Book The Voyages of Jacques Cartier

Download or read book The Voyages of Jacques Cartier written by Ramsay Cook and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacques Cartier's voyages of 1534, 1535, and 1541constitute the first record of European impressions of the St Lawrence region of northeastern North American and its peoples. The Voyages are rich in details about almost every aspect of the region's environment and the people who inhabited it. As Ramsay Cook points out in his introduction, Cartier was more than an explorer; he was also Canada's first ethnographer. His accounts provide a wealth of information about the native people of the region and their relations with each other. Indirectly, he also reveals much about himself and about sixteenth-century European attitudes and beliefs. These memoirs recount not only the French experience with the Iroquois, but alo the Iroquois' discovery of the French. In addition to Cartier's Voyages, a slightly amended version of H.P. Biggar's 1924 text, the volume includes a series of letters relating to Cartier and the Sieur de Roberval, who was in command of cartier on the last voyage. Many of these letters appear for the first time in English. Ramsay Cook's introduction, 'Donnacona Discovers Europe,' rereads the documents in the light of recent scholarship as well as from contemporary perspectives in order to understand better the viewpoints of Cartier and the native people with whom he came into contact.

Book A Teacher s Guide to Land of Hope

Download or read book A Teacher s Guide to Land of Hope written by Wilfred M. McClay and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Teachers’ Guide to Wilfred McClay’s Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story will be an invaluable aid to classroom teachers who use Land of Hope as a textbook for courses in United States history. McClay has coauthored the Guide with John McBride, a master teacher with over thirty years of secondary and collegiate teaching experience. The result is an exceptionally rich and useful resource for the enhancement of the classroom experience. Each chapter of Land of Hope has a five-part treatment: a short summation of the chapter’s contents, a lengthy set of questions and answers about the text of the chapter, materials that can be deployed in testing or used to sharpen classroom discussion; a set of short objective tests, suitable for quizzes and exams; a primary-source document for class study and analysis; and questions and answers to accompany the document. In addition, there are special units to assist teachers in the giving special coverage to the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Origins of the Two-Party System. Like Land of Hope itself, these materials are designed to help students come away from the study of the American past with a coherent sense of the larger story, and a sense of history as a profoundly reflective activity, one that goes to the depth of our humanity.

This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This teacher’s guide aims to introduce students aged 10–13 to forests, their current state and multiple values, while allowing teachers to meet curricular objectives. The teaching modules focus on defining forests, investigating their role in the water cycle, exploring some of their products and introducing students to sustainable forest management. The teaching draws inspiration from internationally recognized pedagogical approaches such as the inquiry method. Most of the learning takes place by “doing”, in classrooms or under the trees, rather than being paper-based, although reading and writing exercises are also included. The teacher’s guide is complemented by a separate learning guide for school students. The State of the World publications cover important global themes that are core to FAO’s mission – eradicating hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; eliminating poverty and driving forward economic and social progress for all; and ensuring sustainable natural resources management.
