Book Social Reform Modernization and Technical Diplomacy

Download or read book Social Reform Modernization and Technical Diplomacy written by Véronique Plata-Stenger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-04-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles as part of the League of Nations’ system, the ILO is still today the main organization responsible for the international organization of work and the improvement of working conditions in the world. Widely recognized for its efforts in building international labour standards, the ILO remains little studied by development specialists and historians. This book intends to fill this gap and traces the history of international development and its early pioneers, through an analysis of the activities of the International Labour Office, the Secretariat of the International Labour Organization, between 1930 and 1946. In this book, development is used as a key to questioning the ILO's place and function in the expanding inter-war world. The development practices and discourses that emerged in the 1930s were mainly intended to support the ILO's universalization strategy, which was made necessary by the events that shook Europe at the time. Development discourses and practices were also part of the "esprit du temps", as they were closely linked to the affirmation of the planist and rationalist ideas of the 1930s. However, development for the ILO was not reduced to a project of economic modernization, but was seen as a tool for social engineering, as evidenced by the ILO's missions of technical assistance, organized since 1930. The analysis of the expertise work makes it possible to highlight the logics that prevailed in technical assistance, which was more in line with institutional objectives, than with the dissemination of a genuine expertise. This book therefore hopes to bring new insight on the history of internationalism, and international organizations during the inter-war period and the Second World War, as well as on the role of the ILO in the history of international development thinking and practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Well there it is. It won't work, but you must bloody well make it," said the chief of Britain's military leaders when he gave orders to begin planning for what became known as Operation Overlord. While many view D-Day as one of the most successful operations of World War II, most aren't aware of the intensive year of planning and political tension between the Allies that preceded the amphibious military landing on June 6, 1944. This intriguing history reveals how President Franklin D. Roosevelt, while on a fishing trip in the middle of World War II, altered his attitude toward Winston Churchill and became an advocate for Operation Overlord. Philip Padgett challenges the known narrative of this watershed moment in history in his examination of the possible diplomatic link between Normandy and the atomic bomb. He shows how the Allies came to agree on a liberation strategy that began with D-Day--and the difficult forging of British and American scientific cooperation that produced the atomic bomb. At its core this story is about how a new generation of leaders found the courage to step beyond national biases in a truly Allied endeavor to carry out one of history's most successful military operations.

Book excerpt: In this volume in the American Presidency Series, McCoy recounts and evaluates the record of the Truman Administration and identifies its distinctiveness and relations to the past, its own time, and the future. Focusing on the problems that faced the United States between 1945-1953, he explains how Truman's vigor in championing civil rights, health, labor, education, and natural resource policies brought him immense unpopularity, and how, despite this, Truman triumphed in 1948, winning bipartisan support for his foreign and military policies. The author depicts Truman as an honest, hard-working, capable and complex man, and describes his relationships with his staff, Congress, foreign representatives, the judiciary, political parties, the press, the public, and influential private citizens. ISBN 0-7006-0252-6 : $25.00.

Book Critical Discourse Studies in Context and Cognition

Download or read book Critical Discourse Studies in Context and Cognition written by Christopher Hart and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Discourse Studies (CDS) is an exciting research enterprise in which scholars are concerned with the discursive reproduction of power and inequality. However, researchers in CDS are increasingly recognising the need to investigate the cognitive dimensions of discourse and context if they want to fully account for any connection between language, legitimisation and social action. This book presents a collection of papers in CDS concerned with various ideological discourses. Analyses are firmly rooted in linguistics and cognition constitutes a major focus of attention. The chapters, which are written by prominent researchers in CDS, come from a broad range of theoretical perspectives spanning pragmatics, cognitive psychology and cognitive linguistics. The book is essential reading for anyone working at the cutting edge of CDS and especially for those wishing to explore the central place that cognition must surely hold in the relationship between discourse and society.
