Book No Truth Except in the Details

Download or read book No Truth Except in the Details written by A.J. Kox and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-06-30 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a couple of essays dealing with the experimental and mathematical foundations of physics in the work of Henry Cavendish and Joseph Fourier, the volume goes on to consider the broad areas of investigation that constituted the central foci of the development of the physics discipline in the nineteenth century: electricity and magnetism, including especially the work of Michael Faraday, William Thomson, and James Clerk Maxwell; and thermodynamics and matter theory, including the theoretical work and legacy of Josiah Willard Gibbs, some experimental work relating to thermodynamics and kinetic theory of Heinrich Hertz, and the work of Felix Seyler-Hoppe on hemoglobin in the neighboring field of biophysics/biochemistry. Moving on to the beginning of the twentieth century, a set of three articles on Albert Einstein deal with his early career and various influences on his work. Finally, a set of historiographical issues important for the history of physics are discussed, and the chronological conclusion of the volume is an article on the Solvay Conference of 1933. For physicists interested in the history of their discipline, historians and philosophers of science, and graduate students in these and related disciplines.

Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir, Volume 4: Electrical Discharge is a 12-chapter text that covers the fundamental and theoretical aspects of electrical discharge, with a particular emphasis on discharge in gases. The opening chapters are concerned the negative probes as being due to the random positive-ion current of the plasma and the proper space-charge with a very simple discharge tube and some miscellaneous experiments on a simple tube in which streamer type discharges were observed, as well as the effects of small amounts of tungsten in the argon discharge. These topics are followed by discussions on the verification of the Langmuir Probe-Theory; the disturbing effects of mercury vapor blast from the cathode spot on the mercury pool; and the phenomena observed in the low pressure discharges. Other chapters explore the Faraday dark space of the glow discharge and how the electrons of a beam in a plasma are given their higher velocity components. The final chapters introduce the concept of plasma oscillation. This book will be of value to electronics engineers and technical workers.

Book The Discharge of Electricity Through Gases Lectures Delivered on the Occasion of the Sesquicentennial Celebration of Princeton University

Download or read book The Discharge of Electricity Through Gases Lectures Delivered on the Occasion of the Sesquicentennial Celebration of Princeton University written by J. J. Thomson and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1883, Joseph John Thomson's fascinating treatise explores the subject of 'vortex rings'. A vortex ring, also known as 'a toroidal vortex', is a torus-shaped vortex existing within a fluid or gas where the fluid spins along an imaginary axis line that creates a closed loop. Sir Joseph John Thomson (1856 - 1940) was an English physicist and Nobel Laureate in Physics. He is most famous for having discovered and identified the electron, and for discovering the first subatomic particle. He also proved that cathode rays were composed of electrons. In 1906, Thomson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his contributions to the study of the conduction of electricity in gases. Contents include: "Momentum Of A System Of Circular Vortex Rings," "Moment Of Momentum Of The System," "Kinetic Energy Of The System," "Expression For The Kinetic Energy Of A Number Of Circular Vortex," "Rings Moving Inside A Closed Vessel," "Theory Of The Single Vortex Ring," "Expression For The Velocity Parallel To The Axis," "Due To An Approximately," "Circular Vortex Ring," etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Book Pulsed Electrical Discharge in Vacuum

Download or read book Pulsed Electrical Discharge in Vacuum written by Gennady A. Mesyats and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an up-to-date review of studies in the physics of pulsed electrical discharges in a vacuum. It gives the reader detailed information on the processes occurring at electrodes and in vacuum gaps and on the mechanisms of discharge initiation and development. Modern techniques and equipment are described in detail. Their high temporal and spatial resolution may be used to solve a number of problems concerning the short-term and microscopic aspects of discharges. A summary is given of a great deal of experimental data on the kinetics of vacuum breakdown. The authors used these results to identify a series of steps in the vacuum breakdown phenomenon. They were the first to discover and describe the explosive electron emission phenomenon and to show its fundamental role in the spark and the arc stages of a discharge. The information in this book may encourage the reader to design new experiments. The results presented may be applied to solve specific research or engineering problems.
