Book Bad Tourist

Download or read book Bad Tourist written by Suzanne Roberts and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both a memoir in travel essays and an anti-guidebook, Bad Tourist takes us across four continents to fifteen countries, showing us what not to do when traveling. A woman learning to claim her own desires and adventures, Suzanne Roberts encounters lightning and landslides, sharks and piranha-infested waters, a nightclub drugging, burning bodies, and brief affairs as she searches for the love of her life and finally herself. Throughout her travels Roberts tries hard not to be a bad tourist, but owing to her cultural blind spots, things don’t always go as planned. Fearlessly confessional, shamelessly funny, and wholly unapologetic, Roberts offers a refreshingly honest account of the joys and absurdities of confronting new landscapes and cultures, as well as new versions of herself. Raw, bawdy, and self-effacing, Bad Tourist is a journey packed with delights and surprises—both of the greater world and of the mysterious workings of the heart.

Book Eutrophication of Surface Waters Lake Tahoe

Download or read book Eutrophication of Surface Waters Lake Tahoe written by Percy Harold McGauhey and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey was made of nutrient and other chemical constituents of surface waters from developed and undeveloped land areas, sewage effluents, seepage from septic tank percolation system and refuse fills, drainage from swamps, precipitation, and Lake Tahoe water. Algal growth stimulating potential of the samples were bioassayed with Selenastrum gracile as a test organism. Algal response to nutrients was measured by maximum growth rate and maximum cell count in a 5-day growth period. Ponds simulating the shallow portions of the lake were used for continuous flow assay of the biomass of indigenous lake organisms produced by sewage effluent. Flask assays and chemical analyses were made over two years on three major creeks. Twenty-eight other creeks and precipitations were monitored by chemical analysis. Evaluating the eutrophication potential, Lake Tahoe is nitrogen sensitive and responds to it in proportion to its concentration.

Book A Short History of Lake Tahoe

Download or read book A Short History of Lake Tahoe written by Michael J. Makley and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Tahoe is one of the scenic wonders of the American West, a sapphire jewel that attracts millions of visitors each year. But the lake drew Native Americans to its summer shores for millennia, as well as more recent fortune hunters, scientists, and others. A Short History of Lake Tahoe recounts the long, fascinating history of Lake Tahoe. Author Michael J. Makley examines the geology and natural history of the lake and introduces the people who shaped its history, including the Washoe Indians and such colorful characters as Mark Twain and legendary teamster Hank Monk, and later figures like entertainer Frank Sinatra and Olympic skier Julia Mancuso. He also covers the development of the lake's surrounding valley, including the impacts of mining, logging, and tourism, and the economic, political, and social controversies regarding the use and misuse of the lake's resources. Generously illustrated with historic photographs, this book is an engaging introduction to one of the most magnificent sites in the world. It also illuminates the challenges of protecting natural beauty and a fragile environment while preserving public access and a viable economy in the surrounding communities.

Book excerpt: The idea for doing this book came from teaching inner-city students in Newark, NJ, and realizing from that experience that poetry--its writing and reading--is a great medium for not just self-expression, but for recognizing and giving vent to the turbulent frustration and anger that children and teenagers endure in the growing-up process. this book has approximately 130 original and collected poems, as well as a how-to section in most chapters, 17 famous poets and short biographies. It also has a number of poems from children and students from Newark, NJ and other places in NJ and the world. The first chapter has 26 poems of India, SriLanka, Bangladesh, North Africa, China and other exotic places. Each chapter also has a small section for the reader to write his or her own poetry. The book is designed to engage the reader in far away travel, as well as to develop an interest in poetry and learn a little about writing it in the process. It was made for adults and thoughtful teens.

In this photographic journal, we experience the transformation of Lake Tahoe from a Washoe paradise, to a timber resource for the Comstock Lode, and finally to a land of private retreats and hostelries. Herein we experience the environmental, business, and economic changes in the Tahoe Basin through time. Redefinition of the D. L. Bliss family business from timber and forest products to hostelry economically transformed Lake Tahoe. Investments in the Tahoe Tavern, Steamer SS Tahoe, modern rail service, and marketing to affluent San Francisco clientele reshaped the economy. Millions discovered the alpine air, pristine blue waters, and good times that Tahoe offers. Today, visitors still carry cameras and vow to visit again next year.
