Download or read book The End of Catholic Mexico written by David Gilbert and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The End of Catholic Mexico, historian David Gilbert provides a new interpretation of one of the defining events of Mexican history: the Reforma. During this period, Mexico was transformed from a Catholic confessional state into a modern secular nation, sparking a three-year civil war in the process. While past accounts have portrayed the Reforma as a political contest, ending with a liberal triumph over conservative elites, Gilbert argues that it was a much broader culture war centered on religion. This dynamic, he contends, explains why the resulting conflict was more violent and the outcome more extreme than other similar contests during the nineteenth century. Gilbert’s fresh account of this pivotal moment in Mexican history will be of interest to scholars of postindependence Mexico, Latin American religious history, nineteenth-century church history, and US historians of the antebellum republic.
Download or read book Catholicism as Decadence written by Marcello Fantoni and published by Mauro Pagliai Editore. This book was released on 2008 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of two workshops that took place at the Center for the Study of Italian History & Culture of Georgetown University (Fiesole) and dealt with the relationship between Catholicism and the interpretative canons of history. This theme was instrumental to the discussion of the causes leading to the emergence of the concept of decadence during the age of the counter-reformation and of the link between Catholicism and anti-modernity. In keeping with this theme the volume offers a panorama of the various national historiographies in order to highlight the specific ideological and historiographical trends that led to this association. From the discussion emerged both common trends and different declinations of one single phenomenon. Thus, it has been possible to present for the first time both a comparative perspective and a more general view. The association between Catholicism and anti-modernity, which originated during the age of the Reformation and expressed itself in literature, in historiography, and in political and philosophical thought and, more generally in the collective imagination, has become a cultural phenomenon that reached its zenith in the nineteenth century. It has had a strong impact on the epistemology of historical research, has contributed to shape many different identitary paradigms and has become a distorting lens through which to read the role of Catholicism in political debate and in social dynamics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into obscurity in a rural backwater of central Spain in the waning years of the eighteenth century, Baldomero Espartero (1793–1879) led a life resembling that of a character created by Stendhal or Gabriel García Márquez. As a seventy-five-year-old man he was offered – and turned down – the throne of an industrializing nation. During his illustrious life, he fought against Napoleon, Simón Bolívar, and other Latin American independence leaders; won a seven-year civil war; served as regent for the child queen Isabella II; and spent years in exile in England. He governed as prime minister and also received multiple noble titles, including that of prince, which was normally reserved for members of the royal family. By his sixties, Espartero represented an almost mythical figure. Based on comprehensive archival research in Spain, Argentina, and the United Kingdom, The Sword of Luchana explores the public and private lives of this archetypal nineteenth-century hero. Adrian Shubert gives voice to the mass of ordinary Spaniards who revered Espartero as the embodiment of liberty and freedom, and to Jacinta Martínez de Sicilia y Santa Cruz, his wife of more than fifty years who played a key role in his public career. Including unprecedented access to Espartero’s personal papers, and set against the background of wars and revolutions in Spain and its American empire, The Sword of Luchana is a compelling account of the history of a crucial period of war, revolution, and political and social change.

This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a new understanding of the relationship between Church and State in 20th-century Costa Rica. Understanding the relationship between religion and social justice in Costa Rica involves piecing together the complex interrelationships between Church and State — between priests, popes, politics, and the people. This book does just that. Dana Sawchuk chronicles the fortunes of the country’s two competing forms of labour organizations during the 1980s and demonstrates how different factions within the Church came to support either the union movement or Costa Rica’s home-grown Solidarity movement. Challenging the conventional understanding of Costa Rica as a wholly peaceful and prosperous nation, and traditional interpretations of Catholic Social Teaching, this book introduces readers to a Church largely unknown outside Costa Rica. Sawchuk has carefully analyzed material from a multitude of sources — interviews, newspapers, books, and articles, as well as official Church documents, editorials, and statements by Church representativesto provide a firmly rooted socio-economic history of the experiences of workers, and the Catholic Church’s responses to workers in Costa Rica.
