Book The Literary Qur an

Download or read book The Literary Qur an written by Hoda El Shakry and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2020 Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Comparative Literary Studies, Modern Language Association The novel, the literary adage has it, reflects a world abandoned by God. Yet the possibilities of novelistic form and literary exegesis exceed the secularizing tendencies of contemporary literary criticism. Showing how the Qurʾan itself invites and enacts critical reading, Hoda El Shakry’s Qurʾanic model of narratology enriches our understanding of literary sensibilities and practices in the Maghreb across Arabophone and Francophone traditions. The Literary Qurʾan mobilizes the Qurʾan’s formal, narrative, and rhetorical qualities, alongside embodied and hermeneutical forms of Qurʾanic pedagogy, to theorize modern Maghrebi literature. Challenging the canonization of secular modes of reading that occlude religious epistemes, practices, and intertexts, it attends to literature as a site where the process of entextualization obscures ethical imperatives. Engaging with the Arab-Islamic tradition of adab—a concept demarcating the genre of belles lettres, as well as social and moral comportment—El Shakry demonstrates how the critical pursuit of knowledge is inseparable from the spiritual cultivation of the self. Foregrounding form and praxis alike, The Literary Qurʾan stages a series of pairings that invite paratactic readings across texts, languages, and literary canons. The book places twentieth-century novels by canonical Francophone writers (Abdelwahab Meddeb, Assia Djebar, Driss Chraïbi) into conversation with lesser-known Arabophone ones (Maḥmūd al-Masʿadī, al-Ṭāhir Waṭṭār, Muḥammad Barrāda). Theorizing the Qurʾan as a literary object, process, and model, this interdisciplinary study blends literary and theological methodologies, conceptual vocabularies, and reading practices.

Book Pure Love Pure Poetry Pure Prayer

Download or read book Pure Love Pure Poetry Pure Prayer written by Peter J. Gorday and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time of his death in 1933 Henri Bremond, priest and member of the elite Académie française, had established himself in France, and increasingly in England and the United States, as a distinguished historian of Christian spirituality and as a Catholic modernist who helped to shake the church out of its dogmatic slumbers by embracing "pure love," artistic-poetic expression, and mystical prayer as the privileged manifestations of spiritual truth. Drawing on substantial new scholarship in France, that has resuscitated and reinterpreted Bremond's work for our own times, and that sees Bremond as an important precursor of current trends in literary interpretation as well as spirituality, Gorday surveys the entirety of Bremond's corpus of writing, setting his work in its context of his personal struggles, as well as the wider setting of French historical and cultural development.

Book Claude Levi Strauss

Download or read book Claude Levi Strauss written by David Pace and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lévi-Strauss is one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century yet he is a very private and isolated figure, who has been reticent about himself. This book, first published in 1983,provides a fascinating insight into his character through a careful reading of the more speculative passages of his books and interviews. His personal existential and psychological orientation is explored through a structural analysis of Tristes Tropiques, his most personal book, and his writings on art, nature and civilization and through a consideration of his debt to Rousseau. Dr Pace examines in depth Lévi-Strauss’s critique of cultural evolutionism and his attack on the notion of world history. He assesses the political implications of Lévi-Strauss’s own interpretation of human progress through an examination of his debates with Sartre and other Marxists in the 1950s and 1960s and his subsequent movement to the right. The author’s concern throughout is to place the world-view of this great French anthropologist in the context of twentieth-century intellectuals’ struggle to come to grips with cultural relativism and the ‘problem’ of the primitive.

Book Catholicism and Democracy

Download or read book Catholicism and Democracy written by Emile Perreau-Saussine and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Catholic Church redefined its relationship to the state in the wake of the French Revolution Catholicism and Democracy is a history of Catholic political thinking from the French Revolution to the present day. Emile Perreau-Saussine investigates the church's response to liberal democracy, a political system for which the church was utterly unprepared. Looking at leading philosophers and political theologians—among them Joseph de Maistre, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Charles Péguy—Perreau-Saussine shows how the church redefined its relationship to the state in the long wake of the French Revolution. Disenfranchised by the fall of the monarchy, the church in France at first embraced that most conservative of ideologies, "ultramontanism" (an emphasis on the central role of the papacy). Catholics whose church had lost its national status henceforth looked to the papacy for spiritual authority. Perreau-Saussine argues that this move paradoxically combined a fundamental repudiation of the liberal political order with an implicit acknowledgment of one of its core principles, the autonomy of the church from the state. However, as Perreau-Saussine shows, in the context of twentieth-century totalitarianism, the Catholic Church retrieved elements of its Gallican heritage and came to embrace another liberal (and Gallican) principle, the autonomy of the state from the church, for the sake of its corollary, freedom of religion. Perreau-Saussine concludes that Catholics came to terms with liberal democracy, though not without abiding concerns about the potential of that system to compromise freedom of religion in the pursuit of other goals.

Book The Worlds of Andr Maurois

Download or read book The Worlds of Andr Maurois written by Jack Kolbert and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centennial of Andre Maurois's birth in 1885 has made this a most appropriate moment to produce a comprehensive work assessing his role as one of the leading literary figures in the Western world. Jack Kolbert's The Worlds of Andre Maurois draws heavily from his close personal association with Maurois as well as from painstaking analyses of each of Maurois' published works and of many of his unpublished and private papers. Maurois had the virtue of serving as a supreme communicator - a writer who could transform the most complex subject matter into readable, tidily organized, and above all lucid works of prose narrative. Unchallenged as the foremost biographer of 20th century literary figures, he also produced well-written and accurate histories of the three nations he knew best: France, England and the United States. For decades his novels and short stories enjoyed worldwide popularity. Climats may well be regarded as a novelistic classic and his science fiction continues to attract many readers. With a warm spirit of appreciation Jack Kolbert's monograph covers all of the major aspects of this fascinating literary figure: his human characteristics, his presence in French and international society, the persons who peopled his private and public worlds, his great biographies, novels, short stories, histories, essays, and articles of criticism. Kolbert's study on Maurois is probably the most comprehensive work on this subject to date.

This book was released on 1924 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this edition I have endeavoured to keep down additions as much as possible, so as not to overload the book; but I have not been sparing in adding cross-references (especially in the Index) and quotations from standard authors. These quotations seldom give the first occasion on which a proverb has been used, as in most cases it is impossible to find it. I have placed an asterisk before all recognised proverbs; these will serve as a first course for those students who do not wish to read through the whole book at once. In a few cases I have added explanations of English proverbs; during the eleven years I have been using the book I have frequently found that pupils were, for instance, as ignorant of "to bell the cat" as they were of "attacher le grelot."
