Book excerpt: About the Book Adam St. James, software genius and savant Chief Technologist of the massive US federal DataLab Project, had just returned to his home in Barrows Bay, British Columbia from Tucson, Arizona. He had spent the better part of the past month working on a pro bono assignment for his father’s friend Peter Berg, Regional Director of the FBI, working out of the Seattle field office. His favor for the FBI was to secure the mother lode and holy grail of the FBI’s Joint Organized Crime Task Force that Berg believed he had accidentally stumbled upon. Mere fortuity had led him to what he thought was fifty years or more of Mafia financial books and records detailing organized criminality from Seattle to Miami and all points in between. What Adam found was nothing even remotely resembling what Regional Director Berg was looking for. It had been a small clerical error made by a temp transposing a letter or two in a last name that led Adam St. James to his incredible discovery. But this discovery was too incredible, too massive to even contemplate as being authentic. Adam himself did not believe it could be true. Would he be proven correct or was the truth just immeasurably stranger than fiction? If Adam had accidently stumbled upon a great discovery, it would mean that he had fortuitously confirmed the existence of the cryptid of all cryptids. Had Adam found scientific and verifiable proof of the existence of an unknown species of creatures capable of transforming into human form? Or was this some immense practical joke designed to annoy and embarrass him and his father, noted forensic archeologist and author, Edward St. James? They live among us. The journey is fantastic, the discovery, if true, immense. But will Adam and his eclectic family survive this discovery? Will humanity? Murder, intrigue, deception, treachery, lust and betrayal all come together in the Cryptid Trilogy as mankind faces off against an unknown species bent on its total destruction as the dominant species on the planet. Adam reveals his amazing natural abilities as he seeks to understand and control them. How will this saga end?

His writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered to be part of Dark romanticism. His themes often centre on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. Excerpt: "My dearest Sophie, I had a parting glimpse of you, Monday forenoon, at your window—and that image abides by me, looking pale, and not so quiet as is your wont. I have reproached myself many times since, because I did not show my face, and then we should both have smiled; and so our reminiscences would have been sunny instead of shadowy. But I believe I was so intent on seeing you, that I forgot all about the desirableness of being myself seen" Content: Letters: Browne's Folly (a letter for the Essex Institute) Love Letters (To Miss Sophia Peabody) - Volume I&II Letter to the Editor of the Literary Review Memoirs: American Notebooks (Volume I & II) English Notebooks (Volume I & II) French and Italian Notebooks (Volume I & II) Biographies and Reminiscences of Hawthorne: The Life and Genius of Hawthorne by Frank Preston Stearns Hawthorne and His Circle by Julian Hawthorne Memories of Hawthorne by Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Hawthorne and His Moses by Herman Melville 'Fifty Years of Hawthorne': Four Americans by Henry A. Book The Diamond Lens and Other Stories

Download or read book The Diamond Lens and Other Stories written by Fitz-James O'Brien and published by Hesperus Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An absorbing and haunting collection of early science fiction tales by an Irish-American author Fitz-James O'Brien capitalized on the success of his predecessors Edgar Allan Poe and Mary Shelley in writing disturbing stories with demented protagonists, and this collection of three tales shows his mastery of the macabre. "The Diamond Lens" tells of a lone scientist's discovery of a microcosmic world within a drop of water, and his growing obsession with the beautiful Animula, a fair maiden within this world which he can see but never enter. His uncompromising pursuit of knowledge at any cost foreshadows the mad scientist familiar to readers in a multitude of works. In "What Was It?" an invisible man is discovered by residents of a boarding house. The residents' capture and investigation of the creature blends the fantastic with the scientific as they seek rational explanations for this extraordinary phenomenon. "The Wondersmith" is a macabre tale of an embittered toymaker who seeks revenge upon the society that has persecuted him by creating demonic mannequins and imbuing them with life in order to slaughter the masses— a fantastic melodrama in which the cunning Wondersmith is offset by the unassuming and unlikely hero Solon the hunchback, in love with the villain's daughter.

