Book excerpt: This thesis examined rape and sexual assault survivor narratives in visual images to better understand lived experiences of sexual assault. The thesis sought to determine ideologies of sexual assault that emerge on the tumblr blog Project Unbreakable through examining eight survivor narratives. In addition, this thesis focused on discovering rhetorical strategies employed by survivors of rape and sexual assault when explicating their experiences. A rhetorical ideological critique informed by theories of feminism and cultural studies discovered ideologies of sexual assault in chosen images by employing Rice's (2004) omnaphistic visual schema to analyze postmodern visual images. In highlighting oppositional elements, co-constructed elements, contextual elements, and ideological elements in each image, this thesis was able to discover rhetorical strategies used by survivors to shed light on experiences of sexual assault.

Using affective and feminist materialist approaches to rhetorical criticism, Stephanie Larson examines how discourses about rape and sexual assault rely on strategies of containment, denying the felt experiences of victims and ultimately stalling broader claims for justice. Investigating anti-pornography debates from the 1980s, Violence Against Women Act advocacy materials, sexual assault forensic kits, public performances, and the #MeToo movement, Larson reveals how our language privileges male perspectives and, more deeply, how it is shaped by systems of power—patriarchy, white supremacy, ableism, and heteronormativity. Interrogating how these systems work to propagate masculine commitments to “science” and “hard evidence,” Larson finds that US culture holds a general mistrust of testimony by women, stereotyping it as “emotional.” But she also gives us hope for change, arguing that testimonies grounded in the bodily, material expression of violation are necessary for giving voice to victims of sexual violence and presenting, accurately, the scale of these crimes. Larson makes a case for visceral rhetorics, theorizing them as powerful forms of communication and persuasion. Demonstrating the communicative power of bodily feeling, Larson challenges the long-held commitment to detached, distant, rationalized discourses of sexual harassment and rape. Timely and poignant, the book offers a much-needed corrective to our legal and political discourses.

In order to better elucidate the relationship between legal and experiential discourses, the author compares recent legal discourse on sexual assaultfocusing on two Supreme Court of Canada decisionswith womens own accounts of sexual violence, as presented in mainstream news media in the wake of the 2014 Jian Ghomeshi story. The findings, examined through the lens of feminist scholarship, support a view of legal and experiential discourses on sexual violence as deeply intertwined and mutually constitutive. While law shapes accounts of firsthand experience, experiential accounts also hold the potential to shape, or reform, the law. This understanding suggests a different vision of the nature and process of law reform.

Commonly, sociocultural discourses depict sex workers as morally deficient and promiscuous, having sex with multiple clients in exchange for payment. Consequently, they are often considered deserving of rape, sexual assault and other forms of abuse, or as people who should expect to receive such treatment. In a way, the Hebrew Bible contributes to such stigmatization of and discrimination against sex workers, given first, its authority and second, its negative portrayals of prostitutes as outsiders. This cutting-edge book describes the rape culture in Hong Kong, focusing on how Hong Kong Christians interpret the Bible concerning prostitutes, and in turn how this affects the treatment of sex workers. Arguably, when interpretations malign the prostitutes in the Bible, and do not critique how the Bible portrays these women, we promote the stigmatization of sex workers and, in doing so, normalise and trivialise sexual discrimination, abuse and violence, ultimately promoting rape culture.
