Unknown to many as a style of leadership, the discursive leadership methodology seems to utilize the art of framing words and ideals through a common language set to build upon organizational values and standards. Further, it places more responsibility on subordinates to pave the way for the organization’s future; all the while, the leader of the organization is simply guiding their intent to meet their endstate but subordinates feel as if they were the ones to have created and made the change possible. However, as with any subject, discursive leadership methodologies need much more research to validate its potential as a sustainable leadership approach.

The only way a leader can have sustainability and influence for the permanent change in the lives of its followers is only when the leader has first solved its personal infirmities. The reason of so many sex scandals, corruptions, etc. is due to this major reason. We cannot separate our being into two different clones and function one as in the public field and another in the private life. The two has to be one and only when the two have integrated it is only then that the leader can lead by example. The leader will have to be tough at times to self, to discipline and push itself to remove the unwanted things from its life. The leader is a one who fights these little battles of self cleansing and purification and then treads into the world to influence a sustainable change. Why are the people still looking for a clean image of a political, corporate or national leader because there is a thirst in human kind to see a bench mark to live by. The people are seeking to follow those who have integrity and have answers to various issues which are encountered daily in private as well as public life, in the life of the community, nation and the world. The most of the leaders of today seem to be visionary at the face value but when scratched will in truth reflect their personal agendas that are being pursued. This is the problem which leads to unsustainable leadership. The complacency and indifferent attitude towards life and value system; will not last for very long if we are for a look out of enduring leadership. The world is looking for sustainable leaders who can influence in the positive way, not a fad, not a style, not for a season, but for a generation. Mahatma Gandhi's relevance to the world is even greater today. His relevance and ideology doesn't seem to age or wane off with time or circumstances. The reason of his influence in every generation is because of his uniqueness of belonging and living by the framework he built for himself. It is not the framework that the world makes for you that is important but rather the framework which you build for yourself and live by it. The world is aching and needs an icon on whose footsteps they can follow. A sustainable leader does not take the glory to self but rather acknowledges the contribution of everyone who directly and indirectly are a part of the team. The island mentality is an alien concept not a part of enduring leadership. If we are to design a model for sustainable leadership we need to get the answers to the above questions. This paper attempts to develop a model for sustainable leadership.
