It was part of a European movement, and there is much here to interest the student of the early seventeenth-century sensibility. A comparable book on English literature is Louis Martz's The Poetry of Meditation, but the lines of Dr Cave's enquiry are new. The book has a fourfold interest: to readers concerned with French literature; to those with particular interest in the traditions of devotion; to those concerned with comparative studies in the baroque period, and to students of rhetorical analysis.

It does so both by arguing that there are firmer theoretical foundations for virtue theories, and by persuasively suggesting the superiority of virtue theories over deontological and consquentialist theories on the question of explaining morally bad behavior. Virtue theories can give a richer account by appealing to the kinds of dispositions that make certain bad choices appear attractive. This richer account also exposes a further advantage of virtue theories: they provide the best kinds of motivations for agents to become better persons.

Faith, for Tauler, included a personal relationship between the Triune God and the believer. Luther cited Tauler as one of the foremost influences upon his thinking. Later devotional writers such as John Arndt and Johann Gerhard would similarly draw heavily on the works of the medieval mystic. The reason for Tauler's popularity, particularly among heirs of the Reformation, is apparent in this work, titled Meditations on the Life and Passion of Christ.
