Book Hidden Unemployment

Download or read book Hidden Unemployment written by Terry F. Buss and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-11-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and important work addresses the controversy surrounding discouragement among the unemployed. Using an unprecedented set of national and local studies, and drawing on disparate research in nearly every social science discipline, the authors produce an original, highly detailed portrait of discouraged workers. From their analysis they offer recommendations on what can be done to promote employment and reduce long-term dependency on government assistance. Other timely issues discussed are chronic minority unemployment, worker dislocation through plant closings, the impact of low wage jobs on reducing poverty, the feminization of poverty, the plight of the working poor, and the importance of the family.

Book The Social Costs of Underemployment

Download or read book The Social Costs of Underemployment written by David Dooley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-24 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going beyond the usual focus on unemployment, this 2004 book explores the health effects of other kinds of underemployment including forms of inadequate employment as involuntary part-time and poverty wage work. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, this compares falling into unemployment versus inadequate employment relative to remaining adequately employed. Outcomes include self-esteem, alcohol abuse, depression, and low birth weight. The panel data permit study of the plausible reverse causation hypothesis of selection. Because the sample is national and followed over two decades, the study explores cross-level effects (individual change and community economic climate) and developmental transitions. Special attention is given to school leavers and welfare mothers, and, in cross-generational analysis, the effect of mothers' employment on babies' birth weights. There emerges a way of conceptualizing employment status as a continuum ranging from good jobs to bad jobs to employment with implications for policy on work and health.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains proceedings of a 1978 conference on women's changing roles, based on data collected from a national longitudinal survey (begun in 1967 and still continuing) of 5,000 women aged 30-44. The keynote address was presented by Secretary of Labor Raymond Marshall, who noted the need for research to influence government policy. Papers delivered during the conference focused on four areas: (1) information available from the national longitudinal survey; (2) work and family roles--conflict and resolution, including sex-role attitudes and employment among women, women's employment, income, and family dissolution, and the economic consequences of marital dissolution; (3) how women fare in the labor market; and (4) how sociological research can be used by policymakers in government. A summary of conference proceedings and themes by Isabel V. Sawhill is included. Appendixes contain the conference agenda and a list of conference participants and attendees. (KC).
