Book Discovering Christ the Servant

Download or read book Discovering Christ the Servant written by Deacon Dominic Cerrato, Ph.D. and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because Jesus came not to be served but to serve (Mk 10:45), his Mystical Body, the Church, is essentially a servant Church. It’s precisely through this service that she carries out her mission. The ancient diaconate was instituted, and has been restored in our time, not simply to stand alongside priestly, religious, and lay ministry but to imbue and empower each with a renewed sense of service. Indeed, the Greek word diakonia, which is translated in English as “service,” can also be translated into the Latin word ministerium, translated in English as “ministry.” Thus, when we look at episcopal ministry, priestly ministry, religious ministry, or lay ministry, service is essential to all. Service is not something we do but someone we give: our very selves. It is an act of love rooted in a divine love already poured out for us. This book provides a radical but thoroughly consistent rethinking of the Christian life that takes up the tradition and builds upon it in a way that is both old and new. About the Author Deacon Dominic Cerrato, Ph.D., is editor of OSV’s The Deacon magazine, executive director of Diaconal Ministries, and director of the diaconate for the Diocese of Joliet. He also offers spiritual direction through the Pastoral Solutions Institute. Formerly, he served in full-time pastoral ministry, specializing in adult faith formation. In 2020, he was appointed by Pope Francis to the international pontifical commission on women and the diaconate. He and his wife, Judith, have been married for 39 years, and they have ten children and many grandchildren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Receive the Gospel of Christ whose herald you have become. Believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach. These are the words a newly ordained deacon hears from his bishop as the Book of the Gospels is placed in his hands. It is a solemn but joyous moment in which the deacon is called to a lifelong pursuit of the spiritual life. The foundation of the diaconate is intimate communion with Christ the Servant. This communion originates and deepens in the interior life, and it is here, through prayer and meditation, where he truly discovers God on a personal level and, at the same time, discovers himself in a more profound way. In Encountering Christ the Servant: A Spirituality of the Diaconate, Deacon Dominic Cerrato, PhD, offers deacons and deacon candidates an integrated approach to diaconal life and ministry, rooted in the cultivation of the interior life. In this study, Deacon Dominic outlines the primacy of the int

Book Servant Leadership

Download or read book Servant Leadership written by Efrain Agosto and published by Chalice Press. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Servant Leadership addresses a fundamental concern of the contemporary church by asking pertinent questions of the New Testament: Who became a leader in the Jesus movement and in Pauline Christianity? What was the social status of these leaders in the outside world as compared to the importance of such social status within the faith community? What practices characterized their leadership within the communities they served? The book explores models of leadership in the New Testament s two prime exemplars, Jesus and Paul, and in their respective communities of faith. It studies both Paul s statements and actions with regard to leadership issues with specific church communities, using Thessalonians, the Corinthians, the Galatians, and the Philippians correspondence as case studies in the practice of leadership. It concludes with a discussion of leadership challenges in the modern church and how a Pauline or Deutero-Pauline model can work for us today. The author shows how understanding one s followers, as well as the goals and purposes of the group one leads, is a fundamental function of leadership today, even in the corporate world. Similarly, although we expect Christian leadership to be confrontational and assertive at times, it must also be open to creating opportunities for others to exercise their gifts and, therefore, their leadership. Good leaders move others to respond to their own personal calls and commitments.

Book Following Jesus the Servant King

Download or read book Following Jesus the Servant King written by Jonathan Lunde and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a biblical theology of discipleship that gives the “big picture” of God’s relationship with humanity. It surveys God’s interaction with humankind from Eden, through the sequence of the biblical covenants, and on into the fulfillment that comes in Jesus. Throughout, the twin themes emerge—one of God’s demand of righteousness and another of his prior, enabling grace. Discipleship to Jesus stands in relation to its Old Testament precedents, preserving continuity in the grace/demand interplay. Jesus’ ministry to Israel is the fulfillment of the interactions between God and his people, assuming the roles of righteous King and gracious Servant. Faithful discipleship to Jesus the King, therefore, must always involve responding to his bracing call for righteousness, but doing so in the ongoing experience of the Servant’s prior, enabling grace. This book provides an understanding of Jesus that will facilitate ongoing experiences of transforming grace, which in turn will enable faithful discipleship. As such, it presents a view of Christian discipleship that is grounded in an informed Christology of Jesus, the Servant King."

How can we follow Him and grow to become more like Him? It’s impossible to become like someone whom we don’t truly understand. When pondering about our Savior, are we able to answer these vital questions: • Who is He? • What is He like? • What are His fundamental attributes? • What does He believe and what did He teach? • How did He handle the adversity, trials, rejection, and temptations that He faced in His life? • How can this knowledge help us in our own trials and temptations? We can turn to three sacred sources to discover who our Savior is: the scriptures, the teachings of the prophets, and the commandments He has given us. As we study His attributes from these sources, our understanding will expand, and our lives will improve significantly. Each chapter in this book focuses on one of our Savior’s attributes, concluding with powerful suggestions demonstrating how we can obtain these same qualities. As we apply His attributes in our lives, we will become more like Him. As we become more like Him, we will come to know Him better and we will be filled with power from heaven. Discovering Christ can lead each of us to a richer life—a life filled with light, peace, and joy.
