Book Disability in Higher Education

Download or read book Disability in Higher Education written by Nancy J. Evans and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Create campuses inclusive and supportive of disabled students, staff, and faculty Disability in Higher Education: A Social Justice Approach examines how disability is conceptualized in higher education and ways in which students, faculty, and staff with disabilities are viewed and served on college campuses. Drawing on multiple theoretical frameworks, research, and experience creating inclusive campuses, this text offers a new framework for understanding disability using a social justice lens. Many institutions focus solely on legal access and accommodation, enabling a system of exclusion and oppression. However, using principles of universal design, social justice, and other inclusive practices, campus environments can be transformed into more inclusive and equitable settings for all constituents. The authors consider the experiences of students, faculty, and staff with disabilities and offer strategies for addressing ableism within a variety of settings, including classrooms, residence halls, admissions and orientation, student organizations, career development, and counseling. They also expand traditional student affairs understandings of disability issues by including chapters on technology, law, theory, and disability services. Using social justice principles, the discussion spans the entire college experience of individuals with disabilities, and avoids any single-issue focus such as physical accessibility or classroom accommodations. The book will help readers: Consider issues in addition to access and accommodation Use principles of universal design to benefit students and employees in academic, cocurricular, and employment settings Understand how disability interacts with multiple aspects of identity and experience. Despite their best intentions, college personnel frequently approach disability from the singular perspective of access to the exclusion of other important issues. This book provides strategies for addressing ableism in the assumptions, policies and practices, organizational structures, attitudes, and physical structures of higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 imposed new duties on employers, trade organizations, service providers, property owners, educational bodies and public transport providers. It created new individual rights for disabled persons and opened up possibilities for new forms of litigation. Disability Discrimination: Law and Practice is the definitive guide to how this important legislation operates in practice in the UK. This new edition has been updated to take account of the many important developments in this area, including: new case law on the meaning of disability, and the employment and trade organization provisions in the Act; the prospective implementation of the remaining aspects of Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 which will place further duties on service providers from October 2004; the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 and its effects on schools, colleges and universities in relation to disabled pupils and students; and the likely reforms to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and the Disability Rights Commission Act 1999 following the Government's response to the Disability Rights Task Force report, its proposals for implementing the EC Employment Directive and the Disability Rights Commission first statutory review of the legislation. The book is an invaluable reference dealing with the developing body of law regulating disability discrimination for all those advising businesses, service providers and other organizations, and those representing disabled people in court or tribunal proceedings. Book Allies for Inclusion Disability and Equity in Higher Education

Download or read book Allies for Inclusion Disability and Equity in Higher Education written by Karen A. Myers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an overview of students with disabilities in postsecondary institutions and the importance of allies in their lives. It is a call to action for faculty, staff, and administrators in all facets of higher education, and emphasizes the shared responsibility toward students with disabilities and toward creating meaningful change. This monograph begins with a look into the future of disability education. How will students create their own identities? Will there be a need for disability accommodations or will a universally designed world eliminate that current necessity? It also looks at the past, with discussions of disability legislation such as the ADA of 1990, the impact of Supreme Court decisions, descriptions of college students with disabilities, and the paradigm shift from the medical “deficit” model of disability to one that focuses on the individual’s lived experience as a social construct. Drawing on theoretical frameworks in multiple disciplines, disability identity development is explained, ally development is defined, and disability services are explored. The monograph ends with a discussion of where disability education is now and how faculty, staff, and administrators will continue to be allies of inclusion for students in the years to come. This is the 5th issue of the 39th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Book Understanding Disability Discrimination Law through Geography

Download or read book Understanding Disability Discrimination Law through Geography written by Fayyaz Vellani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the UK Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in comparison to its counterparts in the USA and Australia, this book focuses on how it is being interpreted and acted upon in the context of higher education, a key area of national attention in the UK. It also evaluates this law in the context of the larger project of civil rights legislation and demonstrates that geography can be used to explain law and legal arguments by highlighting their subjectivity and by emphasizing the importance of place, specificity and context. While providing in-depth analysis of the effectiveness and scope of this significant legislation this book demonstrates the importance of geography in the application of law. It provides insights into the broader workings of UK anti-discrimination law, which are particularly relevant given the scrutiny of the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the concerns about the effectiveness of legal tools in fighting discrimination. Finally, this book critiques liberal notions of legal subjectivity and medical definitions of disability which is topical given the current attention given to debates about identity politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Code (large print version) covers the duties of post-16 education providers set out in part 4, chapter 2 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, as amended, and it replaces the version published in 2002. It is applicable in England, Wales and Scotland. These duties changed in September 2006, as a result of S.I. 2006/1721 (ISBN 9780110747804), in order to implement the European Employment Framework Directive (2000/78/EC) in relation to vocational training in the further and higher education sectors. This Code sets out practical guidance on the duty of education providers to prevent discrimination and against disabled students and disabled people wanting access to education or other related provision. It helps disabled people to understand the law and their rights if they feel they have been discriminated against. By encouraging good practice, the Code seeks to assist education providers to work towards the elimination of discrimination against disabled people and to avoid disputes. Education providers affected include higher and further education institutions; local education authorities providing adult and community education services; duties have not changed for some providers such as schools providing further education for adults or education authorities providing recreational and training facilities. Schools provision, including that for pupils over 16, with the exception of certain specialist residential schools, is covered by a separate code of practice for schools. The Code is also available in Braille (ISBN 9780117037502), audio CD (ISBN 9780117037519) and data CD-ROM (ISBN 9780117037526) formats.

Book Disabled Students in Higher Education

Download or read book Disabled Students in Higher Education written by Sheila Riddell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-10-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As wider access to higher education becomes a top priority for governments in the UK and around the world, this ground-breaking piece of work raises the challenging questions that policy-makers, vice-chancellors and government officials are reluctant to ask. A highly qualified team of authors have closely analyzed rates of participation and the experiences of disabled students in higher education over a two year period. They compare the responses of eight different universities to the new anti-discriminatory practice, contrasting their social profiles, academic missions, support systems for disabled students and approaches for the implementation of change. Change comes under particular scrutiny, with a close examination of each university’s interpretation of ‘reasonable adjustments’, and the extent to which they have modified their campuses and teaching accordingly. Student case studies are used throughout to illustrate the real impact of institutional responses to the legislation. Disabled Students in Higher Education will make fascinating reading for students of education, social policy, politics, and disability studies, and for those working towards accredited university teacher status.
