silencioso' del producto. Así ocurren, especialmente, en el caso de las mercancías comercializadas en supermercados y otros establecimientos minoristas, pero incluso las mercancías industriales, como las bombas eléctricas, por ejemplo, se venden mejor si se embalan de una manera atractiva. El diseño de envases y embalajes constituye un planteamiento sistemático respecto a la consecución de estos dos objetivos: una llegada segura al destinatario, y una promoción eficaz del producto.
