Book Testing Fish Deterrents for Use Under ice in the Mackenzie Delta Area

Download or read book Testing Fish Deterrents for Use Under ice in the Mackenzie Delta Area written by Roberto G. Racca and published by [Calgary] : Environmental Studies Research Funds. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-contact deterrent technologies, both acoustic & visual, are often used in aquatic settings in lieu of physical barriers to address the threat posed to fish by industrial operations. The goal of this study was to determine the efficacy of portable, temporary deterrents as a means of excluding fish from areas of detonation activities associated with seismic exploration in Mackenzie Delta lakes. Trials were conducted in 2003 at a lake near Inuvik using whitefish, inconnu, lake trout, and northern pike. Groups of fish were equipped with orally inserted acoustic tags, placed in an experimental net pen, and monitored via a fish tracking system that produced a detailed swimming pattern, thereby revealing behavioural responses. A multi-frequency sound projector and a strobe light were tested as deterrents. Results are presented & discussed and suggestions are made regarding a satisfactory deterrent.

Book Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Effects Monitoring

Download or read book Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Effects Monitoring written by Shelley L. Armsworthy and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offshore oil and gas drilling operations take place in some of the world's most biologically productive oceanic waters. An ongoing concern related to the development of this industry is that exposure to contaminants from waste discharges may cause ill effects on organisms and their habitat. Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) programs are undertaken to verify environmental impact assessment predictions, to detect any unforeseen effects, and to help identify cause-effect relationships. EEM has been carried out worldwide for many offshore developments, and much has been learned about the fate of drilling and production contaminants and their biological effects. EEM programs have rapidly evolved in response to new knowledge on the transport, fate, and effects of potential contaminants; changes in regulatory requirements; and improved impact assessment technologies and statistical approaches for data interpretation. In May 2003, an international group of scientists, environmental managers, and industry representatives shared their expertise and new knowledge at the Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Effects Monitoring Workshop. The participants reviewed the status of current offshore oil and gas EEM programs and identified future research needs to advance our understanding of the impacts of the offshore oil and gas industry. This book represents a selected number of peer-reviewed papers from workshop participants, covering a range of topics including regional experience from past and ongoing EEM programs; environmental management issues such as risk assessment and decision-making processes; the development of predictive risk assessment models; and new approaches and technologies formonitoring potential alterations in benthic, pelagic, and tropospheric ecosystem components. This book will be of use to scientists, environmental managers, regulators, and industry representatives, as well as members of the general public wishing to improve their understanding on the application of offshore oil and gas EEM programs for the protection of our ocean environment and its resources.

Book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2000 C1

Download or read book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2000 C1 written by Sunil S. Gandhi and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2000 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinctive group of giant quartz veins characterizes the Great Bear magmatic zone east of Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories. They are topographically conspicuous, have attracted attention from mineral prospectors, and contain occurrences of uranium, copper sulphides, and other minerals. This paper presents results of the first study of fluid inclusions from giant quartz veins in this zone. Samples were studied from the Crowfoot and Ted uranium occurrences. It begins with descriptions of the regional geological setting, the quartz veins and associated stockworks, and the two occurrences studied. It then describes the fluid inclusion study methodology, petrographic observations, and temperature & salinity determinations of the fluid inclusion samples. The results are discussed with respect to the multi-stage developmental history of the quartz veins.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-contained seismic stations have been established & operated in remote areas of the Canadian north in order to assess their performance throughout the year. This paper reports on the deployment of eight such stations between September 1999 and September 2001. Three of the station sites were located in central Baffin Island and the remainder among the diamond exploration camps of the Slave Province north of Yellowknife. The paper includes a description of the equipment used, some logistics of the deployments, statistics about the recording of earthquake data, and examples of the data recorded & its preliminary analysis.

Book An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics

Download or read book An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics written by John M. Reynolds and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 1249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics, 2nd Edition, describes the rapidly developing field of near-surface geophysics. The book covers a range of applications including mineral, hydrocarbon and groundwater exploration, and emphasises the use of geophysics in civil engineering and in environmental investigations. Following on from the international popularity of the first edition, this new, revised, and much expanded edition contains additional case histories, and descriptions of geophysical techniques not previously included in such textbooks. The level of mathematics and physics is deliberately kept to a minimum but is described qualitatively within the text. Relevant mathematical expressions are separated into boxes to supplement the text. The book is profusely illustrated with many figures, photographs and line drawings, many never previously published. Key source literature is provided in an extensive reference section; a list of web addresses for key organisations is also given in an appendix as a valuable additional resource. Covers new techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Sounding, Controlled- Source EM, shear-wave seismic refraction, and airborne gravity and EM techniques Now includes radioactivity surveying and more discussions of down-hole geophysical methods; hydrographic and Sub-Bottom Profiling surveying; and UneXploded Ordnance detection Expanded to include more forensic, archaeological, glaciological, agricultural and bio-geophysical applications Includes more information on physio-chemical properties of geological, engineering and environmental materials Takes a fully global approach Companion website with additional resources available at www.wiley.com/go/reynolds/introduction2e Accessible core textbook for undergraduates as well as an ideal reference for industry professionals The second edition is ideal for students wanting a broad introduction to the subject and is also designed for practising civil and geotechnical engineers, geologists, archaeologists and environmental scientists who need an overview of modern geophysical methods relevant to their discipline. While the first edition was the first textbook to provide such a comprehensive coverage of environmental geophysics, the second edition is even more far ranging in terms of techniques, applications and case histories.
