Book Current Trends in Cryobiology

Download or read book Current Trends in Cryobiology written by Audrey U. Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 20 years there have been amazing developments in low temperature physics, engineering, and biology. They form part of the very rapid post-war growth in pure and applied sciences of every kind. During this period several branches of biology including immunology, molecular biology and, of course, cryobiology, have split off from their parent disciplines. One result of this splintering has been the development of separate jargons used by the specialists and sometimes incomprehensible to those working in closely allied fields. The pure physicists, chemists, and the applied scientists, including physicians, surgeons, and pathologists, find the new jargons particularly baffling. We have attempted in this monograph to present to cryogenic engineers a picture of cryobiologists and their problems using as few strange technical words as possible. We hope that this book will help to bridge the gap which has already formed between them in spite of the opportunities for collaboration in many projects. We hope that it may also be useful to scientific research workers and postgraduate students of many kinds united only by curiosity about cryobiology. We are very much indebted to Dr. K. Mendelssohn, who insti gated us to produce a monograph and who reassured us that cryogenic engineers are as keen to understand the current trends in biology, and particularly in cryobiology, as we are to enlist their help. We have had much help in preparing this book.

Book Clinical Applications of Cryobiology

Download or read book Clinical Applications of Cryobiology written by Barry J. Fuller and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-08-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a state-of-the-art summary of the applications of low temperature to clinical situations, together with details of the underlying principles of biology. It provides specific information for the clinicians and research workers in a number of areas of current interest and attempts to provide a unifying theme of cryobiology of interest and value to those researching a clinical problem. Specific topics discussed include the effects of low temperatures on mammalian systems in the absence of ice and how the changes can be modulated to achieve desired results; low temperature storage of tissues and organs for transplantation in the liquid state; the effects of whole body hypothermia in man and how it relates to mammal hibernation; problems associated with ice formation and the subsequent freezing of cells and tissues; cryopreservation of blood cells, reproductive cells, and tissues, such as the skin and cornea. Other interesting issues featured include the developments in cryopreservation of large, highly-organized structures and the destructive powers of ice formation in cryosurgery of diseased tissues.

Download or read book Cryobiology written by Julian White and published by . This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biological branch which deals with the study of the effects of low temperatures on living beings in the cryosphere of the Earth is known as cryobiology. The biological material and systems are studied at moderately hypothermic conditions to cryogenic temperatures. Cryobiology primarily studies systems and materials such as organs, tissues, proteins, cells as well as whole organisms. The central areas of study in cryobiology are the study of cryosurgery, and cold-adaptation of microorganisms, animals and plants. It also studies cryopreservation of cells, gametes, tissues of animals and humans. It also deals with the preservation of organs under hypothetical conditions and physics of supercooling. This book provides significant information of this discipline to help develop a good understanding of cryobiology and related fields. While understanding the long-term perspectives of the topics, it makes an effort in highlighting their impact as a modern tool for the growth of the discipline. The book is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.

Book Current Frontiers in Cryobiology

Download or read book Current Frontiers in Cryobiology written by Igor Katkov and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-03-09 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a decade has passed since the last textbook on the science of cryobiology, Life in the Frozen State, was published. Recently, there have been some serious tectonic shifts in cryobiology which were perhaps not seen on the surface but will have a profound effect on both the future of cryobiology and the development of new cryopreservation methods. We feel that it is time to revise the previous paradigms and dogmas, discuss the conceptually new cryobiological ideas, and introduce the recently emerged practical protocols for cryopreservation. The present books, "Current Frontiers in Cryobiology" and "Current Frontiers in Cryopreservation" will serve the purpose. This is a global effort by scientists from 27 countries from all continents and we hope it will be interesting to a wide audience.

Book excerpt: Cryobiology is primarily centred on the effects on those living organisms or non-living objects, although the methods and procedures are also very important. All around the world new and improved techniques are being tested to make this a better medical and preservational procedure. Not only are the different techniques and procedures getting increased attention, but also many accompanying controversial issues are as well. Low temperature biology, or cryobiology, has the possibility to very easily and very drastically affect everyoneís lives in the future. Through rapidly approaching cryobiological medical procedures and techniques, the presence of intense ethical issues may play an important role in many everyday decisions that do not now exist.

Book Quantitative Cryofixation

Download or read book Quantitative Cryofixation written by W. B. Bald and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of cryofixation, which is the initial and most critical stage of specimen preparation in low-temperature microscopy, has often been something of a bugbear to the practising microscopist. Successful cryofixation requires that a biological sample should be cooled and frozen as rapidly as possible to prevent ice crystal formation, which would otherwise obscure the underlying cell or tissue structure. It is clear, then, that the ultimate success of the microscopical analysis hinges upon this aspect of specimen preparation, and yet no serious attempt has been made to control the cryofixation procedure more strictly nor to define the process in quantitative terms. The approach adopted in this book is therefore unique. The author begins with a review of the fundamental principles of heat transfer relevant to the freezing process, and uses this as the framework for a fully quantitative analysis of the various techniques of cryopreservation. Although accurate numerical solutions are available for most problems in heat transfer, they give little insight into the relative merits of the differing techniques. The emphasis is therefore placed upon approximate analytical solutions that enable the reader to compare the different freezing methods and to select the one best suited to a particular experiment. The application of these solutions is illustrated by numerous worked examples throughout the text. Complex mathematical formulations have been avoided where possible, so that the mathematics should be within the capabilities of readers who have attained GCE 'A' level standard in the subject. Any practising cryomicroscopist or biologist who has encountered problems with the cryofixation of biological samples will now have recourse to this direct, practical and readable guide, which should establish itself as a standard work in the field. W B Bald is currently head of the Wolfson Unit for Applied Cryobiology within the Institute for Applied Biology at the University of York. He has been active in the field of low-temperature physics since 1967, when he was involved in the design of cryogenic tankage for the Apollo and post-Apollo manned space missions, and has since published over 50 papers on varied aspects of cryogenics and cryobiology.
