Book excerpt: Ángel de Saavedra, Duque de Rivas (Córdoba 1791-Madrid 1865) tuvo una vida turbulenta, apasionada, romántica y contradictoria como la época en que le tocó vivir. Fue dramaturgo, poeta, historiador, pintor y estadista. Luchó en la guerra de la Independencia contra los franceses en 1808 y tras ésta se exilió por sus ideas liberales en 1823. Vivió en Londres, Francia, Italia y Malta, y en ese momento se apasionó por los autores ingleses de más prestigio entre los románticos (Shakespeare, Byron, Scott). Gracias a una amnistía, regresó a España en 1834 y heredó el título y una gran fortuna, iniciando una evolución hacia posturas más conservadoras. En 1835 estrena Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino, primer drama español íntegramente romántico y acaso el más representativo del movimiento, pues en ningún otro se acumulan tantos elementos característicos: pasión, misterio, soledad, fuerza ciega de la fatalidad, rebelión, suicidio... Ningún otro consigue fundir tan genialmente estilo culto y llano, verso y prosa, en una acción de desbordada y enloquecida originalidad. Fue embajador en Nápoles y en París, vicepresidente del Senado y del Estamento de Próceres, ministro de la Gobernación y de Marina, presidente del Consejo de Ministros (durante solo dos días de 1854), presidente del Consejo de Estado (1863) y director de las Reales Academias Españolas de la Lengua y de la Historia.

Book excerpt: In 1803 in the colonial South American city of La Plata, Doña Martina Vilvado y Balverde presented herself to church and crown officials to denounce her husband of more than four years, Don Antonio Yta, as a “woman in disguise.” Forced to submit to a medical inspection that revealed a woman’s body, Don Antonio confessed to having been María Yta, but continued to assert his maleness and claimed to have a functional “member” that appeared, he said, when necessary. Passing to América is at once a historical biography and an in-depth examination of the sex/gender complex in an era before “gender” had been divorced from “sex.” The book presents readers with the original court docket, including Don Antonio’s extended confession, in which he tells his life story, and the equally extraordinary biographical sketch offered by Felipa Ybañez of her “son María,” both in English translation and the original Spanish. Thomas A. Abercrombie’s analysis not only grapples with how to understand the sex/gender system within the Spanish Atlantic empire at the turn of the nineteenth century but also explores what Antonio/María and contemporaries can teach us about the complexities of the relationship between sex and gender today. Passing to América brings to light a previously obscure case of gender transgression and puts Don Antonio’s life into its social and historical context in order to explore the meaning of “trans” identity in Spain and its American colonies. This accessible and intriguing study provides new insight into historical and contemporary gender construction that will interest students and scholars of gender studies and colonial Spanish literature and history. Although they are rarely treated as a cultural phenomenon, conversions can obviously be examined for the norms, values and presuppositions of the cultures in which they take place. Thus conversion can help us to shed light on a particular culture. At the same time, the term evokes a dramatic appeal that suggests a kind of suddenness, although in most cases conversion implies a more gradual process of establishing and defining a new - religious - identity. From 21-24 May 2003, the University of Groningen hosted an international conference on 'Cultures of Conversion'. The contributions have been edited in two volumes, which pay special attention to the modes of language and idiom in conversion literature, the meaning and sense of religious-ideological discourse, the variety of rhetorical tropes, and the effects of the conversion narrative with allusions to religious or political conventions and idealizations. The present volume contains theoretical contributions on the theory of conversion, with special attention to the rational choice theory, and on the history of research into conversion. It also offers stimulating case studies, ranging from the late Middle Ages to present times and taken from Germany, Great Britain and The Netherlands. The other volume, Cultures of Conversion, offers in-depth studies of conversion that are mainly taken from the history of India, Islam and Judaism, ranging from the Byzantine period to the new Muslimas of the West.