Book The Hidden Beauty of the Microscopic World

Download or read book The Hidden Beauty of the Microscopic World written by James Weiss and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The videographer behind the Journey to the Microcosmos YouTube channel (386K subscribers) James Weiss presents a beginner's guide to the extremely small and utterly strange life that surrounds us. James Weiss was feeling lost in life when he first discovered his interest in the microscopic world. With his own microscope and a little homespun ingenuity, he began to capture thousands of hours of stunning footage of the creatures that he found around him: the local pond, at the beach, in a puddle. What he found astounded him, and it became his mission to reveal the beauty of the microcosmos to everyone. In his fun and accessible style, interspersed with otherworldly photographs, James presents this beginner's guide to the invisible life that surrounds us. From the most simple single-celled life, to complex micro-animals, James reveals the secrets of a world that we rarely consider. Navigating the births, feasts, tragedies, idiosyncracies and deaths of a cast of tiny characters, learn how these lifeforms work and what lessons they can teach us about our own existence. Mixing scientific detail with thoughtful musings that betray the fascination at the heart of his topic, James has created a way of looking at microorganisms in an empathetic and engaging style. You'll discover fascinating absurdities: that a cell can be both its own daughter and its own mother. That immortality really does exist, and it comes in the form of a teeny, tentacled medusa. And that seeing the wonder of nature from a new perspective can literally save your life.

Download or read book Naked Spheres of Ink written by G. Elton Warrick and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are instructions and guidelines for most things. How is it then, that we have so many misguided people? I have come to the conclusion most people are the same as other people. However, those other than the majority are as different as the sun and the moon, the earth and space. And yet, each of us desire to be unique; to be recognized as individuals, apart from the crowd. Nevertheless, most of us will not be remembered by future generations. A few of us work hard at putting our uniqueness to word through poetry. This book is my meager attempt at sharing part of my observations and fantasies into verse in my own poetic way. I have tried to include in this book a mix of forms and styles. Some forms are formal, most are not. I have included a few sing-song street rhymes some sophisticated, most not. You may discover a few "Rap" poems and others which are experimental. It is kind of like throwing Spheres of Ink onto a collection of pages and to be hopeful that they adhere enough and are created skillfully enough that some of them will be remembered by association of my name. After I am dead and my ashes scattered, I hope some of this poetry will survive me, perhaps this very copy you are reading now. And that somewhere down the line of time others will discover poetry they like from this small collection. The most wasted of all days is one without poetry. If you discover my spheres of ink have landed where they shouldn't, or that your poetic taste differs, I do apologize in advance for wasting your valuable time. In that case, remember that some poetry is not to be tossed aside lightly... it should be launched into outer space. This book is dedicated to honest opinion. This book does not demonstrate genius, not even close, mediocre at best...that is my honest appraisal of the poetry in this book. However, my ego can always use stroking. Therefore, if you like the verses here, please tell someone. Encourage them to purchase a copy for themselves, or to give one, or more as gifts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in Paperback! Between an ancient Roman's trip to the moon and the fantastic tales of H.G. Wells lies a journey through time and space and an awesome evolution in scientific thinking. From Gilgamesh's search for immortality to Lucian's odyssey on the moon; from Jonathan Swift's hilarious satire on scientists in Gulliver's Travels to Mary Shelley's horrifying description of a scientist who has gone too far in Frankenstein from Edgar Allan Poe's balloon trip in the year 2848 to Jules Verne's prophesies of the impact of scientific inventions on future civilization; from Edward Bellamy's utopian escape from the industrial Revolution to H.G. Wells's magnificent story of Earth threatened by an inescapable menace-here are the chief ancestors of the modern science fiction story. For the first time, these and other key works are gathered together in one anthology, complete with revealing commentary on the authors, their eras, and the role each played in establishing what we today recognize as science fiction. The Road to Science Fiction is a six-volume anthology of science fiction that covers the development of science fiction from its earliest prototypes in the Sumerian Gilgamesh and the Greek epics to approximately 1990. Created originally to provide anthologies for use in classes, these volumes have become mass-market sellers as well, since they are not only a source of outstanding stories but also explain what constitutes science fiction, how it developed and the contribution the authors and the stories have made to the evolution of science fiction. Cloth edition previously published in 1979.
