Book Discourses Bearing on the Controversies of the Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book Discourses Bearing on the Controversies of the Day Classic Reprint written by Walter Farquhar Hook and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses Bearing on the Controversies of the Day "The brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." Berea was a city of Macedonia, in which many Jews were resident; and they were living in respectability and peace, when that peace was disturbed by the mission of Paul and Silas, alluded to in our text. To their history I refer, because I think their conduct under these circumstances may be studied with profit to our souls, in the present position of our own Church. From that history we may learn, first, how far we arc bound to take part, or refuse to take part, in any controversies in which the Church may at any time be involved; secondly, how far it is our duty first to ascertain and then to propagate the truth; thirdly, the wise and proper course to be adopted when in such an investigation we are engaged; and, lastly, the temper of mind or disposition in which all religious inquiries ought to be pursued. Download or read book Lectures and Discourses Classic Reprint written by J. L. Spalding and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Discourses There is, I think, a unity of thought and design in the Lectures and Dis courses herewith published which the titles they severally bear might fail to make plain. The causes which render men irreligious or indifferent to religion are in general not rational or intellectual, and are never wholly so; and this is the thought which has guided me in the lecture on Religious Indifference. In the discourse which follows I have made a brief survey of the controversy between Religion and Science, in which the causes of unbelief are considered from a more exclusively intellectual point of view. The lecture on God and Christ is preliminary and introductory to the statement and enforcement of Catholic Truth, which is the subject-matter of the discourses that follow. Book Discourses Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses Again, in the lecture on Chartism, it is quite as necessary to remember the change of public feeling on the subject. It would hardly be just to say of even an average Englishman of our day, that he is indifferent to the claims of those beneath him; whatever may be the faults of the present generation of the upper and middle classes, a reluctance to communicate its own culture to the poor cannot be reckoned among them. And some tendency to this reluctance is, no doubt, implied in that particular address. But take it as a protest on behalf of a dangerous class, and its full manliness and generosity will at once become apparent. The Chartists of 1841 were, it is true, only repeating (with the far greater excuse that is afforded by ignorance and suffering) the mistake of' the high-church party of 1841. While their dogmas were so exactly opposite, their error was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Affair of State

Download or read book An Affair of State written by Richard A. Posner and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Bill Clinton’s year of crisis, which began when his affair with Monica Lewinsky hit the front pages in January 1998, engendered a host of important questions of criminal and constitutional law, public and private morality, and political and cultural conflict. In a book written while the events of the year were unfolding, Richard Posner presents a balanced and scholarly understanding of the crisis that also has the freshness and immediacy of journalism. Posner clarifies the issues and eliminates misunderstandings concerning facts and the law that were relevant to the investigation by Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr and to the impeachment proceeding itself. He explains the legal definitions of obstruction of justice and perjury, which even many lawyers are unfamiliar with. He carefully assesses the conduct of Starr and his prosecutors, including their contacts with the lawyers for Paula Jones and their hardball tactics with Monica Lewinsky and her mother. He compares and contrasts the Clinton affair with Watergate, Iran–Contra, and the impeachment of Andrew Johnson, exploring the subtle relationship between public and private morality. And he examines the place of impeachment in the American constitutional scheme, the pros and cons of impeaching President Clinton, and the major procedural issues raised by both the impeachment in the House and the trial in the Senate. This book, reflecting the breadth of Posner’s experience and expertise, will be the essential foundation for anyone who wants to understand President Clinton’s impeachment ordeal.

Book Discourse on the Origin of Inequality

Download or read book Discourse on the Origin of Inequality written by Jean-Jacques Rousseau and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rousseau first exposes in Discourse on the Origin of Inequality his conception of a human state of nature, presented as a philosophical fiction and of human perfectibility, an early idea of progress. He then explains the way, according to him, people may have established civil society, which leads him to present private property as the original source and basis of all inequality. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712 – 1778) was a Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of the 18th century, mainly active in France. His political philosophy influenced the Enlightenment across Europe, as well as aspects of the French Revolution and the overall development of modern political and educational thought.

Book When Harry Became Sally

Download or read book When Harry Became Sally written by Ryan T. Anderson and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a boy be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine “reassign” sex? Is our sex “assigned” to us in the first place? What is the most loving response to a person experiencing a conflicted sense of gender? What should our law say on matters of “gender identity”? When Harry Became Sally provides thoughtful answers to questions arising from our transgender moment. Drawing on the best insights from biology, psychology, and philosophy, Ryan Anderson offers a nuanced view of human embodiment, a balanced approach to public policy on gender identity, and a sober assessment of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. This book exposes the contrast between the media’s sunny depiction of gender fluidity and the often sad reality of living with gender dysphoria. It gives a voice to people who tried to “transition” by changing their bodies, and found themselves no better off. Especially troubling are the stories told by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later regretted subjecting themselves to those drastic procedures. As Anderson shows, the most beneficial therapies focus on helping people accept themselves and live in harmony with their bodies. This understanding is vital for parents with children in schools where counselors may steer a child toward transitioning behind their backs. Everyone has something at stake in the controversies over transgender ideology, when misguided “antidiscrimination” policies allow biological men into women’s restrooms and penalize Americans who hold to the truth about human nature. Anderson offers a strategy for pushing back with principle and prudence, compassion and grace.
